...to not be distraught about the war in Ukraine

AIBU to have no clue why so many people on MN are so worried?

In my lifetime there have been many terrible wars in other countries and this country has been to war five times. This war doesn't involve us and any effects on us will be minor compared to what we've just experienced.

I completely understand people feeling worried for Ukrainians (as for any country in crisis) but why so much worry for us?

i think what i'm scared of is a mentally ill man, rumoured to be dying from cancer. he hasn't done much as president really so i worry this is his last hurrah, last chance to make it in to history books (for those who survive)

That’s what I said to DH earlier. Why are his people who will suffer from the sanctions and disgust of the world, not sorting him out? His speech about protecting Ukrainians who’d been killed and tortured by bombing the shit out of them was nuts.

NotTerfNorCis · 24/02/2022 23:00

It's going to be interesting. Russia will probably occupy Ukraine, despite Putin saying at the moment that they won't (he was saying until yesterday that they wouldn't invade). The West will retaliate with sanctions, maybe cutting off Russia's access to the SWIFT network. Then what will Putin do? He's already threatened 'the worse consequences in history' if the West tries to intervene. He's a proud man and if he was pushed into a corner... I'm not saying nukes, but it could get nasty.

gelatodipistacchio · 24/02/2022 23:01

Yawn

donquixotedelamancha · 24/02/2022 23:01

OP I thought Germany were ditching nuclear

Whether they will still do that in the current market is up for debate. Either way they still get much less of their energy demand from the short term gas market than us.

Long term prices are rising across Europe.

PP mentioned green targets but they were never going to be met by russian gas- they are investing in wind, biomass and solar.

Just because this is a forum dont be fooled by Russian propaganda.

I missed the post where someone said Russia was right to invade. I think we can all agree Putin is a bad man.

BoredZelda · 24/02/2022 23:02

No, but I wouldn't call him sane either.

I'd call him unpredictable.

Shadowsense · 24/02/2022 23:02

Again, please read all the pro Russian posts here. He could nuke us etc etc. Forums such as this shape thought and Russia knows this therefore will be posting

FrecklesMalone · 24/02/2022 23:02

One of my main worries is that people pertaining to be as ignorant as you have a vote.

AledsiPad · 24/02/2022 23:03

Imagine actually being the sort of person who finds posting something like this appropriate. Astonishing.

You are being extraordinarily unreasonable.

TuscanApothecary · 24/02/2022 23:04

What pro Russian posts? There aren't any pro Russian posts, just some people agreeing with the OP that they can't give it the mental headspace right now.

EmmaH2022 · 24/02/2022 23:04

@TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo

It has the potential to be the biggest conflict in our continent in 80 years.

If you are still struggling I'll set you up in a call with my colleague who's family and friends are in Kiev and she hasn't been able to contact them to see if they are safe.

Just cos it isn't on your doorstep doesn't mean it won't affect you.

Hmm

Mum is 83 and desperately upset at the prospect of another war.

That's another reason I have to keep calm though, it's hard caring for a parent and even harder when they are anxious, and just been through so much awfulness...

Add in work and health issues....I have to stay sane, that has to be my priority.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 24/02/2022 23:04

YANBU

I am utterly sick of the hypocrisy of the West when it comes to matters like this.

While we have been quick to voice outrage against Russia's invasion of Ukraine there has been almost complete silence over other ongoing armed conflicts around the globe. Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the US have rained down airstrikes on Syria, Yemen, and Somalia in the past 48 hours without so much as a whisper of objection from the masses. Conflicts rage unnoticed in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Haiti, Libya, Myanmar while thoughts of Afghanistan, so recently the focus of the western publics outcries, are now firmly out of sight and out of mind. It was only a few months ago mumsnet was awash with posters bleating on about the "terrible tradegy of abandoning innocent people to the Taliban". Now it doesn't even register.

Elsewhere UEFA have removed the champions league final from St Petersburg but will go ahead with the World Cup in Qatar. Similarly, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel have said they will boycott the Russian grand prix while happily attending the Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabian and two USA races.

To top it off our leaders speak of enforcing "tough" sanctions on Russia, but only those that don't risk upsetting the flow of oil and gas, and refuse point blank to acknowledge any wrong doing of their previous and continued military interventions around the world.

NATO and the West constantly talk about democracy, peace and freedom, yet we have been, and continue to be, the greatest threat to those ideals to anyone who doesn't fall in line with our way of thinking or bow down to the western war machinewhen we decide they need a change of regime, whether they ask for it or not.

Seenoevil1 · 24/02/2022 23:05

All you outraged people...the media is pulling your strings. Do you know Russia's Nord 2 gas pipeline intended to avoid Ukraine and Germany was happy to collaborate until recently?

Could you even pinpoint Ukraine on a map?

Do you know Ukraine wants to join Nato. It also has factions in the east fighting and some want to be part of Russia. Were not talking a neutral country like Switzerland, with toblerones and cuckoo clocks. This is a complex geopolitical situation and some of you are panicking because the telly has told you to!

How about you look at the situation in a bit more depth? Yes I am sorry for the innocent civilians but for those of you making sweeping statements about country's intentions: it ain't black and white!

donquixotedelamancha · 24/02/2022 23:05

@Shadowsense

This whole thread is Russian propaganda seeking to sway UK opinion. Don’t rise to it. Ignore the op
Yes, I admit it. A decade on MN commenting about women's rights, parking and penis beakers was an elaborate cover so I could persuade the UK not to join a war it wasn't joining anyway.
OP posts:
Shadowsense · 24/02/2022 23:05

The op is saying Putin is ‘bad’ whilst also minimising the issues and stating the west won’t be affected long term. Please don’t engage with Russian propaganda

Kassle · 24/02/2022 23:06

What is it with this place. 50% of threads convinced Putin is about to nuke us and the other 50% sneering at others for being so scared.

Has anyone actually got a balanced viewpoint?

BobLemon · 24/02/2022 23:06

YARFU

Seenoevil1 · 24/02/2022 23:07

@Thebestwaytoscareatory

Won’t dignify with a reasoned response - will just say you are a blinkered plonker. I’m feeling polite today.

Where are the pro Russian posts?

WildHorsesRunInMe · 24/02/2022 23:08

Your level of ignorance is astounding and quite frankly embarrassing. A good starting point might be to educate yourself on these matters before posting again.

Seenoevil1 · 24/02/2022 23:08

Good discussion peeps- great to hear some free speech 👍🌠

I said I don't understand why people in the UK are panicking.

What precise outcome do you think I have missed in my posts about the geo-political implications?

I see what you’re saying, OP. It’s not a lack of empathy, it’s just a calm response in your own shoes.

I think you’re getting a hard time and people are not really reading what you’re saying. The problem is that your opposers here are having an emotional response - so you aren’t going to be able to a common tone for a discussion.

Realistically, some people just don’t really worry about anything - even real things or immediate threats. It doesn’t make them bad people. They’re just made different.
