Online food orders- bagless delivery

ViaRia · 02/03/2022 19:28

Hi
My supermarket has switched to bagless deliveries. I understand the benefits of cutting down on plastic waste but I’m not sure that simply unloading all these individual items on my hallway floor is in any way practical, safe, hygienic, or reasonable.

AIBU?

If you receive a bagless food delivery what do you actually do when it arrives? How do you get every from front door to kitchen?

To confirm, I AM NOT disputing the need to reduce plastic waste. I just don’t know what to do with 100 separate items on my floor.

I carry each crate through to the kitchen and pile it all on the kitchen table, then carry back the empty crate and pick up a new one. I didn't know you were expected to put it on your hallway floor!!

Bramshott · 02/03/2022 19:32

I have a pile of bag for life style bags, and just pack it from their crates into those on the doorstep.

beepbeep · 02/03/2022 19:32

We take the plastic crate through to the kitchen, unload onto kitchen table & then return it, collect next one (x numerous times!). Takes a bit longer but they always seem ok to wait

DreadPirateRobert · 02/03/2022 19:32

I use my shallower laundry basket. Before that I just opened up a large supermarket shopping bag or two and put the stuff straight in.

Now I have a large shoe bench thing that takes a full shop and my DH and kids walk back and forth into the kitchen with everything.

TrashPanda · 02/03/2022 19:33

I carry the crates into the kitchen and empty onto the worktops.

Ducksurprise · 02/03/2022 19:33

Who have you been using that still had bags?

I'd pay a premium for bags, they could be recyclable or swappable but I hate no bags

WabbitsAndWeasels · 02/03/2022 19:34

Bagless has been pretty normal since pre-pandemic with bags making a brief return in the lockdowns and now back to normal.

Most people have their re-usable/bags for life ready at the front door before a delivery is expected. I've also heard of people using plastic collapsible boxes etc. Just think of it like you would if you were actually packing after in store purchase. I actually find this much more convenient than having loads of plastic bags I now need to find a home for.

Fredthefrog · 02/03/2022 19:34

Used to use the bags for life and now carry the crates through to unload in the kitchen. If there are 2 of us we can unload in to the fridge

gobbynorthernbird · 02/03/2022 19:34

Seriously? You were planning on putting all your food on the floor?

BobbinHood · 02/03/2022 19:34

I carry the crate into the kitchen and dump it all on the table or worktop, repeat for as many crates as there are then put it all away properly when the driver has left. I much prefer this way to having loads of plastic bags.

JumpingFrogs · 02/03/2022 19:35

Ocado still use bags. They charge 10p per bag but will pay that back when you return them for recycling

cherryonthecakes · 02/03/2022 19:35

Do you have a blue IKEA bag ? They are good for this

itseasy · 02/03/2022 19:35

Big blue IKEA bags (or similar) for large but not too heavy stuff - like cereals, kitchen towel etc. Another smaller one for fridge stuff. Another for freezer. Use bags that stand up on their own. Mine come in crates separated like this.

LittleOwl153 · 02/03/2022 19:36

Yep carry the crate through if I'm efficient I can get half of it put away as I unpack too!

itseasy · 02/03/2022 19:36

cherry cross posted! Top tip Grin

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 02/03/2022 19:39

I bring my crates to the front door, transfer the shopping from the delivery crates to my crates, and then unpack my crates at leisure once the delivery driver has left.

Coldbit · 02/03/2022 19:39

I have carrier bags/boxes ready by the front door and just pack everything into those. It's never occurred to me to take a crate through to the kitchen, I do always feel under pressure to get everything unloaded as quickly as possible though

HalloHello · 02/03/2022 19:40

It's your own floor, hardly unhygienic. I bet it's been on floors in warehouse etc.

I usually unload it all into bags for life and then put it away at my leisure. Not rocket science.

Fridaysgirl17 · 02/03/2022 19:40

I use a large bag for life but with stuff like nappies, milk etc I just pop it on the floor inside the door as I unpack,I find it so much easier just to have the one large bag carry it in to the kitchen & pop everything away

MrsDeadpool · 02/03/2022 19:41

My folks, who both have arthritic hands and backs, take delivery at the garage door, where they have a table set up just inside, take the crate and pop it on the table, and unpack it into their own collapsible crate, then swap for the next. MIL unpacks into her own hessian bags for life. I’m lucky that my Morrison’s deliveries still come from the warehouse and in bags, like Ocado.

belimoo · 02/03/2022 19:42

@Ducksurprise

Who have you been using that still had bags?

We use Ocado for this reason
2bazookas · 02/03/2022 19:44

I have an elderly collection of large polypropoline supermarket bags that fold flat.
The delivery man stacks trays of shopping at my front door and I decant everything into the bags then carry them to the kitchen.

It's really not hard.

Wicker73 · 02/03/2022 19:44

Bagless deliveries are shite. I’m with you OP. But some pp seem to have a good system.

WeAllHaveWings · 02/03/2022 19:44

I either take crates to the kitchen or load from crate to washing basket in the hall.

Takes less than a couple of mins and is no big deal.

What are the hygiene or safety issues?

minionsrule · 02/03/2022 19:44

Our driver brings the crates into the kitchen and I unpack there.
If its peeing down and I don't want wet feet traipsing through I have some huge Sports Direct lifetime bags that I have ready by the door
