To be absolutely terrified of war

ladylalatub · 24/02/2022 16:01

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

OP posts:

I think the students are quite far off the mark with that kind of chat!! It is bad news- especially of course for Ukraine & if I had relatives there I would move them as I would from any conflict zone. I think it’s too early to tell how this will unfold, there will be some push back from the rest of the world very shortly so we’ll see how that goes. He’s a nutter that’s for sure and i don’t think it will go well for him at all x

Shiningpath · 24/02/2022 16:13

We’re a long way off that yet and panicking now won’t help you or anyone else.

Justkeeppedaling · 24/02/2022 16:16

To be absolutely terrified of war I think we all are.

Chikapu · 24/02/2022 16:20

Most sane people are terrified of war but what good does it do to be running around like a headless chicken talking about evacuation and conscription? It's highly unlikely that however much of a maniac Putin is that he'll unleash nuclear armageddon on the world, how would that benefit him? What of any worth would be left to him?

Oblomov22 · 24/02/2022 16:24

What exactly are you scared of. Yes Putin has form for this kind of stuff. So?

Weefreetiffany · 24/02/2022 16:25

Did you feel that way about Afghanistan and Iraq? Did those wars ever really finish? Take a breath and stop panicking. You’re just giving them what they want.

tiredanddangerous · 24/02/2022 16:27

Want exactly is being terrified going to achieve for you op? Switch off the news and carry on living your life.

emuloc · 24/02/2022 16:27

@Justkeeppedaling

To be absolutely terrified of war I think we all are.
Not everybody is.
Ostryga · 24/02/2022 16:29

It is fucking horrifying tbh. However, atm it’s mainly men trying to prove who’s dick is bigger. Sadly it does mean that innocent people are going to get caught up in their ridiculous behaviour.

I’ll start worrying if Putin sets his sight on more if he gains control of Ukraine.

He will imply he’s going to start a nuclear war on the west if they retaliate, but even he isn’t stupid.

HereComesTheSum · 24/02/2022 16:30

So many of these ridiculous threads today. 100% DM phishing for stories.

Deliberateplanning · 24/02/2022 16:30

What of any worth would be left to him?

Maybe he doesn't care, maybe he's been diagnosed with a terminal illness? Maybe he's just totally paranoid or has the beginnings of dementia? Not sure that logic stands up to much sadly.

DillonPanthersTexas · 24/02/2022 16:30

Makes a change from discussing gender pronouns, statues and what shade of blue hair is in this term.

etulosba · 24/02/2022 16:30

Not everybody is.

Indeed. Mildly concerned maybe.

SugarAndCoffee · 24/02/2022 16:31

Do whatever makes you feel most comfortable

forcedfun · 24/02/2022 16:31

are these actually real people starting all these threads?

wonderstuff · 24/02/2022 16:33

We are one of the safest countries on earth. Last successful invasion of mainland UK was 1066.
Things might start getting expensive as oil prices rise, there may be cyber attacks, but there will not be a war on UK soil anytime soon.

BestKnitterInScotland · 24/02/2022 16:34

@tiredanddangerous

Exactly this.

I read a very good book before Christmas called "The life-changing art of not giving a fuck".

It's not about not caring. It's recognising that on a personal level you cannot affect what is happening and have no control over it. So it's not worth giving a fuck about it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/02/2022 16:36

@Justkeeppedaling

I'm not. I'm not terrified of anything that is beyond my control.
Roussette · 24/02/2022 16:37

You are thinking of leaving the UK now because of what's happened overnight? Is this a serious post, because you're barmy.

OF COURSE what is happening with Russia/Ukraine is totally awful, and I'm watching it closely, but you thinking of leaving your home to live in Africa, within hours of Putin invading a country is batshit

Mybestyear · 24/02/2022 16:39

YANU to be terrified of was - but not sure being in Africa will protect you from Armageddon. I really think Putin has lost the plot but also lost a lot of support in Russia/from senior Russians. I think the Russian people themselves will bring about his downfall. He's said to have become obsessed about Gaddafi and his death (by his own people/rebel fighters), watching videos of the torture and death. Perhaps he was envisioning such an end for himself?

Nidan2Sandan · 24/02/2022 16:42

Did you panic like this for Crimea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria?

Staffy1 · 24/02/2022 16:45

@Chikapu

It’s not so much the nuclear threat that terrifies me, at least not the case of being killed instantly, a slow radiation death is horrifying, but I don’t think they will be used except as a last resort as no one wins with them. But just the thought of another world war and having to go through severe shortages and bombings for who knows how many years. We all saw how greedy and selfish people could be with covid, can you imagine those sort of shortages of everything, not just toilet rolls, for years on end.
MacaroniBaloney · 24/02/2022 16:48

The big worry is how conflict in the Ukraine will impact our gas supply any prices tbh. That's a more realistic impact than learning how to use a gun or conscription.

MakeUsACuppa · 24/02/2022 16:54

Putin is clearly a megalomaniac, what will be will be I can't do anything about it. When and if I can, I will, although I doubt I can do much.

We live in different times now, there is so much information (and misinformation) out there hopefully someone close to Putin will visit a cathedral and take him out!

I will not panic, although I did fill my car with fuel and bought some more candles, both of which I needed. But as for leaving the country, buns to that, I'm going to the pub tonight with friends, probably the safest place Wink

MonStylo · 24/02/2022 16:57

Where the people going nuts about this on Mumsnet today alive (or older than a young child) in 1991? It was way more scary then, I was terrified by “When the wild blows”. Still here though.
