What are your views on a drag queen visiting a primary school for the day? Think thigh high leather boots with short revealing dresses and a dance show. The drag queen spent the day at school. Did a show for KS2 and then went around to individual classes to read a story book. The school had a themed dress up day. The theme was This is Me. Parents were not informed that this would be happening and were not given the option to opt in or out of the experience. The school has a very diverse mix of cultures and religions. This particular queen is easily found online, the kids were told their stage name and their content is rather steamy.

YANBU- It’s inappropriate
YABU- It’s appropriate

I have name changed for this.

It's adult entertainment at best.

It's an over sexualised parody of being a woman which has no place in childrens lives.

nanbread · 23/02/2022 11:49

No issue with drag queens (although it does feel like an incredibly lazy/unoriginal way to discuss individuality) but I would have an issue with sexual content / clothing for that age.

VaddaABeetch · 23/02/2022 11:49

I’d ask why if the answer is diversity I’d ask when are they showing a lesbian farmer or a gay PE teacher.

I've taken my DC to drag queen story time many years ago, and the queen then was wearing a more princess style ballgown and reading age appropriate stories about inclusivity. It was fun.

DappledThings · 23/02/2022 11:51

I'd be furious and wanting an explanation of why they thought it was at all appropriate. The no advanced warning is very suspicious.

I got an email just today to tell us a local author is visiting the school soon with her latest book which deals with grief and loss. They wanted all parents to know these big themes would be being discussed and it is quite right they did. I strongly suspect any school which had a drag queen in and didn't announce it prior did so because they were well aware how contraversial it is. Which is appalling.

Parpophone · 23/02/2022 11:51

@Lockheart

Why have you name changed for this?
I would imagine because drag queens in schools are not an everyday occurence and that this post could be potentially outing by narrowing it down to one school.

Any other parent/teacher from that particular school who is reading this might decide to be very nosy and AS the OP to see if they can work out who they are.

Why is this even a question?

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 23/02/2022 11:52

Awful. Can't think of any reason that this is ok.

nearlyspringyay · 23/02/2022 11:52

On the app so can't vote but how fucking ridiculous. Is the school involved with stonewall?

nanbread · 23/02/2022 11:53

@Ionlydomassiveones

I would make a formal complaint through the school’s complaints procedure (should be on their website). This will get reported to the governing body - or should do - so questions will be asked of senior leaders and their judgement. Tell other parents what you’ve done so that might encourage others.
What are you actually complaining against though?

Short skirts?

BearOfEasttown · 23/02/2022 11:55

YANBU. I HATE drag queens. So outdated and sexist.

Lockheart · 23/02/2022 11:55

@Parpophone because it's a tad suspicious when a poster "namechanges" to create a thread on a notoriously froth-inducing topic which has already been done to death on MN and which I could predict the responses to almost verbatim.

You'll have to forgive me for thinking their motives may not be entirely pure.

buddylicious · 23/02/2022 11:55

@partystress

YANBU. I would be complaining to governors, local authority and my MP. This shit has got to stop. It’s completely inappropriate in any school setting, let alone a primary, and it is alarming that the school leadership is not aware of that or carried out basic diligence on who they are letting into the school.

And OFSTED too!

Eightiesfan · 23/02/2022 11:56

When you say thighs high boots, skimpy clothes and risqué content is this what you’ve seen online or what you know DQ was wearing when visiting school?

Would I very surprised if this was allowed. I am all for inclusivity and diversity, so I would have no issue with DQ visiting, but I do find it hard to believe the school would allow an x-rated performance!

hellsbells99 · 23/02/2022 11:56

I would complain to the governors that this is misappropriation. Why are they promoting men dressing up as women and ridiculing them

Stressedout1009 · 23/02/2022 11:58

I'm on a fb group where the op or someone else from the school posted this exact same issue so I believe it is true. The op there provided pictures of the drag queen and what actually happened and I was horrified that this was allowed at school. I'm pretty sure alot of parents will be taking action at that school.

HeyMoana · 23/02/2022 11:59

I wouldn't have as issue. I'd use it as an opportunity to discuss with my daughter why I didn't particularly like drag ....but it does exist and so I don't ever think pretending something doesn't, is the right thing to do.
I'm presuming that those who didn't want their children to experience a man in drag, don't take them to panto.

Lockheart · 23/02/2022 12:00

@Stressedout1009 oh well if it's been posted in two places on the internet then it must be true!

Seriously though, TRAs are known to wind up MN for screenshots. Don't give them fodder.

DiscoBadgers · 23/02/2022 12:01

Are you also against pantomimes and Mr Tumble…..?

DogsAndGin · 23/02/2022 12:03

Completely inappropriate! A drag Queen is a fetishised, over-sexualised, derogatory portrayal of femininity. How is it helpful for little girls and boys to learn about femininity in such a confusing and over-sexed way!? It is not connected to freedom of gender. A man can dress like a woman, no problem with that, but to suggest that a drag Queen is a normal, healthy portrayal of a woman, is sick.

I’m furious on your behalf. They’re waaaaay off with this, I would formally complain to the local authority and ask for a full investigation into the content your child was exposed to. Ffs they’re sent to school to learn! What lesson did this sex show replace I wonder?!

musicalfrog · 23/02/2022 12:03

@Chely

Wouldn't care so long as they were using appropriate language for the age group. Young ones watch that Justin fella, he dresses up as all sorts.
I've never seen him with massive lips and fishnets though (thank god!)
DomesticatedZombie · 23/02/2022 12:05

Unacceptable. I agree that going to the press is something to consider.

Lennyllama · 23/02/2022 12:05

I agree with you all. I’m so angry!

@Lockheart @Parpophone explained my reasons perfectly. I have posted about my DC before and said what year group they are in, I’d like to stay anonymous. I’m just a concerned parent on an anonymous forum looking for advice. This really happened yesterday. The DQ has posted about it on their social media. It’s a picture of them standing in front of the school with the name of the school clearly visible. If this does go to the press all will be revealed soon.

JLSal · 23/02/2022 12:06

It doesn’t make sense in the context of a day about ‘this is me’. It’s the drag queen’s job to dress up like that - a performance

DomesticatedZombie · 23/02/2022 12:07

Kitty Demure on drag for kids.
