To think he should ask for scraps?,

Mammyloveswine · 23/02/2022 21:16

DH called into our local chippy after work tonight, kindly bought me a bag of chips... yet no scraps (batter!).

He NEVER asks for scraps or claims they never have any...i mean is it even worth having chips without scraps on the top??

Aibu to LTB?

So as not to dripfeed... DH does not have scraps, salt nor vinegar on his chips...

We called the batter bits left in the fryer "crackling " in 80s London Smile.
Chips with cracklings on top .

I mean if I was ordering boiled rice I would think actually fuck it, I'll microwave some as it's cheaper

Who thinks I know, boiled rice is better than fried?
I asked my dad if he would ask for scraps in the chippy and he looked at me like I had two heads and said "obviously" in a very... Snape tone

MajesticallyAwkward · 25/02/2022 08:36

@Mammyloveswine omlette and no chips?! File for that divorce immediately!

Usually I'd say chippy and Chinese in the same week was an epic food week, but my goodness you've been let down 😂

There was a time, I think I was possibly pregnant and emotional, our Chinese order came and they'd forgot my chips! DH grabbed his car keys and went to the nearest takeaway for chips 😁

mydogisthebest · 25/02/2022 09:17

We are staying in Birmingham this week and every evening we have been for a curry. Can't get over how just about everyone, but us, has chips with their curry and then dips the chips in it!

Northerners sure do have some strange eating habits

Begs the question - Why wouldn’t you dip chips in your curry? No different to getting curry sauce at the chippy or from maccies and dipping chips in it.

You southerners are a far stranger bunch Grin

longwayoff · 25/02/2022 09:42

A well made steamed steak and kidney suet pudding is a thing of beauty. Gravy is inside it. Probably nobody under 50 can make one.

What do southerners have against moisture? Gravy, curry, any kind of sauce enhances the chip experience. I really feel like the south is missing out on a taste sensation.
Dixiechickonhols · 25/02/2022 10:14

I had no idea steak & kidney pudding wasn’t a thing down south. Chippies sell it and lots of pubs here would have on menu - you can buy from butchers too.
They are easy to make bbc good food has a decent recipe (you can do in slowcooker rather than steam over pan) I’m not that far off 50 though!

Ipadflowers · 25/02/2022 10:17

I used to work in a chippy and the thought of eating the shit dredges from the deep fat fryer like this turns my stomach, it’s totally grim.

bitemyarsenic · 25/02/2022 10:25

@miltonj

Think the southerners don't understand the chip shop gravy isn't like the gravy you'd have on a roast. It's very thick and rich and it comes in a tub. My chippy people travel from miles around just to get tubs of the gravy to have with their tea!
I think its very different generally. Southerners go for fish and chips mainly.

We dont buy just chips/ gravy/ scraps as a meal or so frequently.
Fish and chips is a once a month treat for us.

I go for crispy chips with a fluffy inside not a grim soggy mess.
Mmm lots of seasalt, no vinegar, gravy or pea wet what ever that is Envy

x2boys · 25/02/2022 10:37

I can only speak for myself as a northerner but fish and chips isn't a regular meal in this house either I had it for lunch as a treat a few weeks ago and the time before that was at Blackpool in the summer
And this is gonna blow your mind @bitemyarsenic ,but we actually have takeaways and restaurants in the northwest that sell all manner of takeaway food 😂

x2boys · 25/02/2022 10:40

Pea wet is exactly what it says it is the wet from mushy peas I don't like it but different people have different tastes .

x2boys · 25/02/2022 10:45

Because you suggested southerners have fish and chips as a treat
Do you think Northernersgo to the chippy all the time ?

JellybabyGina87 · 25/02/2022 11:12

I live in Liverpool. I've heard of them but as something that my mum used to get when she was a kid in the 1960s, I've never heard of anyone getting them now.

When I lived up north they did. Chippy tea every friday was usually chips/ gravy/ battered sausage/ pie or chips bought to go with supermarket pizza to soak up booze rather than actual fish and chips.
x2boys · 25/02/2022 15:20

Up north is a huge place and your making massive generalisation ,I don't assume that every southerner eats at pie and mash places or eat jellied eels ,so it's rather ignorant to assume every northerner drinks to much booze and has a chippy tea every Friday .

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2022 15:41

he Black Country Museum has a 1930’s chip shop where they cook the chips in either beef dripping or lard. Never tried them but there’s always a big queue

Come to Yorkshire, nearly all chip shops use beef dripping, it makes the best fish and chips by far. Non Yorkshire fish and chips are disappointing and lacking in something because they fry in something that is not beef dripping, also if fish other than haddock is used.

@JellybabyGina87 is it still the case that in Liverpool a lot of fish and chip shops are run by people of Chinese heritage, so you can get fish, chip and Chinese food all at the same time?

DP was working there once and his mate arrived with a pot of noodles with a side of chips and this became his lunch there just about every day (most Chinese takeaways round here only open in the evening).

mydogisthebest · 25/02/2022 19:07

@JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam no way do chips go with curry. You have a curry and rice and maybe bread. When did chips ever enter the picture?

No one I know thinks chips go with curry and would never in a million years have chips and curry sauce from a chip shop.

@MajesticallyAwkward why are northerners not capable of eating food without pouring something wet all over it?

Gravy certainly does not enhance any food. As I have already asked, why on earth do you feel the need to make crisp foods soggy? It's like you all want to eat baby food.

Southerners are not missing out on anything except soggy disgusting food.

Why not just eat chips? Why have to smother them in gravy/cheese/
curry etc?

Sorry but beef dripping does NOT make the best chips. It makes vile disgusting chips that should be thrown in the bin.

Why would you want chips or fish to taste of beef dripping? Also what if you are vegetarian?

Now this southern/northern banter started lighthearted but you seem to be getting a bit snide with your replies now.

Have you ever tried any of these things or are you just declaring them to be disgusting because you think they might be?

In answer to why not just eat chips-in my opinion they’re pretty bland on their own. I also won’t speak for others but I do enjoy crispy food, but there’s nothing wrong with soggy food either…I assume you eat yoghurts?

You come across as a snob.
