Is the UK in danger from Russia?

Keep receiving conflicting information. I am sick to my stomach and quite simply hate the unknown. So a simple question - is it likely that the UK will be in danger from Russia? And if so what does that look like? Cyber attacks, bombs being dropped?

@Kinsters do you know they haven't and it done exactly how you describe anyway
Anything is possible and we rely heavily on automated systems for so many things

worriedatthemoment · 25/02/2022 16:05
 • isn't
worriedatthemoment · 25/02/2022 16:07

@Notlabeled yet its only us apparently doing nothing

Not much these days shocks me - but the sheer absolute arseholery of someone trying to doom-shit Covid (it's not even doom plopping anymore) over the fucking invasion of a sovereign state and people being worried and appalled by it - that shocks me.

I think I speak for many of us when I say, do one. You have an entire fucking board to do it on.

Chocolattay · 25/02/2022 16:07

Putin in a direct address to Ukrainian’s basically claims that he’s the hero who cares about them and he’s trying to save them from the big bad Nazi American’s.

CoffeeWithCheese · 25/02/2022 16:08

And my NHS laptop doesn't run Windows XP thank fuck, and IT push patches through to it incredibly regularly (usually right in the middle of a working day).

Jedsnewstar · 25/02/2022 16:11

People keep saying it's nukes but we've seen nukes before so I wonder if it's a cyber attack or something

I think he is going to ride up to Buckingham palace topless on the back of a Siberian tiger, moon the Queen and scatter back to his cave.

The UK was pushing to remove Russia from the SWIFT payment system, Germany, Italy and Hungary blocked it.

Still, at least those 5000 army helmets Germany are sending will come in useful......

Hate Boris and the UK as much as you want, its not us blocking sanctions in favour of selling handbags to the wives of Russian oligarchs.

Kinsters · 25/02/2022 16:12
@Kinsters do you think cyber attacks can only be done one by one or one at a time
Don't get me wrong in not sitting here overly worrying about it as there is jack shit I can do
But I do realise it could cause huge huge issues
I agree that the potential for disruption caused by cyber attacks is enormous. I just don't see there's any evidence that anyone could perpetrate such a large scale, targeted attack that would result in these disaster movie scenarios. Everywhere uses different computers, different software.

Wannacry was really far reaching but the results of it were minor in the grand scheme of things and nowhere near the post apocalyptic scenarios being described.

Dangers no not exist in a neat vacuum - a 'bubble' "coffee*

Anyone who genuinely understands national (and global security) knows that.

Ha yes he totally meant this as you say it needs to be totally new
MarshaBradyo · 25/02/2022 16:13

Kinsters you make good points re different systems

Tealightsandd · 25/02/2022 16:13

That was meant to bold Coffee in reply to her.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/28/uk-firms-warned-over-possible-russian-cyber-attacks-amid-ukraine-crisis

At the time this was written it was considered unlikely that the UK would be at risk.

However, if Putin's threat of consequences in the face of intervention can't possibly mean nukes, then cyber attack is the next thing in line. And he did say he had everything lined up already. If spies can pop in and out of the UK and poison people (Salisbury) who's to say there aren't bad actors in any facility who could access sensitive systems and data? At the end of the day, anything is possible and without a doubt, there are things going on we don't know......

Oh and coffee if you want someone to 'do one' (do what?), it's a good idea to stop posting to or about them. Personal insults included.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 25/02/2022 16:24

Well, there's another heavy hitting sanction for you..... Sky have just reported that no Russian acts will be allowed into the Eurovision. Admittedly they did say it might seem trivial.....

Oh Lord, what a time to be alive eh? Hmm

peboh · 25/02/2022 16:29

Who are you receiving conflicting information from? Every news article, and all the lives are reporting the same things.

fghjk · 25/02/2022 16:33

We certainly can't afford to have cut corners, minimalising, or false economy. And, much as many will furiously deny this, Long Covid is an issue. Many long term ill working age people (including many essential workers) will be a problem.

How you can type that we minimised covid with a presumably straight face is insane.

And I think the problem you're highlighting kinda pales in comparison to the things we are talking about on this thread.

A small minority of people with post-viral fatigue compared to the worst case scenarios we're talking about like cyber attacks, global food shortages leading to mass famine, nukes, and the potential for a Russia-China alliance the US can't defeat on its own (and thus the potential for a literal WW3).

But sure, lets get right back to a virus no more dangerous for most people than the cold, all those children up and down the country who can no longer walk the length of themselves due to LONG COVID (who definitely exist, I swear).

How we can even be discussing an actual invasion of a country full of actual people with actual bombs by an actual dictator in the face of terrors like Long Covid and atrocities like the London Housing Crisis is beyond belief. Sickening. Hmm

The west are a joke. A pathetic joke. This like something out of Brass Eye.

Go back to your containment board and indulge your covid obsession until your heart's content.

You're a hysteric, not someone "Genuine knowledgeable about national (and global) security"

Lol

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2022 16:34

@Bloodyshittystorms

The Taliban has called for peace ✌️, you know you are up the creek if the well know peaceful organisation like The Taliban is objecting !
I think the Taliban leadership may have had a bit of a quarrel with Putins friends in the past tbf.
the80sweregreat · 25/02/2022 16:36

They have cancelled a football match and their entry to the Eurovision Song Contest.
😕

I couldn't!! Italy!! Belgium!! How disgraceful!!!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 25/02/2022 16:40

I'm highly suspicious that my DP had two brain bleeds and died after his booster vaccine, and I am fully primed for that fight...

However, even that absolutely pales into insignificance in my head when I see the footage coming out right now? Did you see the guy run over by a tank in his car? By some miracle he survived, but when you've got a total wazzock like Putin claiming he's not targeting civilians and there's blatant evidence he - or his army - is, it's pretty clear we have bigger fish to fry than Covid OR vaccines.
