AIBU to stream UKranian music in support?

The situation is terrible , and we all feel relatively powerless. This morning I asked Alexa to play Ukranian music. As well as broadening my horizons and finding some hauntingly beautiful music in my randomised play list, I figured that if enough of us do it, even though streaming services pay artists poorly, we may be able to somehow support the people of Ukraine and their economy. Am I being naive? We must hope that sanity prevails and Putin is stopped in his tracks, but AIBU to hope this shows some sort of solidarity?

MN is a very strange place today

Damnloginpopup · 25/02/2022 12:59

I thought yesterday was weird.

Traumdeuter · 25/02/2022 13:00

It’s not really in the same league as donating to the Red Cross or another charity that is or can be on the ground in Ukraine - maybe try that?

I've put in a rogue 'the' in that post above, I feel like Nick Robinson saying Kiev instead of Kjiv.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/02/2022 13:06

Could I recommend Verka Serduchka with Bce Budet Khoroaho?

GraffitiNob · 25/02/2022 13:07

People are being very unreasonably harsh

A lot of us are feeling odd, sad and helpless. Some folks just happen to be reaching out on here to talk about it. We might be safely tucked up in our homes over here, currently out of danger (fingers crossed it stays that way) but we are still empathetic. Some maybe a bit more so.

And it's a valid question. If every UK household used Alexa or Spotify or another streaming service to do this, on the same day at the same time for example, it would have an effect on the song/ artist records that people can see.

It won't stop the war. But it's still an act of solidarity in my book.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 25/02/2022 13:13

I've been reading reddit earlier, and there are posts from all over the world supporting Ukrainein many different ways. And there are always people who post negative comments about them, in every post.

People who listen to the music thinking about the suffering of the people in Ukraine, and people ridicule the true empathy of someone, which people would you rather be?

Georgeskitchen · 25/02/2022 13:16

You can listen to anything you like in the privacy of your own home. What's inadvisable though is telling the nest of vipers which is mumsnet

girlwiththetigertattoo · 25/02/2022 13:17

What's wrong with what op is doing? She can't arm herself and fight against putin, she wants to show solidarity. Some people are sending prayers, some people fight back, some people protest and some want to have Ukraine in their thoughts by listening to Ukrainian music.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 13:18

Is that you Meghan

girlmom21 · 25/02/2022 13:19

@Cherriesarethebest

Margo is just being kind hearted! There's so little any of us can do.......pray maybe.....
The music suggestion would be more beneficial...
TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 13:20

Its a tie between this thread and the one where the OP doesn't have a season ticket to a club owned by a Russian Oligarch but wanted to let us know that she certainly won't be buying one now.

thanktor · 25/02/2022 13:20

Stream it

But arm yourself with a pair of sound silencer ear phones if I were you or have on mute

Awful stuff

🤦‍♀️ Of course there’s a pop at Meghan to be found in the chaos…
Whammyyammy · 25/02/2022 13:29

We could all watch last years eurovision song contest at 8pm whilst sending our thoughts and prayers 🙏

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 13:32

I enjoyed their statement standing with the people of Ukraine.

Agree with this.

Also it seems many are sneering without actually understanding what op was saying, which makes you look incredibly stupid.

Yes op, by playing their music the Ukrainian artist will get a small amount of royalties, and if enough of us do that, it might help those on the ground a little bit whose life have been thrown into total chaos, it's not a stupid suggestion at all.
Most decent people feel helpless, and this is a very small thing we can all do.

Fernsinthegarden · 25/02/2022 13:33

Can’t believe Russia are being allowed into this years Eurovision because ‘it’s not a political event.’

girlwiththetigertattoo · 25/02/2022 13:34

I remember a couple of good songs from Ukraines eurovision entries which won. here's one from the 2016 win:

lessthanathirdofanacre · 25/02/2022 13:35

Play any music you like. But don’t pretend it will have any effect on the situation. And maybe avoid posting such random and useless ideas on MN. This thread is utterly tasteless given the reality that Ukrainians are facing. Some thoughts are best kept to oneself.

SlashBeef · 25/02/2022 13:36

I shouldn't laugh but...come on 🤣🤣

RoastedFerret · 25/02/2022 13:37

I've seem people on social media asking for Ukrainian small businesses that they can support right now. I suppose this is the same really, trying to financially support Ukranians in what must be an horrific time.

But this is the thing isn't it, we can't have any effect on the situation. We are helpless. Putting some money via royalties in this case into the pockets of Ukranians may be a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things but I wouldn't call it tasteless.
