DH routinely reuses stamps. His excitement when an envelope arrives and the stamp isn't marked is a wonder to behold.

Franking is the enemy.

What cheeky things do you do to save the pennies?

The thrill of finding a 50p in the door of a locker at the swimming baths

you need £1 for ours, and I found £1 about 3 weeks ago Grin
**@Bitofachinwag* Thank you for calling it "the swimming baths"* confused as to what else you would say instead?
Swimming pool

Re the thermos: I suppose it is much lighter to carry as granules rather than coffee.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/03/2022 21:28

When your cut tulips do that dramatic thing where they keel over as though in extreme distress, pop some coppers in the vase and within 24 hrs your tulips will be fully upright again and will last another week.

Or just put coppers in the vase on the first day.

The vending machines at school where the rotating type with little doors that you opened - if you opened a certain door it would let you take out the cereal bar you bought and also the one right next to it, if you got your fingers in far enough lol

ShaneTwane · 05/03/2022 21:29

She doesn't do it anymore but growing up my mom used to use last year's Christmas cards she received as Christmas decorations for the house.

For fabric conditioner I use white vinegar: it's good as a rinse aid in a hard water area and nobody is allergic to it.

Unless I have enough to fill an oven, I cook casseroles/curries/stew in a modern wonder bag/haybox* cooker to save fuel.

*I put the casserole dish/pan in a foil bag, and that goes into a polystyrene box with extra insulation. The meal cooks using retained heat. The foil bag and poly box are reused from deliveries of fresh/frozen food I've had. I've used wireless thermometers and probes to check on the temperature of the food contents so I'm confident in the food safety.

Won't be able to do this for much longer as they are introducing bar codes on stamps.

So what’s he going to do when the bar codes start?

Am amazed you think stealing is ok

Proudboomer · 05/03/2022 21:32

I have fussy cats who I am sure can read the label on their cat biscuits but cat food has got so expensive I now buy I bag of their favourite Whiskas chicken and I of Aldi’s own cheapo biscuits and mix them together in an old whiskas bag.

Namechangeforthis88 · 05/03/2022 21:32

@MyDcAreMarvel swimming pool would be the typical term these days.

ChickenStripper · 05/03/2022 21:32

@Fivemoreminutes1

When I’m going out shopping or with the fam on a day trip, I take an empty thermos mug with a pre-measured amount of instant coffee. When I need that caffeine hit, I just ask a nearby cafe to fill it with hot water, which they normally do obligingly. I also take a tea bag and do the same later on in the day.
Now that is really cheap.

I use the water from the dehumidifier to water my hanging baskets

@CharacterForming

Ridiculously frugal but not cheeky: I have a large biscuit tin in my kitchen into which I put any unused serviettes from takeaways and I use them instead of kitchen roll

Actually cheeky: ASD DC refuses to eat chips at school on Friday because they're unsalted which means they actually go hungry, so I snaffle a couple of sachets of salt each time I'm in a takeaway and secrete them in blazer pocket.

Serviettes can't be recycled so it's good that you use them and not just bin them. Some places give you so many!
Wishensook · 05/03/2022 21:33

There's cheeky and there's just being frugal which most of these are.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 05/03/2022 21:34

Whoever said “200ml is just as filling as 300ml”…you know it’s not, right? It’s literally 2/3 as filling.

You are just eating 1/3 less, which is fine if it works for you but it’s not like it’ll necessarily work for others as a money saving tip Confused

Just popping on to remind folks that meanness is a very unattractive quality

Sparklingbrook · 05/03/2022 21:35

When OP said 'cheeky' I took it to mean not just being frugal but doing something you shouldn't. But not full on theft, that's not cheeky.

Walkingalot · 05/03/2022 21:35

Seaside slot machines - I can't help it. I go around looking for late dropped coins. Even if I find just 2p, I'm like hey, I won the lottery! Stupid really.

AldiCandlesArePerfectlyLovely · 05/03/2022 21:35

I really like ironing water but once I use a bit of it I’ll top it up with tap water - it lasts months - it just gets watered down a bit more with every use, but still smells lovely and is better than pure tap water.

I only buy it on offer for £1 a bottle too Grin

Mean with money?

Cakecakecheese · 05/03/2022 21:36

I was in Asda and scanned my bananas at the self service till. The till took a photo of the bananas and an assistant had to come over and verify I'd actually bought bananas.
'Is that in case I'd scanned it as bananas but really it was a PlayStation or something?'
'Yep, you'd be surprised at how many people try that sort of thing'.

Thank goodness that no one here cares whether or not you find them attractive
