Is there something in the air?

My 8 year old daughter came in from school and literally had a breakdown because I couldn't put up her LED lights in her room tonight. I have never her seen her like that before. We have spoken since and as far as she says there is nothing bothering her at school, or anything but boy oh boy. She had the tantrum of all tantrums, she was slamming doors, crying, screaming she wished she was never born, hates her life, hates me, hates her auntie, hates her cousin, I'm the worst mum ever. Crying and hyperventilating. Swinging between screaming hysterically, breaking down crying apologising and then storming away screaming insults again. I tried to help her regulate her emotions but there was no calming her down. She wasn't allowed tv tonight due to her behaviour and thankfully went for an early night without much of a fight. I am in shock with how terribly out of character she behaves tonight.

Upon speaking to my sister, her daughter was the same, complete nightmare all night. I then spoke to my friend and both of her sons have been really challenging since finishing school also.

Anyone else's acting up?

Yes, my ds10 has been so emotional. Crying for no reason and needing lots of comfort and hugs. Ive been feeling the same recently but hide it from him

liveforsummer · 02/03/2022 22:10

Re the news etc? I don't think it's that. There's been bad news on and off for her entire childhood. She's also quite black and white and if things aren't affecting her directly it's never been a problem before. My mum is very involved with Syrian and afghan refugees so I really don't the current crisis has made a huge difference to her

Chocolattay · 02/03/2022 22:11

Come to think of it, I’ve actually been in a foul mood today as has DH but I assumed it was anxiety over the war.

But I deffo think there’s something in the whole Full Moon thing. When I worked in a restaurant at uni we would always dread the full moon. Them shifts were absolutely chaotic.

liveforsummer · 02/03/2022 22:13

@Twilight7777

It’s the moon. My mum was manager of a psychiatric hospital, she said you could time it by the moon on the days when patients seemed to act up etc. I also have a teacher friend who says the same about her pupils
Also this, the amount of times we've had crazy days and I've hiked is it a full moon only for it to absolutely be one, it can't be a complete coincidence. Wind sends them crazy too
liveforsummer · 02/03/2022 22:14

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers I hadn't seen your post when I mentioned the wind 😆

My daughter is only 13 months and she was really upset earlier, crying and screaming non stop. I put it down to teething but I've never seen her so upset before, not since the one time she had colic as a newborn. Maybe there is something in the air! I hope she's not picking up on my anxiety around things at the moment.

Thedogscollar · 02/03/2022 22:15

I work in maternity we dread full moons as always horrendously busy.

Moonflower12 · 02/03/2022 22:16

I'm an EY teacher and mine have been absolutely crazy fir the last couple of days.
Today was awful - a bit windy but wet play- the worst!

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/03/2022 22:18

I work with older teens and they’ve been really hyper - screaming and shouting in silly voices, lads play fighting and wrestling, jumping on benches to film Tik Toks dancing and singing, we had a couple of incidents of them getting half way through a maths assessment in exam conditions and walking out because they just couldn’t concentrate today also. Almost like toddlers on sugar. I’m wondering if they have so much pent up energy after the pandemic and the recent horrendous weather , coupled with a sort of frantic energy going on subconsciously with the news etc. Weirdly I remember it being a little similar the couple of days before covid hit in March 2020

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/03/2022 22:19

Also many students off with sick bugs. I’m praying the start of a norovirus situation isn’t happening in our area too!

Chocolattay · 02/03/2022 22:20

@Blueeyedgirl21

Are you in South Manchester by any chance? I feel I’m coming down with something rotten

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/03/2022 22:21

@Chocolattay yes!! Not cheadle but not far. If that narrows it down !

Chocolattay · 02/03/2022 22:23

@Blueeyedgirl21

Goodness I wasn’t expecting you to say yes! I’m in the town ending with -ham

SonicBroom · 02/03/2022 22:23

Covid. First sign both times with ours was the change in mood.

Downsize2021 · 02/03/2022 22:24

Infant teacher feeling vastly better now! They've been like tiny wild animals this week! No listening, no tidying, constantly talking. Jeezo, roll on friday!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 02/03/2022 22:27

My kids are all as sensitive as bricks so no, can't say they're acting out Grin

But I think it's likely it's all the shit going on.

HereLiveIAmNotACat · 02/03/2022 22:27

Yes! 8 year old DD has been super emotional tonight with tears to the point of hyperventilating for no reason at all! Very out of character and she’s still awake!

Chocolattay · 02/03/2022 22:29

@Blueeyedgirl21.

I hope we’ve not just discovered a new emerging pandemic Grin

liveforsummer · 02/03/2022 22:32

I've also had a horrendous headache, worse yesterday but still lingering today. Painkillers weren't touching it. I said in the staff room yesterday that it's often thundery weather that seems to go hand in hand with this particular type of headache but tbh I'd forgotten it can be full moon time too. Maybe this particular new moon is shaking things up as it's a new one but bit of a coincidence

Goodbyecustardtart · 02/03/2022 22:32

I’m in my sixties. Brought up to suppress emotions. I’ve spent the day bursting into tears. Mainly triggered by the terrible situation in Ukraine, but still hugely out of character for me.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/03/2022 22:33

@Chocolattay 0161-itis, hitting spring 2022 🤣

TotalRhubarb · 02/03/2022 22:34

My normally quite happy and cheerful 6 year old DD was pretty objectionable all evening. I put it down to tiredness, but she's still awake and singing to herself in bed....

saraclara · 02/03/2022 22:34

Is it fuck the moon.

It's as though some people on this thread are living under a rock. Kids are dealing with some REALLY scary stuff right now, that they simply can't process and are too scared to even ask about.

I can't believe all the laughing emojis. For goodness sake, talk to and listen to your kids, and try to imagine and empathise with what they're going through right now.

Emmelina · 02/03/2022 22:34

The weekend was an absolute shitshow in my house 😩

Chocolattay · 02/03/2022 22:35

Yes, kids are probably hearing all sorts from Little Timmy in the playground about how he reckons Russia nuke us this weekend.
