...to not be distraught about the war in Ukraine

AIBU to have no clue why so many people on MN are so worried?

In my lifetime there have been many terrible wars in other countries and this country has been to war five times. This war doesn't involve us and any effects on us will be minor compared to what we've just experienced.

I completely understand people feeling worried for Ukrainians (as for any country in crisis) but why so much worry for us?

Perhaps you should read a bit more about the situation and it's potential implications for us and Europe.

What precisely is it you think I don't know?

Can you remember the last time we were directly threatened by a country which has nuclear weapons?

Yes, the cold war.

Putin has threatened the West with nuclear retaliation a few hours ago.

No he didn't. Regardless, the UK has made quite clear it won't be sending troops to Ukraine.

I do completely understand those worried for people in the Ukraine (see OP) or about energy prices.

I genuinely believe this is the beginning of the end of civilisation in Europe as we know it.

Yeah, that's the bit I don't get.

I think the 24hour news channels tend to foster strong reaction to the news, with constant replaying of footage. Very different to when people got their news mainly from radio or newspapers, and maybe one TV broadcast a day.

And yes, Ukraine today. But if the aim is to recreate the USSR, then who next? The others are:

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.

Now some of those I can see wouid happily become client states. But there are 3 NATO members on that list too, and Biden has today reaffirmed that an attack on one is an attack on all. Somwhat happens if Putin decides he wants a corridor to Kaliningrad?

Blue4YOU · 24/02/2022 22:10

OP - with the greatest respect- which wars have been so terrifying?
By that I mean Russia now has control of Chernobyl..
Putin has no soul. He directly threatened every other country or any country that threatens his attempts.
If you mean to compare this to war in Iraq or Afghanistan or civil wars - none of them ACTUALLY had weapons of mass destruction (despite what we were told) or a man like Putin who can take down our banks, our internet (at a very minimum), send us into immediate oblivion if he so decides.
I’m not sitting here terrified but I’m curious as to what other war you think went a bit like this in your lifetime..? (Or ever)

Mischance · 24/02/2022 22:11

What is the matter with this man? And all the other men over hundreds of years who have a desire to dominate, and who seem to be able to drag in their country people to prosecute pointless war on their behalf. I am sure that the ordinary Russian-in-the-street just wants to get on with life - love their family, bring up their children, live happily. It is sickening. Maybe he will slip down the stairs or have a heart attack or fall under a bus .........

I have no idea why these crazy people behave in this way. It is grotesque to think he was once a sweet little baby, and fun little boy ..... what went wrong?

And why now?

I worry for those of my dear GC who are old enough to understand what is going on.

I feel very very angry; and very very sad.

Maybe women should run the world .....

Blue4YOU · 24/02/2022 22:11

OP the Cold War wasn’t actual war though ..??

AnnieSnap · 24/02/2022 22:12

OP, are you just being provocative in order to watch a thread of people explaining the obvious, or are you that naive? I am not catastrophising ir living in fear, but I am pretty concerned. My concern is for the poor people on the receiving end of Putin’s aggression and also because he has just threatened the West with nuclear attack!

SplashinginPuddles1 · 24/02/2022 22:12

You sound completely ignorant.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2022 22:13

So, a fruitcake telling the world that they will face retaliation that history has never known should it try to “interfere” isn’t threatening the world with nuclear retaliation?

You’re as barking as Putin is.

abeanbaked · 24/02/2022 22:13

@noodlezoodle

I always forget that there are people who don't give a shit about anything that doesn't personally affect them.
Same. I cannot imagine trying to flee my home with my baby, being unable to do so and having to return to an unsafe area and just hope to make it through. It's fucking insane. And I care because the man is deranged and has the power and tools to bring us all down if he wishes to.
trollopolis · 24/02/2022 22:16

By that I mean Russia now has control of Chernobyl

Why is that so terrifying? I mean, Russia has 38 nuclear power stations of its own. Although the Chernobyl clean up will take another 40 years or so, if Russia wanted contaminated material (for what? dirty bombs?) then it's got it anyhow

Because some people have led very sheltered lives and/or have too much time on their hands...

Once you have had a few knocks in life you stop hyperventilating every time another threat arises.

I never understood the Covid hysteria either.

We have always lived in a dangerous world. There is bugger all most of us can do about Ukraine so get on with your life while you can still enjoy it.

Blinkingbatshit · 24/02/2022 22:18

I think op may well be being a gf for laughs….. if not they’re obv not too well versed in the recent history of international relations in this particular area. Maybe once they’re better educated on the subject they can come back and have a meaningful debate🤞.

You’re as barking as Putin is.

We don't know what it is.

It could be cyber attacks

It might even be be non-nuclear EMP weapons.

Or it could just be fighting talk

EngTech · 24/02/2022 22:19

Russia during the Cold War 😳

x2boys · 24/02/2022 22:19

Why do people keep starting these threads I have seen a few today ,you might not be worried op ,but Putin is a megalomaniac
It's very concerning .

Faevern · 24/02/2022 22:19

I seem to remember a few posts like this 2 years ago along the lines of why are people worried about covid when it’s not affecting us?

PurpleHollyhocks · 24/02/2022 22:20

Those of us who remember the Balkan conflict remember it being awful but having no impact on our day to day lives

This country has not been to war since 1945. There have been military campaigns, but none of them were wars. None of them came anywhere near one.
DementedPanda · 24/02/2022 22:21

Because as human beings, his can we stand apart when people are being treated like this. The footage is heart breaking

Deliberateplanning · 24/02/2022 22:21

Notice the goady OP didn't put this in AIBU with a vote attached Hmm

ButtockUp · 24/02/2022 22:22

Just watch the effing news OP!

TuscanApothecary · 24/02/2022 22:22

I can't take anymore stress in my head so I'm not thinking about it. What will be will be decided by those with lots more power than me.

I feel very sorry for any victims of war, in any war. I can't give them my mental energy right now.

I think the media are creating a frenzy, like they do about lots of things. I expect Ukraine will be taken over and the world will go on as no one will stop Russia. I don't believe he's going to directly attack us, or NATO countries.

The world is a very scary place right now, war, covid, refugees but actually that's been our whole history really.

Mb76 · 24/02/2022 22:23

Apart from this maybe not affecting you personally, your post is rather self centred. You are entitled to your opinion but why start a thread? Are you that insensitive or just desperate for attention? I don’t even know why I’m responding but I am angry as my cousin and his 2 year old twins are spending the night in a freezing basement near Kyiv tonight. Because their neighbourhood is not safe thanks to Putin’s “military operations”. But as long as you personally aren’t distraught, that’s ok then …. Good for you!
