AIBU to stream UKranian music in support?

The situation is terrible , and we all feel relatively powerless. This morning I asked Alexa to play Ukranian music. As well as broadening my horizons and finding some hauntingly beautiful music in my randomised play list, I figured that if enough of us do it, even though streaming services pay artists poorly, we may be able to somehow support the people of Ukraine and their economy. Am I being naive? We must hope that sanity prevails and Putin is stopped in his tracks, but AIBU to hope this shows some sort of solidarity?

In 20/30/50 years time when children are learning about this in history they will talk about the public’s reaction. Just imagine:

People were refusing to buy Chelsey season tickets, even though they never bought them in the first place.

Were questioning whether they should flea the UK or start prepping, and wanting to know where the nearest nuclear bunker was.

And …

Streaming Ukrainian music on Spotify.

😂😂😂

scatterolight · 25/02/2022 13:45

Haha, how ridiculous. This post is like this meme doing the rounds...

thanktor · 25/02/2022 13:46

Ukrainian music is appalling. Seriously shit.

Doesn’t mean I don’t support Ukraine 100%

Not in the eyes of the OP though!Grin

SickAndTiredAgain · 25/02/2022 13:47

Well, it’s no less helpful than “sending prayers”

lessthanathirdofanacre · 25/02/2022 13:51

If you want to help the people of Ukraine, do something practical. Donate money to a reputable organization. The tiny amount of money that some musician might receive because you play their song won’t do any good whatsoever. Not to mention the fact that musicians who are internationally successful probably aren’t in need of a few extra pennies. But I suppose if it makes you feel virtuous, that’s all that matters. Hmm

lessthanathirdofanacre · 25/02/2022 13:54

Ukrainian music is wonderful BTW. But that is beside the point completely.

CIaireFraser · 25/02/2022 14:08

@NobodysGonnaKnow

Is that you Meghan
And today's prize for shoehorning in a dig at MM goes to...
Smokeahontas · 25/02/2022 14:10

I really don’t know if Mumsnet is being subjected to a massive trolling exercise today, because every post on Ukraine is just becoming more & more peculiar.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 14:16

I think it’s just a lot of anxiety. The need to do something.

SagittariusDwarf · 25/02/2022 14:21

@lessthanathirdofanacre

Play any music you like. But don’t pretend it will have any effect on the situation. And maybe avoid posting such random and useless ideas on MN. This thread is utterly tasteless given the reality that Ukrainians are facing. Some thoughts are best kept to oneself.
Exactly. Virtue signal piffling at its most obscene. Let's all fucking hold hands and sing Kum ba yah while we're at it.

Streaming on Spotify ffs 🤦🏻‍♀️

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2022 14:32

I think it's different. There seems to be an effort to manufacture anxiety in others.
TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 14:45

@NobodysGonnaKnow

I think it’s just a lot of anxiety. The need to do something.
There's also a lot of 'I have anxiety' when the reality is more like 'I feel anxious about something that is very likely to cause people to feel anxious'.

It's normal to worry about worrying stuff. It's not normal to splatter the internet obsessing about how a conflict in another country affects you personally.

Porcupineintherough · 25/02/2022 14:46

I think that's what is known as virtue signalling isnt it?

I'm sure many better opportunities to help the people of Ukraine will present themselves in the coming weeks, months and quite possibly years. The Red Cross has an appeal now that you might be interested in.

pigsDOfly · 25/02/2022 15:27

I think that's what is known as virtue signalling isn't it?

Yep.

Are we all going to post on social media now then about how avidly we're watching the news and how many times we've thought of the people of Ukraine during the course of a day? And for those so inclined how many prayers have been said?

Listen to whatever you like OP if it makes you feel better but it really makes absolutely no difference to the people of Ukraine. They will have no idea, whilst they're fleeing their home or trying to avoid being murdered by Russian troops that you've got their backs.

TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 15:30

I just saw this INCREDIBLY narcisstic tweet. What the actual fuck is wrong with people?! If you don't have any connection to a terrible incident, it is entirely possible for you to just say nothing at all.

Hmm To my fellow empaths whose hearts are breaking for those here & abroad, a thought you can take or leave as you need it:

It’s important to be informed & to ask how we can help, but if you need a break, take it. There is no shame in finding peace & calm before getting back to it.
Hmm

RobertaFirmino · 25/02/2022 15:38

My team are playing Chelsea in a cup final on Sunday. Mo Salah will show Abramovich who's boss.

Seriously though, if you want to help, we are likely to receive refugees. They will need clothes, shoes, toiletries, toys for the DC amongst other things. Why not find out where your nearest refugee charity centre is and have a good sort out at home.

TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 15:39

We're only accepting refugees who have family here already so maybe more of a trickle than a flood.

Thanks again, Tories!

OMG, this! Perfect example of instagram therapy. Social media are so ridiculous.

@GaiusHelenMohiam

Fucking hell. This might almost top the ‘donated to a Ukrainian animal charity’ post.
Nah, that one was very special.

We bloody better do Grin
BadgerStripes · 25/02/2022 15:49

FFS now I’ve heard it all OP 🤦🏻‍♀️

User5rh · 25/02/2022 15:50

How soon before flags appear on peoples faces on Facebook, or maybe its happened already.

TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 15:52

Oh it's everywhere, Twitter is awash. Did you know every time someone changes their profile pic to a Ukrainian flag Putin feels a teeny tiny stab in his heart?

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2022 15:57

FFS maybe be more like @UserThenLotsOfNumbers and suggest small things we can do rather than be an arse and take the piss out of the OP.

What a nasty bunch of posts.

nearlyspringyay · 25/02/2022 15:59

Jesus Christ. How fucking ridiculous.
