Just that really. Sociopathic Patel refusing visas. In a time where we need leadership & empathy & intelligence there's a ducking idiot at the helm & Rees~Mogg making a fortune with insider trading.
Who the hell will admit to being so sociopathically selffish & grabby to still vote Tory?

If posters are accepting this is a problem Labour won’t change it

Why not? That’s a very odd statement, what’s the rationale?

labyrinthlaziness · 16/10/2023 15:20

historiccastles · 16/10/2023 12:10

If they'd done what they actually need to do to fix the problem, which is a wholesale reform of the welfare system so that it is a safety net for the most vulnerable, like it was originally designed to do, they would have been even more unpopular than they are.

Our expectations of what the state should do to support us, the standard of living they are expected to afford everyone, regardless of circumstances, is absolutely unachievable. And it all stems from tax credits.

It's all going to crumble, sooner or later, whichever government is in power.

Why is it 'unachievable' in the UK but not in other European nations?

Our stagnant economy - again a Tory choice - is a big problem.

BIossomtoes · 16/10/2023 15:26

It’s not the welfare system that needs fixing, it’s the profiteering employers who rely on the state to supplement their miserable wages.

I see the Tory government has put our entire HMRC database at risk of hacking. Reassuring stuff!

Its been obvious for many years that the Tory party do not govern for the benefit of the UK, everything has got worse since they ve been in and corruption is awful.

Just a casual observation. Labour supporters have a lovely conversation during the day. No good @me for a response. I work. I know that’s a foreign concept on mn nowadays. I also don’t vote Tory. However, I won’t vote for a party who wants an ever increasing majority of my earned money to support over half of adults not paying in. No thanks.

BIossomtoes · 16/10/2023 18:22

I worked for 45 years. Isn’t that enough for you?

Former Boris Johnson adviser jumps ship to help boost Labour’s business plans. Iain Anderson quit the Tories after 39 years of membership and switched to Labour claiming the Conservative Party was ‘not the party it used to be’

The Independent newspaper forgot to mention that Iain Anderson was appointed Chair of Stonewall at the end of last year - not a surprise that he defected to Labour in February.

BIossomtoes posted a similar 'boast' about securing Iain Anderson a week ago.

Nope, you just want to keep the poor where they are ie cold unhealthy and obese and pls don't put words in my mouth, i never mentioned "Foreign" food... but cheap food which means more addictive and processed foods with low or no nutrient content.

Food in the 70s was actually less processed, almost no fast food outlets, with low levels of obesity.
Taxing alcohol, cigarettes & more "authoritarian" health campaigns, has led to lower levels of usage.

Doubtless you'd also want to make education a choice too.

Yes. Govt involvement in education is a terrible thing. Much more important than their destruction of health. I hold Govt education responsible for this mess.

In the slums of India, people choose private education and get better results.

The tory party has lost the vote of most forward thinking business leaders. Who they would vote for instead is not clear but it’s clear they are sick to the back teeth of rhetoric, poor quality decision making and short termism.

A few representatives of big business and the vast majority SMEs who WANT clear strategy from government, and more carefully designed regulation that fosters good business practice. This message was clearly spelt out by the keynote speakers, which included dragon investors, and CEOs, and was widely agreed with amongst audiences.

If businesses don’t have a stable environment to invest, some will give up, some move overseas. Some business leaders can afford to retire or do something they enjoy that just employs themselves and pays pocket money. Which means fewer skilled jobs, increased risk of poverty for the people who rely on the income, and people in the businesses who supply them, with spirals into the wider economy. The economy contracts. We all get poorer. There’s already been a substantial brain drain that has weakened UK industry / academic partnerships.

I used to think at one time that the Tory party was about empowering the poor by creating plenty of job opportunities - the party of aspiration and all that. But according to you they are the opposite.

That’s right. There is no one to vote for.

Tories have grown tax and regulation. Both parties want to carry on doing that.

Leaving or taking a parasitic Govt jobs are the only options for bright young people.

And poorer people will suffer most from the excessive burden of Govt, as usual.

This will get a whole lot worse before people are prepared to think about the causes.

Tatumm · 17/10/2023 00:11

Totally disagree, there are still plenty of opportunities for enterprising young people other than working for local government. That would be a truly depressing scenario 😁

Regulations are necessary if we want to live in a comfortable, civilised way. For instance the health and safety at work act has driven sharp reductions in incidents of death, and serious injury in UK workplaces. As an employer I don’t resent the obligations these things place on us at all. Protecting the workforce from harm is basic and non negotiable.

Tax is fine too. We need to pay tax to maintain the services we rely on and invest. The problem is that the corrupt tories failed to manage it properly or invest in infrastructure. They couldn’t even get it together to finish HS2!

Personally I will vote for whoever gets the tories out, a different party can hardly do any worse than the current lot, or maybe we will return a hung Parliament.

@R37sraY out of interest are you American? Using the expression parasitic local gvt jobs is very weird.many local gvt jobs are very very necessary. My own belief is that this country has too many 'middle man' jobs-estate agents, recruitment consultants etc- but it is what it is I guess. The Tory's are exceptionally poor on business, ironically most business and industry I know prefer labour (apart from things like hedge funders) - which is hardly an irreplaceable industry

Yes being fortunate enough to pay higher rate whilst working i agree with you!

Why have we allowed so many workers to earn do little that they cannot afford to "pay in" as you so accurately put it?

I had regular inflation matching or beating pay rises in the 80s 90s and 2000's as did most other workers but along came this current iteration of the Tory party and that all stopped... leading to greater reliance on the state.... its under the Tories that the vital work our care industry does attracts little more than the NMW... and in work benefits...

no thanks!

In answer to the original post.

People who think it’s ok for the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Defence and Deputy Prime Minister to have a good giggle on the front bench behind the Prime Minister while he makes a statement about the current Israeli-Palestinian “tragedy”?

I find it mildly amusing that the current (mysteriously uncelebrated) polling for both upcoming by elections shows that even if the LibDems and Labour split the anti-Tory vote, it still won't win them the seat. The powerful message being it doesn't matter who you vote for if you want the Tories out.

(I also notice the quick sinking of stories suggesting Labour and LibDems had stitched up an unofficial electoral pact, suggesting there is some smarts behind them somewhere).

Had anyone else half-forgotten there are two by elections this week ?

Have you considered voting for the Greens instead?

It's not a labour boast. It's another indication of how rubbish Tories are now that even their long term fans are jumping ship.

It was a boast - they've used the word coup in the article, although essentially it's old news recycled from February.

Asked about single-sex spaces, Anderson said it was a sensitive topic; he recognised that there is a conflict of rights, but he thinks that men with a gender-recognition certificate have a right to use women-only spaces.
