AIBU to stream UKranian music in support?

The situation is terrible , and we all feel relatively powerless. This morning I asked Alexa to play Ukranian music. As well as broadening my horizons and finding some hauntingly beautiful music in my randomised play list, I figured that if enough of us do it, even though streaming services pay artists poorly, we may be able to somehow support the people of Ukraine and their economy. Am I being naive? We must hope that sanity prevails and Putin is stopped in his tracks, but AIBU to hope this shows some sort of solidarity?

@UserThenLotsOfNumbers that’s a really useful link, thank you so much. Handy for everyone who keeps saying they want to help but don’t know how…

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 18:30

@SailingNotSurfing

Surely the OK is taking the piss? If not, it's an idiotic suggestion. If you want to be proactive and not a ridiculous virtue signaller, donate a few quid to the Red Cross.

Please let no-one I know, realise I post on a forum populated by tone deaf fools.

Agree!

I think I might see if I can source the England vs Ukraine football game (on youtube or something,) from the European Cup from last summer later. Just to show my solidarity and support for Ukraine. 🙄

TheUsualShitshow · 25/02/2022 18:44

A quick Google shows that artists receive about 0.003 cents per stream. So....a direct donation to a reputable charity is probably a much better bet.

betwixtlives · 25/02/2022 18:46

🙄 this must be a joke

Hollyhead · 25/02/2022 19:10

Some vile bitchy posters on this thread, there are over 200 million Spotify users worldwide, actually if you could get an extra million people streaming it would be a great mark of solidarity to those artists. Like I said before it won’t stop the conflict or prevent poverty, but it would be a similar mark of solidarity as all the NHS clapping that people were so enthusiastic about.

Exactly, as I said upthread, most of these being so rude have completely missed the point and are making themselves look spectacularly dim.

The nastiness is so uncalled for, don't agree with op don't post. You don't have to be a dick about it.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 25/02/2022 19:34

I was watching the news earlier, and the reporter was talking to a civilian. He asked what do you need, and he said weapons and moral support.

There are so much unity about this around the world. This thread by op ended up poster like UserThenLotsOfNumbers posting useful link that may help people to take more direct actions.

It's seriously no use people just being nasty about how others feel and want to do to help in their own way.
It's really unpleasant, sure you may have donated a lot of money and feel ok to sneer at people who just want to find a way, anyway to help support. But seriously you really sound vile.

But the OP, or anyone else, streaming Ukrainian music into their kitchen isn't helping is it?

It's doing nothing to support Ukraine or the Ukrainian people. It doesn't help financially and it doesn't give moral support; I suspect the moral support being asked for is support from governments around the world.

The only person affected by the OP's streaming activity is the OP who has posted on here, no doubt, in the hope that a load of poster will tell her it's a lovely idea and what good person she is to have thought of it.

How did my post get hidden? I only just posted it! ^ ODD! Confused

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 19:53

Like it said it was hidden before it appeared. WEIRD! Shock

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 25/02/2022 19:57

Some posters have already pointed out that doing what OP suggested may help in a small way. What is wrong with that?

Why do you assume the OP wanted any kind of appraisal by posting this thread? She may have just wanted to talk about the ways to help. By deciding her motives and being sneery about it, it killed the thread that could have been good.

I believe the comment you make reflect who you are. People who take everything in the negative way and assume the worst have some problem themselves, not the OP.

I suggest you google the meaning of the word 'OPINIONS.'

[quote UserThenLotsOfNumbers]This link contains information about various ways you can directly help people in Ukraine:

Thank you for posting this, @UserThenLotsOfNumbers - lots of good links on there. I was feeling pretty impotent but have used one of those links to make a donation to the UNHCR. It’s not on the same scale as those brave Russians out protesting, but it might help a tiny bit.

grapewine · 25/02/2022 20:05

the NHS clapping that people were so enthusiastic about.

Were people enthusiastic about it, though, or were they virtue signaling?

Thanks to PP for the gofundme link upthread.

It's happened again!!!

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 25/02/2022 20:08

Opinions, sure. But nothing good comes out of from just opinions, especially the nasty ones. Those who are sneering could have pointed out the way to go for OP and others.
Could have made this thread more worthwhile if you knew better and direct people to better way to help.
What do they achieve by making fun of OP? Nothing.

collieresponder88 · 25/02/2022 20:08

I've heard if you play it 24 hrs max volume it will def halt the war

lessthanathirdofanacre · 25/02/2022 20:08

The OP's suggestion won't help in a small way. It won't help at all. If you really want to support the Ukrainian people, make a financial donation to the Red Cross or another reputable charity.

I honestly have no patience with the "you're all such meanies" posts. The OP of this thread is ridiculous. And in very poor taste despite the apparently good intentions. There is nothing wrong with pointing that out.

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 20:09

My post got hidden before/as it posted! I quoted someone who included a link. Must be something to do with the link. ODD!
