Online food orders- bagless delivery

ViaRia · 02/03/2022 19:28

Hi
My supermarket has switched to bagless deliveries. I understand the benefits of cutting down on plastic waste but I’m not sure that simply unloading all these individual items on my hallway floor is in any way practical, safe, hygienic, or reasonable.

AIBU?

If you receive a bagless food delivery what do you actually do when it arrives? How do you get every from front door to kitchen?

To confirm, I AM NOT disputing the need to reduce plastic waste. I just don’t know what to do with 100 separate items on my floor.

@EatYourVegetables

Your floor at home is certainly cleaner than a supermarket trolley.
Yours might be… not so sure about mine 🤣

@Bramshott

I have a pile of bag for life style bags, and just pack it from their crates into those on the doorstep.
This, and also ikea bags. I employ a small team of children to shuttle it from front door to kitchen, decant onto the kitchen table and to come back with the bags.
reluctantbrit · 02/03/2022 21:01

We are all down with Covid so do online shopping which is not our usual method. Last time we still got bags.

I got the email and it asked me to have bags ready at the door. So I just got two collapsable crates I normally have for washing and several normal shopping bags on standby.

Swapped in a matter of minutes and carried said crates/bag into the kitchen to sort out in peace.

I honestley don't know the issue with this.

I am similar to you OP and Pps I feel under pressure to unpack quickly...one guy used to say I'm unpacking quicker than he packed haha but I haven't had deliveries for a long time now not due to no bags but feel the slots could be used for others who need them more. I have either big blue IKEA bag or various bag for life near the door or a random Amazon box and it always end up with some sort of milk or flour or egg near the show rack on on it or near the hallway! Never thought to take the whole crate in!

Maxxxie · 02/03/2022 21:02

I hate this!!

I have a tiny hallway. 3 dogs. And an anxiety disorder.

I have to put £100 worth of shopping in my hall/living room then carry it into my kitchen because I have to lock my dogs away and that's the only place they can't get out of.

I really wish they would do bags again. I get so stressed and embarrassed about it.

beautifullymad · 02/03/2022 21:03

I use banana boxes and put them out for deliveries to go straight into.

Then I lift them in like a crate.

Bonabee · 02/03/2022 21:05

Am I a wimp?
I cannot lift a full crate so just use bags.

ifoundthebread · 02/03/2022 21:09

Eeee this thread has made me realise how much I don't think about these things 😳 I'm actually a picker for a supermarket and we stopped using bags about 6ish month ago? And I always thought it was a time thing, as it is actually really time consuming putting shopping into bags (per customer it doesn't, but when each trolly has 10 customers orders and then you do numerous trollies a shift, it takes up a fair bit time). I never even thought it was stores trying to reduce plastic 🤦🏼‍♀️

Pleiades2020 · 02/03/2022 21:17

I find those cardboard crates you pick up for free in e.g. Lidl are really useful for this. Convenient size, not too heavy and easy to load. I keep them under the stairs then move to front door on food delivery day. Like others on here, no drama Smile

BabyTurtIe · 02/03/2022 21:20

I’m with Tesco’s and they haven’t used bags for years?! So surprised you mention it being Tesco’s. They haven’t used bags where I am for at least 2/3 years now. (They briefly used them again during the pandemic but have been back to bagless for ages now)

BabyTurtIe · 02/03/2022 21:22

I take the crates and tip them all onto my sofa/rug by the front door, my kitchen is too tiny no kitchen table and not much counter space really, they obviously get a lot of people who unpack really slowly as I had a delivery today and the man said he loves it when people just tip it all out!

KevinTheKoala · 02/03/2022 21:30

I just chuck everything into the hall - it's all packaged, my floors are cleaner than a supermarket floor where the items are likely to have been dropped or even placed before being shelved anyway (and far cleaner than a supermarket trolley too), things like fruit and veg are washed before eating anyway, and the delivery drivers on a tight schedule. My deliveries are done and dusted in 2 minutes tops and I sort it all out once the door is shut.

You tip it out 😱 You anarchist!
Brevill · 02/03/2022 21:31

It really is no big deal! Have a stash of the heavy duty supermarket bags under the stairs and put the food in those at the door. The drivers will switch the top trays over so it's easier to do it. I also have 2 collapsible trolleys for the heavy stuff so we can wheel those into the kitchen rather than lug them. It takes minutes once you get used to it. And don't rush yourselves.

TheRealityCheque · 02/03/2022 21:34

I stopped getting deliveries once bagless became a thing.

It's a faf I can't be arsed with.

What's wrong with paper bags?

Ireallymustgetup · 02/03/2022 21:43

Had my first supermarket delivery in years this evening (Covid isolating). Was a bit daunted by thought of unpacking at the door, but delivery man popped both crates just over the threshold, I had my usual reusable bags ready (will unfold a few before delivery arrives next time) and a mask on the door handle so I could put it on as I opened it. Had a nice chat with the man as I unpacked, I assumed he must be used to waiting and didn’t get flustered as I would have done a few years ago. Put bags behind me as I filled them. Bit cold with the door open but took less than five mins.

They dissolve and go soggy in the rain - plus they won't be good stored in frozen or cold delivery vans.
FinallyHere · 02/03/2022 21:46

I didn't like the idea of bagels deliveries but our sticks of single use carrier bags was building alarmingly.

Since Waitrose started bagels deliveries, I ask the drivers to take the crates into the kitchen, rest them on the worktop and empty everything onto the work surface.

It works really well.

If I don't stay with them, they leave the crates in the floor so that emptying the crate involves lots of bending. They don't seem to mind at all and hesitate to put the crate on the worktop.

GeneLovesJezebel · 02/03/2022 21:46

I have bags for life by the front door and Chuck it in them.

MadgeRussell · 02/03/2022 21:50

We have bags for life by the front door. It's a pain though. Ideally I'd get the crates taken into the kitchen but our kitchen is upstairs and the only time I had the shopping taken up there, the guy trod dog poo into the stair carpet. Never again!

I have about 7/8 crates when I do an online shop! Suppose it won’t feel too bad if you only have 2.
ChuckMater · 02/03/2022 21:53

I'm sure this question was asked the other week.

My delivery driver brings it to the back door which is nearer to the kitchen. I've also loaded my wash basket up previously and carried through or loaded into my own reusable bags from the door to the kitchen

nocoolnamesleft · 02/03/2022 21:54

Reaching the floor (or the bottom of a crate) is painful on a good day and impossible on a bad day. Carrying a crate is out of the question. This system discriminates against the disabled.

The drivers will bring it indoors and pop it on a higher surface if you ask them to.
Bootikin · 02/03/2022 21:59

Here is a tip for you= don’t put food on the floor. HTH.
