Online food orders- bagless delivery

125 replies

ViaRia · 02/03/2022 19:28

Hi
My supermarket has switched to bagless deliveries. I understand the benefits of cutting down on plastic waste but I’m not sure that simply unloading all these individual items on my hallway floor is in any way practical, safe, hygienic, or reasonable.

AIBU?

If you receive a bagless food delivery what do you actually do when it arrives? How do you get every from front door to kitchen?

To confirm, I AM NOT disputing the need to reduce plastic waste. I just don’t know what to do with 100 separate items on my floor.

Ah ok, it seems like the consensus is one crate at a time. But don’t you graze your knuckles on the doorframes you walk through…?

@Ducksurprise Tesco. I left out the boring bit of detail about how I have not ordered online for quite some time and now I’ve started again this bagless malarkey has come into play.

@gobbynorthernbird yes.

I did also once try packing everything into bags for life but that seemed like such a faff as well.

IKEA blue bags sound like the best idea so far.

Thank you

Ocado

Pascha · 02/03/2022 19:46

I use my big blue IKEA bag, a bag for life and a cool bag for the frozen bits. It's really not an issue.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 02/03/2022 19:47

I either use my bags for life (the canvas/jute ones) or my sizeable collection of laundry baskets.
I still do it at the door because with a toddler and two dogs I can't leave my front door open for more than 20s without one fucker trying to get out.

ChurchlightJane · 02/03/2022 19:47

Half a dozen ikea bags by the front door

BitOutOfPractice · 02/03/2022 19:48

Take the crate into kitchen and dump shopping on work surfaces then take crate back to the driver. It never occurred to me to do it any other way tbh

Bytrgrewd · 02/03/2022 19:48

I Chuck into big shopping/IKEA bags at the door. One delivery man told me he had people who pick up a few items and take through to the kitchen, and do this the whole shop a few items at a time. He said it’s so frustrating as they take so long!

LittleOwl153 · 02/03/2022 19:50

As them to drop them inside your doorstep not outside... solves that problem. Its where my tesco driver drops them without being asked unless I stand on the doorstep!

itseasy · 02/03/2022 19:50

Before Covid the delivery drivers for Tesco would bring the crates to my back door which opens into my kitchen. Worth asking if they would do that if you have a similar house layout.

Charbead49 · 02/03/2022 19:50

I just carry each basket to the kitchen. That's what I thought you were meant to do! Can't imagine chucking it onto the hallway dloor

partytime50 · 02/03/2022 19:50

Before Covid the delivery man would carry the crates into my kitchen for me.
Sometimes they would help unpack and take crates out while I continued.

I don't know if they are allowed to come.into the home these days as I do click and collect every week now.

WeirdlyKind · 02/03/2022 19:53

Morrisons do this and I hate it. Had one today in the rain and all my cardboard stuff was soaked through.

Heronwatcher · 02/03/2022 19:54

There are loads of options:

  • take crate through to kitchen table and unpack it quickly;
  • have large bags/ collapsible crate or shopping trolley by door and unpack the crate there (if heavy);
  • get a towel and put it on the hall floor and put the food on it, then either carry a few things through at a time or drag the towel through.
I really don’t see the issue TBH this is one of the least intrusive things we can do, it now seems beyond ridiculous to me to use carrier bags when the food is delivered to the house.
Chouetted · 02/03/2022 19:54

@floppybit

I carry each crate through to the kitchen and pile it all on the kitchen table, then carry back the empty crate and pick up a new one. I didn't know you were expected to put it on your hallway floor!!
Lucky you for having a kitchen table!

The crates won't fit in my kitchen, believe me, I've tried Grin

I have some colour coded bags specifically for the purpose, and chuck things in at the door. The driver usually helps too - saves time for them. The colour coding makes that easier, since it's obvious what goes where.

Unload crates into Bag for Life type bags at the doorway.

Chat to delivery person during process.

Heave loo / kitchen roll straight into house via a throw / kick.

Place wine bottles to one (precious) side.

Delivery done and dusted in 10 mins max.

Put away at leisure.

NO DRAMA.

Glendaruel · 02/03/2022 20:11

I have a couple foldable crates that I use for the washing and when shopping comes. Items go straight from there box into mine then I lift it through. Foldable crates have been great for sorting stuff out and moving around house. I even use them for going on holiday

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/03/2022 20:11

I unload at the door into bags for life. BUT..I have a really bad back and this action sets it off. It’s the stoop swivel. Anyway….

I mainly use Ocado because they have bags which they take back and recycle and pay you for them and other bags.

I understand the eco reasoning but for me bags are more helpful as it really hurts my back.

ShakespearesSisters · 02/03/2022 20:19

I decant it into ikea bags and then carry to the kitchen.

Userno36372846 · 02/03/2022 20:36

Do you not get your shopping delivered often because it's been bag less for ages here not including pandemic times when shopping was delivered in bags temporarily.

Anyway, sometimes I just dump it all into boxes/bags in the hallway and carry into kitchen. Or sometimes I just Chuck it all on the carpet/stairs 😅

Ostryga · 02/03/2022 20:39

I hate unloading my delivery. I always think the delivery driver is judging my packing 😂

But yes I’m a bag at the door woman.

This! I wouldn’t even consider for a minute taking it crate but crate into the kitchen. I am pretty sure delivery drivers are on a tight schedule that they are measured by so while they may be polite I bet they are cursing under their breathe

Always just had big bags at door, empty crate content into bag and do the next. Takes less than a couple of minutes even with a big order

EatYourVegetables · 02/03/2022 20:54

Your floor at home is certainly cleaner than a supermarket trolley.

AlwaysLatte · 02/03/2022 20:59

I think it's an easy way to save plastic. We just have big reusable bags ready for the delivery and quickly put the shopping in, if if we forget to get the bags out of the car we just put the shopping on the hall table then get the bags after the van has gone.
