Online food orders- bagless delivery

ViaRia · 02/03/2022 19:28

Hi
My supermarket has switched to bagless deliveries. I understand the benefits of cutting down on plastic waste but I’m not sure that simply unloading all these individual items on my hallway floor is in any way practical, safe, hygienic, or reasonable.

AIBU?

If you receive a bagless food delivery what do you actually do when it arrives? How do you get every from front door to kitchen?

To confirm, I AM NOT disputing the need to reduce plastic waste. I just don’t know what to do with 100 separate items on my floor.

I have a couple of IKEA bags. Decant everything from the crates into these bags at the doorstep. Takes a couple of minutes if that.

BooksAndHooks · 03/03/2022 07:00

I’m surprised you’ve only just lost bags we haven’t had them for a few years with our orders.

I unload everything at the door onto the bottom of the stairs and then take things through in handfuls. I prefer it like that as the pantry is in the hallway and a lot of the dry goods go straight in there.

It doesn’t take more than a few mins and I prefer it to being left with endless bags. If it’s that much of an issue have some large bags by the door and put the items in the bags as you unload them.

MintyFreshBreath · 03/03/2022 07:02

I just make sure I’ve got my bags for life ready to unload into. It’s quite a nuisance though and it feels so rushed with the driver waiting impatiently for me to get £200 worth of groceries packed up.

BooksAndHooks · 03/03/2022 07:04

@gobbynorthernbird

Seriously? You were planning on putting all your food on the floor?
This is what we do. Don’t see the issue the food is in packaging and my carpet is probably no more unhygienic than a shopping trolley that you’d be loading it into in the shop.
Sirzy · 03/03/2022 07:05

I Chuck everything into a bag for life or things like milk just stand inside the door. Takes a few minutes at most to unload then carry it through to the kitchen. It’s really not complicated (I know it would be harder for people with mobility issues but at least packing the bags yourself uou can make sure they aren’t too heavy)

BuyDirt · 03/03/2022 07:06

Carry each crate to the kitchen and put away each item. No way I’m unloading it all into bags and then putting it away, that’s like doing it twice.

You put away stuff while the driver is still there?
DoNotTouchTheWater · 03/03/2022 07:10

I carry the crates to the kitchen, dump the stuff in the island and then put it away when the delivery person has gone.

Pre-covid they’d always bring the crates in to the kitchen for me. But I guess that ship has now sailed.

Groovee · 03/03/2022 07:14

I put it into shopping bags to transport through.

You expect the driver to wait while you put your shopping away?

It was the delivery driver that told us go do it that way when they started bagless deliveries. We usually get the same few drivers that are all fine with it, we did check with each one. Most of the time, there’s always a couple of us here to put away so it doesn’t take long. Ive seen my friends use baskets/ bags for life at the door and they take longer than us. We know the drivers now, only occasionally we get a new one, they play with the dogs whilst we put it away. 😂

Sisisimone · 03/03/2022 07:32

Why don't you all just take the crates through?
Why don't you have a think about kitchen size?
Newsflash to everyone who can't fathom why everyone doesn't take the crates straight through and empty them on their island - lots of people don't have a fricking island...or spaces in the kitchen for crates.....or a kitchen table to simultaneously dump a weeks worth of shopping. I know its really, really shocking but some people have small kitchens 🙄

I mostly use Ocado for this reason. I think they're the only supermarket that recycles their bags. If I get a Waitrose delivery I have big bags for life at the door and empty them into that but can understand how the bending low to do this could be a pain if you had mobility restrictions. I wish they would use paper bags like in the US & like they used do here in the 80s

LaWench · 03/03/2022 07:42

I have the driver bring the crates straight to the back kitchen door and then I unload them on the counter.

I would have thought they meant take the crates and dump the shopping quickly on the counters. But if they’re fine with it that’s cool. Definitely better than the “few items at a time” approach!

When they first delivered bagless and I asked the best way to do it the driver said if it was him he’d put it away straight in the cupboard and fridge. I did query the time and he said it’s fine. The other drivers we’ve had have said that’s fine, but we usually get the same few drivers anyway.

obstacalling · 03/03/2022 08:25

Somebody posted this a couple weeks ago

We've had this for a few years. You'll get used to it

BabyTurtIe · 03/03/2022 08:34

I guess it depends how much shopping you have as well, I spend between £150/200 so I wouldn’t put that away whilst someone waits, if you only have a couple of crates it would be ok

BuyDirt · 03/03/2022 08:38

Our shopping is £200+, we still do it really quick.

elliejjtiny · 03/03/2022 08:43

I put a couple of those flexi tub things by the front door and dump everything from the crates into them. Then I carry them into the kitchen and unpack when the delivery driver has gone.

GoingtoGlasgow · 03/03/2022 08:49

I have Tesco delivery saver so pay a flat fee for unlimited deliveries. So I get 2 deliveries a week. This is great as it means the deliveries aren't massive and I just pop them into a couple of large reusable shopping bags (Costco & ikea ones) then take the to the kitchen. The delivery drivers are always rushed off their feet here so I don't want to carry each crate to the kitchen and unload as it would be more time consuming.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 03/03/2022 09:22

Like others , the driver puts the crates at the door and DH takes each crate to the kitchen. Unloads into the kitchen island and returns empty crate. Rinse and repeat. I don't give a shit if it delays them. I've paid for delivery. No one's ever complained.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 03/03/2022 09:32

I put it into a couple of large plastic boxes. I don't like leaving someone at an open door. One delivery person said oh that is a good idea. It must add a lot of time for them if everyone is carrying and unloading crates - it never occurred to me to do that.

You can pay extra for bags if you prefer.

Don’t you sound charming! I will make the menial worker wait because I am special enough to pay.

Of course they are not going to complain to you but the next person they are late for, because you are taking your time, will likely complain. And you will make them behind schedule which may mean them working late or not getting a break. But yeah continue to not give a shit, that makes everything ok

Emmacb82 · 03/03/2022 10:04

Tesco used to give you the big tray liners so we kept hold of them and decant the food into them before taking them through to the kitchen

abigailsnan · 03/03/2022 10:13

@JumpingFrogs

Ocado still use bags. They charge 10p per bag but will pay that back when you return them for recycling
I shop with Ocado and hand back my bags to the driver for a refund
