AIBU to stream UKranian music in support?

felicmargo · 25/02/2022 11:15

The situation is terrible , and we all feel relatively powerless. This morning I asked Alexa to play Ukranian music. As well as broadening my horizons and finding some hauntingly beautiful music in my randomised play list, I figured that if enough of us do it, even though streaming services pay artists poorly, we may be able to somehow support the people of Ukraine and their economy. Am I being naive? We must hope that sanity prevails and Putin is stopped in his tracks, but AIBU to hope this shows some sort of solidarity?

OP posts:

@lessthanathirdofanacre

The OP's suggestion won't help in a small way. It won't help at all. If you really want to support the Ukrainian people, make a financial donation to the Red Cross or another reputable charity.

I honestly have no patience with the "you're all such meanies" posts. The OP of this thread is ridiculous. And in very poor taste despite the apparently good intentions. There is nothing wrong with pointing that out.

This. ^ I wonder if any of the 'Angry of Ealing' and 'Pearl Clutcher' type posters will be giving to any Ukrainian charities or fundraising groups? And I wonder if they would take in a refugee? They'd never do ANYthing like this!... this type never do! All hot air.

I also just got a message from MN about why my posts were instantly 'hidden' until the team could look at them. It's just that I posted something that's not allowed on the boards, and the algorithm picked it up and stopped it being posted! Nothing awful, just against da roolz!

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 25/02/2022 20:22

@Motherofgorgons

There are some very strange threads today.
It's totally understandable, don't you think? People are affected in different way. Some people are practical, know best way to act. Some people are less so. But we are all affected by this.
Girlmumdogmumboymum · 25/02/2022 20:27

Very naive, but I guess whatever makes you feel like you're being supportive. It's a shit situation, what can any of us do that will improve the situation in Ukraine at all

TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 20:27

@BearOfEasttown

It's happened again!!!
What are you doing that's so controversial Bear GrinGrin
TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 20:28

@grapehyacinthisactuallyblue

Opinions, sure. But nothing good comes out of from just opinions, especially the nasty ones. Those who are sneering could have pointed out the way to go for OP and others. Could have made this thread more worthwhile if you knew better and direct people to better way to help. What do they achieve by making fun of OP? Nothing.
It's not the job of posters who disagree to signpost links to reputable charities Confused
BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 20:34

@TheUsualShitshow Nothing too bad. Smile I will pm you. I don't wanna say on here lest I get into trouble.

Juno22 · 25/02/2022 20:34

I apologise. I included a link to a charity as I didn't realise it wasn't allowed.

Crankley · 25/02/2022 20:37

Someone, please tell me this is a joke.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/02/2022 20:39

Really?

Eurovision’s been cancelled, if that helps?

Listen to whatever you like, though.

I don't think it has been cancelled has it? But Russia are banned from it.
CaptainMarvelDanvers · 25/02/2022 20:45

We can donate to Ukraine’s military. Their government have giving information on how to donate.

jc12689 · 25/02/2022 20:45

Eurovision’s been cancelled, if that helps?

Unfortunately it hasn't so it doesn't help any of us.

Hollyhead · 25/02/2022 20:48

@pigsDOfly actually if an extra million people streamed the music of Ukrainian artists they would directly see the massive increase in streams hence a morale boost. The op was trying to muster support for a mass approach.

It has, for Russia, read the news.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 25/02/2022 20:48

It will only work if you post your charitable deed on Facebook so everyone can see how much you care and how much you’ve sacrificed for the people of Ukraine. Maybe you can even start a ‘Ukraine music challenge’ which can go viral and you be interviewed on Lorraine!

feellikeanalien · 25/02/2022 20:51

I don't remember this kind of reaction when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008.

ClingClingDin · 25/02/2022 20:53

View this video, for a morale boost instead Op.

'We are still here' says defiant Ukraine President Zelenskyy on streets of Kyiv

🤣
ClingClingDin · 25/02/2022 20:56

Top YT comment This president has some balls of steel. Other world leaders should take notes^, he sounds so self assured and reassuring. Sad

jc12689 · 25/02/2022 21:03

It has, for Russia, read the news.

Russia being told it can't participate isn't the same thing as Eurovision getting canceled. Maybe you should learn to interpret the news properly Smile

Plus it was a slightly tounge in cheek comment about Eurovision being so bad that we would have all have benefited from it being cancelled

Moonmelodies · 25/02/2022 22:39

You could try streaming some banging Don and Bass if it helps.

TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 23:15

IIRC in 2008 social media hadn't yet hit peak 'cesspool of selfishness'.

Cut to today, and I just went on LinkedIn, and the first post was some mediocre business dude scolding people for posting anything other than Ukraine-related content.

liveforsummer · 26/02/2022 04:43

@Fernsinthegarden

Only works if we discover the Russians are Martians and the song is Indian Love Call.
Well there was a post earlier where someone was talking about the Urainian invasion so perhaps you're not far wrong there

Touché 🤣

ShittyFingers · 26/02/2022 13:07

@felicmargo

😂😂😂😂 omg OP I’m cringing for you! Made me laugh though so thanks for that!
