Online food orders- bagless delivery

125 replies

ViaRia · 02/03/2022 19:28

Hi
My supermarket has switched to bagless deliveries. I understand the benefits of cutting down on plastic waste but I’m not sure that simply unloading all these individual items on my hallway floor is in any way practical, safe, hygienic, or reasonable.

AIBU?

If you receive a bagless food delivery what do you actually do when it arrives? How do you get every from front door to kitchen?

To confirm, I AM NOT disputing the need to reduce plastic waste. I just don’t know what to do with 100 separate items on my floor.

We take down bags for life, but every week I still get irritated, it should be personal choice, I'm disabled and find it difficult. X

Simplelobsterhat · 02/03/2022 22:23

I carry the crates through. I do unpack them quickly though and often end up putting some on the floor if work tops cramped (plus easier to put in fridge from there!). Not sure why some people are so aghast at food on floor - it's all wrapped usually?

I get the driver to leave it at garage door as that's quickest route to kitchen so I don't have to carry them far.
Before covid the drivers would bring the crates into the kitchen for me- I guess if I was disabled (or pregnant with spd again, which was what started me using deliveries initially) I would ask them to bring it through again.

Dartsplayer · 02/03/2022 22:25

@JumpingFrogs

Ocado still use bags. They charge 10p per bag but will pay that back when you return them for recycling
Morrisons do the same
longwayoff · 02/03/2022 22:27

I ask the driver to pack it into a couple of shopping trolleys. I can't lift it which is one of the reasons I have it delivered. It is no 'greener' than when it came ìn plastic bags as we now have to buy plastic bags for rubbish rather than recycling the supermarket carriers. At least they served two purposes.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 02/03/2022 22:42

@floppybit

I carry each crate through to the kitchen and pile it all on the kitchen table, then carry back the empty crate and pick up a new one. I didn't know you were expected to put it on your hallway floor!!
This is what I do too.
fluffi · 02/03/2022 22:43

I prefer bagless delivery I find it quicker and easier to unload crates than faff around inside several several plastic bags. Ocado is super annoying only putting a few items in each bag too.

Whether bagged or bagless, I just unload everything onto the hallway floor as fast possible so the driver can get away to their next person and then move batches of items to the kitchen / bathroom once they've gone.

Nanny0gg · 02/03/2022 23:05

@partytime50

Before Covid the delivery man would carry the crates into my kitchen for me. Sometimes they would help unpack and take crates out while I continued.

I don't know if they are allowed to come.into the home these days as I do click and collect every week now.

Yes they do.

I wasn't able to carry crates and DH wasn't home, so nice delivery man carried to kitchen and then even unloaded a couple for me.

TheMagpie · 02/03/2022 23:06

I'm disabled and bagless deliveries are a nightmare for me.

Nanny0gg · 02/03/2022 23:06

Must say, I couldn't be arsed unpacking in the hall then carrying to kitchen.
Why don't you all just take the crates through? They allow waiting time

PickAChew · 02/03/2022 23:11

If dh is home and available, he brings the crates into the kitchen so I can unload them onto the worktop.

If he isn't available, the drivers will bring them in for me - waitrose. Since losing bags they have been given no more time to do the deliveries. I have a bad back and weak hands and need everything on a high surface or else I hurt myself. If the need to come in, I open windows before they arrive and wear a mask.

PickAChew · 02/03/2022 23:13

@Ducksurprise

Who have you been using that still had bags?

I'd pay a premium for bags, they could be recyclable or swappable but I hate no bags

Ocado still do bags.
PickAChew · 02/03/2022 23:15

@WabbitsAndWeasels

Bagless has been pretty normal since pre-pandemic with bags making a brief return in the lockdowns and now back to normal.

Most people have their re-usable/bags for life ready at the front door before a delivery is expected. I've also heard of people using plastic collapsible boxes etc. Just think of it like you would if you were actually packing after in store purchase. I actually find this much more convenient than having loads of plastic bags I now need to find a home for.

In the supermarket, I don't need to bend down or crawl on my hands and knees to pack my bags. In my 3'wide hallway, I do. I can't carry a full crate any more.

HadaVerde · 03/03/2022 05:20

I hate bag less deliveries.

It’s ok if you get small/medium shops and are fit/able bodied but it really doesn’t suit everyone.

I could unpack at my convenience when it was bagged. Honestly bagless deliveries fill me with dread.

I stopped using Tesco because of it.

Because some of us have tiny valley kitchens that barely fit a person, let alone crates of shopping.

You can't fit a crate anywhere in my kitchen - floor or surface!

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/03/2022 05:29

This. Unload each crate onto kitchen worktop, hand back to driver and collect another.

Alternatively, keep a couple of large wash baskets and bags by door, unload into those and carry those through

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/03/2022 05:36

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen

Unload crates into Bag for Life type bags at the doorway.

Chat to delivery person during process.

Heave loo / kitchen roll straight into house via a throw / kick.

Place wine bottles to one (precious) side.

Delivery done and dusted in 10 mins max.

Put away at leisure.

NO DRAMA.

The drivers are always keen for a chat. I'm always told there's no rush. They allow 10 mins per delivery so plenty of time to unload if you have a sensible system
PinkSyCo · 03/03/2022 05:37

Blimey your supermarket’s a bit behind the times isn’t it? I chuck it all into a big Ikea bag or 2.

HELLITHURT · 03/03/2022 06:00

@TheRealityCheque

I stopped getting deliveries once bagless became a thing.

It's a faf I can't be arsed with.

What's wrong with paper bags?

More of a faff than actually going to a shop?
EffOrfagain · 03/03/2022 06:05

I use the large Ikea bags, we buy several when we go to Ikea as they have many uses

ittakes2 · 03/03/2022 06:13

I bought a one of those modern old lady shopping trolleys and transfer into that and wheel shopping into kitchen.

Darbs76 · 03/03/2022 06:15

Yeah must admit it is a pain. Tesco have been doing to for a while now. I have a few big bags and load them in at the door. Last week the delivery guy said give me a bag I’ll bag these ones which helped. I much prefer the bags but understand why they aren’t using them now, but sure it must take longer for every delivery

Vie8126 · 03/03/2022 06:17

Hate this too!! I'm another one with a dog so I have to shut the gate on the kitchen so he can't escape out the front door and tip the shopping out on the rug in the lounge then carry it to the kitchen work tops/put away. I don't have enough work top to tip it all out directly to the kitchen anyway even if the dog was elsewhere. I'm likely to stop using deliveries as I find the whole thing such a pain in the arse. Iceland also still use bags had a few bits from them over the Xmas period (only place could get a delivery from) I will go back to using ocado seeing as they still provide bags.

zoemum2006 · 03/03/2022 06:43

I use washing baskets. I’ve been doing it like that before they went bagless.

MixedClassBaby · 03/03/2022 06:45

I get the kids involved. Production line to the kitchen table.
