What are your views on a drag queen visiting a primary school for the day? Think thigh high leather boots with short revealing dresses and a dance show. The drag queen spent the day at school. Did a show for KS2 and then went around to individual classes to read a story book. The school had a themed dress up day. The theme was This is Me. Parents were not informed that this would be happening and were not given the option to opt in or out of the experience. The school has a very diverse mix of cultures and religions. This particular queen is easily found online, the kids were told their stage name and their content is rather steamy.

YANBU- It’s inappropriate
YABU- It’s appropriate

I have name changed for this.

Another parent contacted the Safe Schools Alliance about this and has given permission for me to share some of what they said to them about all of this. This is from their email:

*We find it incredibly concerning what you have said about the performers online presence. This suggests a lack of due diligence on the schools part and is a safeguarding concern. If the school have exposed the children to an individual that they will encounter explicit material on googling, they have a lot of explaining to do.

It is not homophobic in the slightest to complain about children being exposed to inappropriate sexualised content. We speak to many gay men who are as concerned about this undermining of safeguarding as we are. They certainly do not want this done in their name. We would suggest that is in fact homophobic if the school claim that this is being done in the name of ‘gay rights’, the majority of gay people are not in favour of undermining child safeguarding and exposing children to inappropriate and explicit content. They are horrified at this being done in their name. This reduces, not increases public acceptance.

It would potentially also be worth contacting your MP/MSPs and/or the press regarding this matter.

The school have a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to protect children from explicit online content. They also have a responsibility to ensure all adults entering the school are suitable people. Adults who work with children should not be dressed in a sexually explicit manner.*

@KewMummy87 thank you for sharing that. The school has yet to address this with the current parents. It would be so interesting to hear what they had to say!

Wow. That’s a powerful message. And something you can use yourself when you contact the LA.

Jijithecat · 24/02/2022 17:29

@Bintymcbintface

I think it fits the "I am me" theme well. I'm sure there are many boys who want to wear dresses and sparkly things, not because they want to be girls or are having an identity crisis but because they think it would be fun or silly, but think they can't because "it's for girls" and there was a male doing just that and answering questions about it.

Who knows maybe today there was a woman in overalls talking about being a mechanic and showing kids different car parts or something?

It's sad that a gross stereotype of cross dressing/drag has turned what was probably quite a fun day into this horrible thread with gross implications and negative views

I saw a boy on the school run only yesterday rocking a Wonder Woman outfit and we haven't had DQ story time in our school. When we go to the play centre there are as many boys wearing female character dress up outfits as girls and vice versa. There are plenty of primary aged children who feel empowered to dress how they like without DQ'S going into school.
TheUsualShitshow · 24/02/2022 17:32

Haha @wingscrow literally this whole thread is women going 'we have a problem with drag' not sure why you felt the need to appear and drag the truth from us Grin

Bintymcbintface · 24/02/2022 17:32

Their website doesn't have any explicit material, perhaps some puns but that's about it and the outfits featured on there aren't really revealing either, a lot of cheesy 80s style aerobics gear

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 24/02/2022 17:36

I can tell you that this violence never came from a drag queen or a transgender woman

Lucky you. Are you claiming that no one ever had violence aimed against them by these two male groups.

I've got news for you.

Bintymcbintface · 24/02/2022 17:37

This is what you see when you Google image this DQ, a whole lot of busy lizzy style leotards... And oddly enough granny style shopping trolleys

You either missed the cabaret page or think that nipple tassels, stockings and suspenders are everyday wear.

This!!!

This whole thread is infuriating me.

Is this what we aspire for our kids? That ‘this is me’ is reduced to what we wear. How we do our makeup.

Christ are we not trying to teach our kids the opposite?

Bintymcbintface · 24/02/2022 17:40

Here's what you get if you Google little mix... If anyone would like to point out the difference other than gender and the colours please feel free

Mistressiggi · 24/02/2022 17:43

@Bintymcbintface

So someone that wears skin tight lycra like an athlete would be perfectly alright. But a drag performer in the same thing with sparkly mesh over the top of it isn't?
It would be very unusual for an athlete to come into school still wearing their Lycra! Why would they do that? I do think tight lyrics shorts would be inappropriate in a school, yes. Any staff member who cycles to school, for example, wouldn't stay in the gear in class.

Does it matter what a man is wearing when he abuses a woman? Is that really what you're on here saying?
KewMummy87 · 24/02/2022 17:44

@Lennyllama apparently they were polite but said lots of parents had contacted them to say how positive they thought it was.

If my school did this I would be absolutely furious. Beyond furious. I would question the ethos of the school and the wisdom of the head.

Bintymcbintface · 24/02/2022 17:45

I didn't scroll down far enough and yeah there were indeed nipple tassels. Don't at all class that as every day wear but still not really what I'd call explicit. Risqué and not something I'd advertise to kids but even so, hardly the xxx shit people seem to think this is

Mistressiggi · 24/02/2022 17:45

Littlemix would not wear any of those outfits on a visit to a primary school!
Some seem to be missing the point that we don't need a good reason to exclude someone from speaking to a group of primary school children; we need a good reason to allow them to.

Little Mix are not going into school to promote inclusiveness and ‘this is me’.

Also I’m going to bet that if they did they would have the bloody sense to dress ‘down’ a bit.

TheUsualShitshow · 24/02/2022 17:50

Looks pretty standard clothing to me.

Yep - they know when one should turn up in one’s pants and suspenders and when one should not!
WorriedMumsDontSleep · 24/02/2022 17:54

Nope, just pointing out that just because wingscrow's aggressors were not trans or dq etc doesn't mean no women have ever been the victim of one.

It is a stupid comment.
