Used to be a stand up comic and actor, and was the voice of Paddington bear when Ukraine dubbed the film!

What good things have made your jaw drop recently?

He's kind of like an Andy Burnham/Ed Balls type, isn't he? There's just something relatable about him, and then when you add in the fact that he's being a figurehead for Ukraine in the most difficult situation imaginable, and has refused to leave... He has charisma.

Lollipity · 05/03/2022 01:45

He is phenomenal. Defending his country through the night then giving inspirational speeches throughout the day. Makes our leaders and the awful Afghan leader look absolutely pathetic.

bluetongue · 05/03/2022 01:53

I remember when I visited Poland years ago and found out there were identical twins running the country. One was the president and one was the prime minister. So random.

Coyoacan · 05/03/2022 02:12

Interesting to see the vacuity of politics on this thread. Just mentioning that the heartthrob Ukranian president is supposedly corrupt results in accusations of being a Russian bot and supporting the invasion of Ukraine.

mjf981 · 05/03/2022 02:16

@Mischance

Bob Mortimer for UK prime minister! He's got a law degree and seems a decent gut.
I love Bob, but not sure he's prime minister material. He seems a bit thick on 8 out of 10 cats! (though I guess our current crop are the pinnacle of intelligence..)
mjf981 · 05/03/2022 02:16

are NOT the pinnacle

Ieatmarmite · 05/03/2022 02:25

"And also undermines Russian claims of Ukrainians being nazis and carrying out genocide against ethnic Russians.."

First off, before I'm attacked as a Putin lover, I think he's a vile man and a war criminal. I do
suggest though that you do a bit more research before making declarations about Zelensky. The "special forces" in Ukrainian army, the Azov Brigade are ultra nationalist neo Nazis who wear swastikas and have proclaimed their aim is to cleanse Ukraine of ethnic Russians and other groups they see as undesirable - Roma, LGBGT community, Muslims (The Azov Brigade have videos showing them coating bullets in pig fat to shoot muslims), migrants. The leaders of opposition parties in Ukraine have been jailed under Zelensky. Under his Presidency journalists who are critical of his Government are sacked from their posts and censored. Nazis aren't just defined as people who hate Jews. Nazis are ultra nationalist, white supremacists and Ukraine is one of the centres of neo Nazism in Europe.

The ethnic Russians, who are in the majority in Crimea felt so threatened by the right wing ultra nationalists in Ukraine who were killing ethnic Russians in other parts of the country including setting fire to a town hall & burning people to death, that over 80% of them voted to become part of Russia where they thought they would be protected. The majority ethnic Russian population in Donetsk and Luhansk also feel the same threat. The Azov Brigade have been particularly active in Donetsk. Ukraine is the only country with a neo-Nazi battalion in its army. It has been condemned by the UN Commissioner for Human Rights. If Zelensky isn't a Nazi himself then he certainly hasn't done anything to condemn those that are and is happy to let them serve in his army.

Zelensky doesn't seem to be that bright. He's been played as a fool by the US, who are the main drivers of NATO. Now he pleads for a no fly zone which NATO aren't going to give because they know how this could lead to nuclear war. The US is prepared to sacrifice Ukraine to increase their geopolitical power - they now have international consent for crippling economic warfare on Russia and have increased support for NATO. Russia may get Kyiv but it will bog them down for years. In the meantime the US increases its hegemony. This war need never have started if Donetsk and Luhansk had been allowed to become semi-autonomous regions, as was promised to them in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, which Ukraine then backed out of. It need never have started if Zelensky had been more circumspect and forward thinking when the possibility of joining NATO was being whispered in his ear by the US, who have now pulled back leaving the citizens of Ukraine to suffer. It might never have started if the US hadn't rejected the putative deal agreed by Macron and Putin last month. This war is all to the advantage of the US and to the detriment of the people of Ukraine and, ultimately the people of Russia. That good looking, charming man, who can't possibly hold right-wing fascist views, wants photos of children on desks (does that include Muslim children, migrants' children, ethnic Russian children?), and has a beautiful and intelligent wife holds a lot of the blame along with Putin and Biden.

StopStartStop · 05/03/2022 04:16

His grandfather's three brothers were killed by Nazis.

The whole - current- mess breaks my heart.

DownNative · 05/03/2022 04:30

"All the people who die from this day forward will also die because of you, because of your weakness, because of your lack of unity.

The alliance has given the green light to the bombing of Ukrainian cities and villages by refusing to create a no-fly zone.

We believe that NATO countries have created a narrative that closing the skies over Ukraine would provoke Russia's direct aggression against NATO. This is the self-hypnosis of those who are weak, insecure inside, despite the fact they possess weapons many times stronger than what we have.

We are warriors of light. The history Europe will remember this forever!"

  • Ukrainian President Zelensky on NATO's refusal to act

Zelensky is NOT wrong there! He and the Ukrainian people are brave, strong and resilient, individually and collectively.

RantyAunty · 05/03/2022 05:04

He's quite interesting and easy on the eye too.
Law degree, multilingual, comedian, actor, dancer, tv producer

Ahoyaship · 05/03/2022 06:50

@Niahm Don't watch if you are afraid of heights.

RuRue · 05/03/2022 06:56

He's named in the Pandora Papers. When he had to get rid of his offshore holdings in order to run for President he offloaded them.... to family and friends. Before Russian invaded he was not doing well in Ukrainian opinion polls (from 70% when elected to 25% support) as he'd failed to tackle oligarchs and corruption as promised and they were unhappy with how he handled Covid.

That said, it doesn't really matter at this stage in terms of where our support sits. I just think all the "OMG HES SUCH A GOOD GUY AND SO HOT" stuff is really nauseating. As with politics anywhere else, it's not black and white.

thepiratequeen · 05/03/2022 07:38

He might not have been a good politician but he is a good leader.
He has captured the attention of the world with his courage.
I think most people would have expected him to get out while he could.
The fact that he put his country first makes him admirable.
Yes, he knows how to use social media.
Yes he is an actor who can put on a performance.
But his decision to lead by example and remain, at huge risk to his life is not an act.
His speech to the EU during the week will go down in history imo.
So, I think it is okay to admire him. He has earned it.

Hibye23289 · 05/03/2022 07:44

I know this isn't appropriate but there is something so sexy about him sticking up for his country to this big bully, stood there in his basic tshirt running a country

Polyanthus2 · 05/03/2022 07:47

I feel really sad whenever I see him as he is going to most likely end up dead or imprisoned and tortured.
I suspect a 'stray' Russian bomb will kill him and anyone else in the vicinity which Russians will blame on something else. But whatever his future is very grim.
Brave man.

SueSaid · 05/03/2022 07:52

Hot. Fit. Attractive.

Seriously?

But is he very bright? that is surely far more important. His disappointment at NATO, despite the massive support he is getting, for refusing to implement a no fly zone over Ukraine would suggest not.

'From today everyone who dies will die because of you' He told NATO. No Zelenskyy, it is because of Putin.

Sally090807 · 05/03/2022 07:52

I’m sure if it was men fawning over a female president or prime minister, commenting on how hot she looks in her tight T-shirt, how nice her skin must smell etc there would be outrage on these pages. Certainly double standards here.

Lovemusic33 · 05/03/2022 08:07

I’m kind of jealous, we are stuck with Boris whilst they get multi talented young eye candy 😬

Benjispruce5 · 05/03/2022 08:08

Comedians are usually intelligent people
