What are your views on a drag queen visiting a primary school for the day? Think thigh high leather boots with short revealing dresses and a dance show. The drag queen spent the day at school. Did a show for KS2 and then went around to individual classes to read a story book. The school had a themed dress up day. The theme was This is Me. Parents were not informed that this would be happening and were not given the option to opt in or out of the experience. The school has a very diverse mix of cultures and religions. This particular queen is easily found online, the kids were told their stage name and their content is rather steamy.

They're not mocking women, for the most part they're mocking other men whilst dressed as a woman... Playing a character

Seriouslymole · 23/02/2022 17:14

@Redburnett

I suggest complaining to Governors formally.
This. I would be beyond livid at this.
Seraphinesupport · 23/02/2022 17:14

i wouldnt be happy about it because they wouldnt allow a woman to come and do a show in front of children dressed like that so why allow a man?

DomesticatedZombie · 23/02/2022 17:15

An article here interviewing 'flowjob'. The thing is that I agree with flowjob - the council scapegoated them. And flowjob should not have been exposed to the inevitable backlash - that's also the fault of the people who hired them.

The problem is not the drag queen, the problem is the school and people who ought to have a good awareness of the safeguarding and stereotyping issues involved who decided it was a good idea to bring in a drag queen to speak to primary school children.

And while some pictures have been deleted, many remain up on flowjob's social media that discuss violence, drugs, drink, sex, etc. This is not a 'character' one brings into a school.

I see the head responsible no longer works at the school.

OnceUponAWhine · 23/02/2022 17:15

A performer wouldn't be expected to follow those rules

Ah well then, by that measurement, the children can look forward to a future visit from the Magic Mike cast…without asking the parents first, of course and because they will just be reading a story, not performing in any way.

Skellisfeathers · 23/02/2022 17:15

@partystress

YANBU. I would be complaining to governors, local authority and my MP. This shit has got to stop. It’s completely inappropriate in any school setting, let alone a primary, and it is alarming that the school leadership is not aware of that or carried out basic diligence on who they are letting into the school.
This!
ThatsNotMyGolem · 23/02/2022 17:16

Im hoping my kids will be okay as we live in small town. Thw city is where all the broken people with no famlies end up.. Trying to look for new family.

@Lyonic this is an utterly bizarre thing to say. In my experience, the most batshit people live in small towns.

Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 17:16

Oh come on there's a difference between a mostly naked man and a man in a dress

ThatsNotMyGolem · 23/02/2022 17:16

that first paragraph should be bold - not my views!!

Wonnle · 23/02/2022 17:17

These drag acts look more like clowns from a circus to me

FairyCakeWings · 23/02/2022 17:22

It doesn’t even make sense to have a drag Queen give out a positive ‘This Is Me’ message.

Surely the whole point of This Is Me should be that this is me, unaltered, accepting who I am because we are all good enough exactly as we are and we don’t need to change ourselves to be accepted for what we are.

Sending in someone who looks nothing like themselves because they are so heavily made up, wearing a wig and extravagant clothing that no one would wear day to day and then expecting children to believe that that’s really who they are gives the exact opposite message that it’s supposed to.

OnceUponAWhine · 23/02/2022 17:23

@Bintymcbintface

Oh come on there's a difference between a mostly naked man and a man in a dress
Adult entertainment. You said as performers they wouldn’t have to comply with a dress code, as the school staff do, in a school setting?

So, would you expect the school to ask for your parental consent for the Magic Mike cast to visit your primary-aged child’s classroom ‘in costume’ and read them a story?

Jijithecat · 23/02/2022 17:25

@Bintymcbintface

Mrs Brown Widow Twanky Lilly Savage May McFetridge Dame Edna

I truly think a lot of the outrage here is coming from some ridiculous fear that women are being "erased" and a man in a dress has spooked that part. The OP didn't say that the performance was in any way sexual, nor was the outfit worn by the DQ offensive or revealing. No children and teachers couldn't wear it because uniform and professional dress. A performer wouldn't be expected to follow those rules

But it never is Widow Twanky story time is it, which in the context of story time would actually make much more sense. As for mentioning Mrs Brown, you clearly don't come on Mumsnet very much. I've never seen anyone post anything positive about that programme.
Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 17:28

When a costume is a pair of boxers, yip. Drag isn't exclusively adult entertainment, a bunch of strippers however...

MangyInseam · 23/02/2022 17:28

I mean, Mrs Brown, even if you like the show, wouldn't really be appropriate either, would it?

Lots of things aren't appropriate for kids. Like we don't have "Dexter" storytime, even though really it's just an actor.

Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 17:29

That's because it's a shit TV show, not because brendan is dressed as a woman

DearlyBeloathed · 23/02/2022 17:30

In my experience, the most batshit people live in small towns

And your point was proven.

mummykel16 · 23/02/2022 17:31

@Bintymcbintface

Where's the safeguarding problem?! My good god yall are nuts
No, that would be you
Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 17:35

Why is it nuts to say that a man in a dress vetted by a primary school isn't putting kids at risk doing an age appropriate show for them?

FairyCakeWings · 23/02/2022 17:36

Because he’s giving them a message that isn’t healthy for them.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 23/02/2022 17:37

Totally inappropriate

SoupDragon · 23/02/2022 17:37

The OP didn't say that the performance was in any way sexual, nor was the outfit worn by the DQ offensive or revealing.

You looked at the picture, right?

SoupDragon · 23/02/2022 17:39

I don't have a problem with drag as such (I'm still very much on the fence about it) but that outfit is wholly inappropriate for primary school

Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 17:39

What was the message that performer portrayed? As far as I was aware it was about being yourself and proud of it...

Furries · 23/02/2022 17:39

As usual, the same phrases and faux naivety trotted out time and time again. Jeez, it gets so boring.
