What are your views on a drag queen visiting a primary school for the day? Think thigh high leather boots with short revealing dresses and a dance show. The drag queen spent the day at school. Did a show for KS2 and then went around to individual classes to read a story book. The school had a themed dress up day. The theme was This is Me. Parents were not informed that this would be happening and were not given the option to opt in or out of the experience. The school has a very diverse mix of cultures and religions. This particular queen is easily found online, the kids were told their stage name and their content is rather steamy.

YANBU- It’s inappropriate
YABU- It’s appropriate

I have name changed for this.

I like drag and it definitely isn't a kink (that's a whole other thing) but it's wholly inappropriate for schools.

Bloodyshittystorms · 23/02/2022 13:32

What's a Pantomime Dame if not a drag queen? Doesn't stop me taking my kids to a Panto. I wouldn't bother me at all.

Veiaola · 23/02/2022 13:32

I presume I have taken ur child to a panto. There is always a Dame at the panto.
I think in the horrible world we currently live in I think it was a nice thing the school did. I think you need to give ur head a wobble op.

beastlyslumber · 23/02/2022 13:32

It's grotesque, and it's insulting to the girls.

I always found drag queens to be disturbing, as a young girl, but couldn't quite articulate why. It's awful to think of young girls forced to celebrate someone acting out 'womanhood' in such a spiteful and untrue way.

One of the things that makes the world horrible is misogyny.
puffyisgood · 23/02/2022 13:34

In my experience, schools & teachers are pretty good at knowing what is & isn't appropriate for children.

I don't by any means hate DQ's, but I agree with those comments who note the disproportionate airtime given to biological males encroaching onto traditionally female territory.

MinnieMountain · 23/02/2022 13:35

I’m a school governor and I have a DS in a different school. I’d be asking the Chair to call a meeting with the HT so they can explain why they thought it was appropriate (and to deal with the many complaints I would expect to receive).

LadyRoughDiamond · 23/02/2022 13:37

I would find this completely inappropriate. Blackface and yellowface are deemed inappropriate - it’s time that womanface was as well. I may be generalising here, but I find that drag depicts a crude, overly-sexualised version of womanhood that is both offensive and misogynistic.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/02/2022 13:37

@DorothyZbornakIsAQueen

This obsession with breaking down children's boundaries is bizarre and dangerous.
This. A thousand times over.

I find it interesting that a theme such as "This is Me" involves a drag act and not, for example, a disabled person. But hey, not glamorous or fun enough I guess.

I read that Ant and Dec have recently camped it up in drag for their show as they feel we don't get to see and celebrate drag and differences.

From where I'm sat we can't move without bloody drag being rammed in our faces.

I love panto, but a pantomime dame is a different aesthetic, even without the act itself. They have a different style of dress and makeup, as well as a different character. They are not supposed to look like women, even cartoony OTT women. They are supposed to look like men who could never pass for women in a million years.

Just wow ! I can’t stand drag queens and I would be fuming if this was my child’s school.

Casheeeew · 23/02/2022 13:39

I love Rupaul. Love it. I've been to drag bingo a few times. I wouldn't let kids watch Rupaul nor have a drag act at their school.

It's 15+ age entertainment imo.

You're an adult.

It's fine for you to love it, DQs are adult entertainment after all.

Casheeeew · 23/02/2022 13:43

Re-read Op. It's too hard to believe. I'm guessing the DQ invited is actually child friendly performer and OP is just trying to stir the pot.

rolypolydoly · 23/02/2022 13:43

Someone posted the OP on Twitter already

SamphiretheStickerist · 23/02/2022 13:43

What are you actually complaining against though?

Bandwagoning

Lazy, box ticking, inclusivity

Sexism

Outdated, crude, misogynistic, grotesque parody of women

Inevitable contents of the act's SM

The probable lack of safeguarding checking re. that SM stream

Lack of communication with parents for something that is, at best, an unusual choice.

The acknowledged push to remove certain barriers that lies behind the recent upsurge in hyper sexualised 'treat's' for children

But mostly why? Just why? Why a drag artist when there are so very many interesting and less unecessary 'Me's' out there?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/02/2022 13:44

Yanbu! On what so called educational grounds was that even for?

Diversity and inclusion no doubt - utterly noble concepts in themselves, but unfortunately a handy target for some with less than honourable motives to exploit

georgarina · 23/02/2022 13:44

That's like inviting a burlesque act to a primary school. WTF.

Foolsrule · 23/02/2022 13:45

I’d be complaining long and loud. Drag is nothing but misogynistic bullshit! What kind of message does it give to the girls?

Lennyllama · 23/02/2022 13:46

@Casheeeew I guarantee this is going to be in the news soon. Once the name of the performer gets out you will soon find out how wrong you are. This DQ is known for their burlesque performances and is very far from being child friendly.

If you cannot see that anything that is hyper sexualised has no place in a Primary School then you are part of the problem.

Honestly, open your eyes and your mind and choose to be part of the solution!

Quite recently the Twitter account of Drag Queen Story Hour had to lock down a Tweet with a pro-pedophilia message. The tweet contained a photo of a smiling man wearing a rainbow suit and wielding a rainbow umbrella with the phrase “Love has no age!”. This is a slogan regularly trumped by people pushing to lower ages of consent. Google the slogan and Minor Attracted Persons. Quite horrifying.

Also Desmond is Amazing. Another drag star but a child.
