DH called into our local chippy after work tonight, kindly bought me a bag of chips... yet no scraps (batter!).

He NEVER asks for scraps or claims they never have any...i mean is it even worth having chips without scraps on the top??

Aibu to LTB?

So as not to dripfeed... DH does not have scraps, salt nor vinegar on his chips...

A genuine question for the northerners. When you have gravy on your chips do you have salt and vinegar too? I’ve never had it but I would imagine it’s nice, only the same as roast potatoes and gravy really. I can’t imagine having vinegar though. Salt yes, but not vinegar.

@Lizzy1980 I’m not far from Woeley Castle yay Grin

I do yes ,I also like gravy soaking into my battered fish or sometimes curry sauce 🤣
SallyAnn32 · 24/02/2022 08:20

When the salt and vinegar coated scraps stick to the butter on your bread 🤤

Yes, salt, vinegar and gravy on chips. I don’t really like gravy near fish though. Would probably go for a steak & kidney pudding (not pie) if I was having chips and gravy.

Hell yes, salt and vinegar is a necessary requirement. Chippy gravy isn't really the same as normal gravy, can't explain why though.

@JayAlfredPrufrock

This is why I feel sorry for Southerners.
I feel sorry for Northerners eating everything covered in vile gravy and thinking it's normal
x2boys · 24/02/2022 09:18

You don't know what your missing @mydogisthebest ,you really need to try a chip barm and gravy 🤣

I loathe gravy (thankfully so does DH) and don't ever eat it.

I want my food to taste of itself plus I do not want it soggy. Gravy on crisp foods like chips, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding etc is just plain silly unless you have no teeth

x2boys · 24/02/2022 09:27

Ah well people have different tastes
But just because you dont like gravy doesn't mean it's silly .

monkeysox · 24/02/2022 09:36

@Lizzy1980 I'd just have salt with gravy but my dh has vinegar too.
Tbh he has curry sauce with his fish and chips so he's even stranger.
I don't like dry food. Even steak and chips needs peppercorn sauce.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/02/2022 09:38

I don’t like gravy.

Garlic sauce with fish and chips is also delicious 😁

pawpaws2022 · 24/02/2022 09:56

I like to have gravy on the side, or Irish curry sauce depending on my mood!

BashfulClam · 24/02/2022 10:17

Never had them, I live in Scotland and never heard anyone ask for them 🤷🏻‍♀️

ArticSaviour · 24/02/2022 10:18

In my old school the end of every half term was Chips and Scraps day for staff.

My preferred order is either fish, chips and scraps with a pineapple fritter, or a fish and chip butty. Lots of salt and vinegar. No sauce

longwayoff · 24/02/2022 10:26

Memories. Used to love a greasy helping of crackling as we called it in my childhood, couldn't eat it now. Saw on tv that KFC 'gravy' is made by scraping the dropped off batter bits out of the fryer, adding some liquid, boiling it up and calling it gravy 🤢 apparently its very popular.

gogohm · 24/02/2022 10:28

Never heard of scraps, surely you have fish or a battered sausage to get your batter fix. Not having salt or vinegar is bad though

Ffsmakeitstop · 24/02/2022 10:43

I always ask for a bag of scraps, Leeds so a proper northerner. Don't like gravy on chips and salt first then vinegar and then salt again just in case it's rinsed off. DH always asks if I'd like chips with the salt.

FiveShelties · 24/02/2022 10:51

Born and bred in Lancashire and never heard of scraps. Worse still I now live in NZ and they don't have vinegar on their chips! It is impossible to find a vinegar bottle here, really sad.

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 24/02/2022 11:16

Scraps are a regional thing, definitely not a thing where I'm from

Dixiechickonhols · 24/02/2022 12:47

Not a big chippy gravy fan but yes people would usually have salt & vinegar plus gravy. Pie or pudding chips & gravy is a very normal chippy meal up here. Our chippy does rag pudding aswell as usual Holland’s type.

Bleugh... don't do dry food.

Blueuggboots · 24/02/2022 12:57

Golden chips are a bit of thing around here.....battered chips.....StarStarStar

x2boys · 24/02/2022 12:58

If people have never heard of scraps ,Pea wet will blow your mind 😂
