...to not be distraught about the war in Ukraine

donquixotedelamancha · 24/02/2022 21:54

AIBU to have no clue why so many people on MN are so worried?

In my lifetime there have been many terrible wars in other countries and this country has been to war five times. This war doesn't involve us and any effects on us will be minor compared to what we've just experienced.

I completely understand people feeling worried for Ukrainians (as for any country in crisis) but why so much worry for us?

Good for you

YABU

littleburn · 24/02/2022 21:57

YABU. Perhaps you should read a bit more about the situation and it's potential implications for us and Europe.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 24/02/2022 21:58

denial.....always one!

Toloveandtowork · 24/02/2022 21:59

I think it's because of how media saturated we are. People are letting the news run their lives while the media love scaring them.
It's very sad and a but hysterical.

Galaxyrippleforever · 24/02/2022 21:59

I think you're being naive about how this will affect us.

Wtfdoipick · 24/02/2022 21:59

Because this war won't stay in Ukraine and whoever putin turns his sight to next will be a Nato member which does drag us into it.

WhatdoImean · 24/02/2022 21:59

Well....

  1. People are dying (not a good starting point wondering why people are so upset as a direct result of action of Russia)
  2. There is a significant risk that other countries could be drawn into this - from my perspective, it looks like an attempt to rebuild the Russian Empire. Europe has a not good history with countries who expand their borders and are not stopped. Have a look at the early days of WWII for information
  3. If nothing else, consider the impact on already volatile energy market. YOUR prices are likely to further increase as a direct result of this.

All in all - yes, it is worrying.

We (in the UK) do not have bombers flying overhead, but we DO have an aggressive nuclear armed state on the borders of NATO taking over countries again. It is not re-assuring.

Can you remember the last time we were directly threatened by a country which has nuclear weapons?

PinkPlantCase · 24/02/2022 21:59

I agree OP but only from the point of view that I have enough shit to deal with and don’t want to add ‘war in Ukraine’ to my mental list of things I have to worry about.

Can I do anything about it? No. So what’s the point in getting all stressed about it.

BlondeWidow · 24/02/2022 21:59

Call me dramatic if you like, or say I’m catastrophising, but I genuinely believe this is the beginning of the end of civilisation in Europe as we know it. Those sanctions just weren’t enough. If anything they’ll just antagonise the situation to epic proportions. Putin is focused on ONE end goal. That’s the ‘big money’ to him and he won’t stop until he gets it - regardless of the collateral damage; whether that means destroying Ukraine, Western Europe (inc. us of course) or even the US and any other country to become allies with Ukraine. This is terrifying stuff. YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVU or just staggeringly naïve. This may well (hopefully) come to nothing, but this could also wipe out entire countries - including us!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 24/02/2022 21:59

Putin has threatened the West with nuclear retaliation a few hours ago.

I mean, that would be a bit annoying and inconvenient for most of us.

Landlubber2019 · 24/02/2022 21:59

Really? I am worried as I care about the families being affected. The fact I am unlikely to be directly affected doesn't mean I shouldn't worry about those that will be x

mummabubs · 24/02/2022 22:00

Regardless of what impact it may or may not have on us over here... Empathy. Seeing people who are so terrified they've leapt into their cars not knowing where their final destination may be but just knowing that home doesn't feel safe anymore. People are reacting because it's horrific and feels like history repeating itself.

Jaggerdagger · 24/02/2022 22:00

Ah yes, the "I don't care because it isn't happening to me" mentality. Keep thinking like that until it does happen to you, and then you'll feel upset that people other countries don't care...

Acheyknees · 24/02/2022 22:00

Sadly, unlike the other conflicts, this one involves a state with nuclear weapons

HJ40 · 24/02/2022 22:01

Ok, I'll bite. Off the top of my head, perhaps because how can this play out? We abandon Ukraine to her fate and Putin has carte blanche to move to the next country. Or we (the West/EU/NATO) intervene even though we have no jurisdiction to do so and it gives Putin reason to retaliate - he'll continue to spin it as we started it.

Oh, an Russia is pretty well stocked with nuclear weapons.

Notdoingthis · 24/02/2022 22:01

Have you not seen the footage of him threatening the world, us, if we try to stop him? Chilling.

KeyErro · 24/02/2022 22:03

Good for you.
Even if your house does not need heating, perhaps you could find it within your heart to give a shit about people who just got invaded by a rotten, totalitarian and utterly brutal regime.

maddening · 24/02/2022 22:03

Because Russia won't stop there, they want the USSR back, they will take many countries if they can, Russia is cruel, dangerous and has no regard for personal freedoms or democracy. My dad's family is from the Baltic, it is very worrying.

LubaLuca · 24/02/2022 22:04

I was going to make the same point. His message is genuinely frightening.
HiJenny35 · 24/02/2022 22:04

Because Putin has made it clear that there's a threat of nuclear strikes on countries that intervene and its looking very likely that we will. Our alliance with America also makes us vulnerable as its easier for them to strike us than America. I mean personally I'm not watching too much of the news and trying not to dwell but to not be concerned I'd say is rather nieve.

WulyJmpr · 24/02/2022 22:05

If you're not bothered about dying children and other innocents then at least try to think bigger picture as other posters have reasoned.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2022 22:07

YABU and I can’t fathom wtf MNHQ deleted the previous thread.
God forbid our feather’s should be ruffled.

noodlezoodle · 24/02/2022 22:08

I always forget that there are people who don't give a shit about anything that doesn't personally affect them.
