What are your views on a drag queen visiting a primary school for the day? Think thigh high leather boots with short revealing dresses and a dance show. The drag queen spent the day at school. Did a show for KS2 and then went around to individual classes to read a story book. The school had a themed dress up day. The theme was This is Me. Parents were not informed that this would be happening and were not given the option to opt in or out of the experience. The school has a very diverse mix of cultures and religions. This particular queen is easily found online, the kids were told their stage name and their content is rather steamy.

YANBU- It’s inappropriate

I have name changed for this.

I always think this, it’s exactly the same as blocking up!

Sexnotgender · 23/02/2022 14:47

It’s WILDLY inappropriate.

RowanAlong · 23/02/2022 14:48

Way too adult. I’d be complaining straight away!

3peassuit · 23/02/2022 14:51

Presumably this costs money at a time of budget cuts. Where did they get the money for this? Outrageous.

jessycake · 23/02/2022 14:52

I grew up watching Danny la Rue and Hinge and Bracket , and later Lily Savage, Including the risque jokes that I didn't fully understand, and of course in Pantomime . It doesn't seem right to go into primary school , it feels like it crosses a boundry.

ChangedForThisJustBecause · 23/02/2022 14:54

I've NC because this is an issue that could get me into trouble at work if I'm recognised in real life Sad

My DC also know 2 drag queens through social events, and neither of them (the DQ's) think this kind of thing is appropriate.

This is really worrying. Drag is something that isn't mainstream in the sense that word is being used in by the OPs school. It's people being 'themselves', yes, but that's totally inappropriate for a primary school setting Angry

The world is going mad. Unisex toilets in the west end that affects the women more than the men, and now this? DQ's dressing in totally inappropriate clothes which show their genitalia (aren't all DQ's supposed to tuck it all away? If they're any good? I've watched Ru Paul and quite enjoy it, but the tucking thing is a big part of that isn't it?)

This is really scary that my DGC are going to be exposed to this kind othing in their early primary years. It's not appropriate and I don't care what anyone says different to that. Angry

Lennyllama · 23/02/2022 14:54

@3peassuit I have been told it came from the parent fund. We pay a small monthly contribution to the school that they use to fund enriching experiences. So we weren’t told about it but apparently we paid for it.

Thing is, a Pantomime Dame is one thing, and probably appropriate in the context of story telling.

But if the drag queen used their professional name and the older kids looked up the profile, what's the likelihood of it all being innocent and fairy tale?
Most aren't

Sounds like you all have an excellent lever for registering your disapproval then!

CIaireFraser · 23/02/2022 14:58

@Waxonwaxoff0

Probably in the minority but I wouldn't care. Unless they were making explicit sexual jokes.
Names like FloJob Queen and Miss Tesstickle are pretty sexually explicit imo.

Also if a child were to look up the DQ online when they got home I'm sure they'd what they'd find wouldn't exactly be appropriate for children. These are adult entertainers, after all.

Inappropriate, unnecessary, disgusting.

Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 15:05

@Phobiaphobic

If anyone is in any doubt that drag is misogyny, ask yourself where are the women routinely dressing up as grotesque caricatures of men in our culture?

I'll wait.

Kathy Burke in Kevin and Perry. Took 2 seconds for that one to pop into my head, I'm sure if I wasted more brain time on this ridiculousness I could think of more
Sofiegiraffe · 23/02/2022 15:07

Highly inappropriate. I'd be complaining too.

dizzydizzydizzy · 23/02/2022 15:09

@nanbread

No issue with drag queens (although it does feel like an incredibly lazy/unoriginal way to discuss individuality) but I would have an issue with sexual content / clothing for that age.
Pretty much agree with this.

I think it is a very strange thing to do but I wouldn't be upset or angry.

OnceUponAWhine · 23/02/2022 15:11

Are you in Scotland, OP? Or no worries you don’t want to say, it’s just this has happened in Scotland before. Endorsed by the local MSP who accompanied the performer for the story reading. Parents were not made aware of the session beforehand, the school did not seek the permission of parent/carers for an adult entertainer to be present within a school setting.

Mayorhumdinger19 · 23/02/2022 15:13

I don't even know where to start....I honestly cannot compute. Please stop the world......

Bintymcbintface · 23/02/2022 15:15

My word people here really are very close minded and uppity. I presume none of you have ever taken your DC to pantomimes etc that grotesque widow twanky being a horrible parody of a woman and all that. Drag isn't exclusively "adult entertainment" and the clothing wasn't particularly offensive, if they'd had giant boobs hanging out and a massive strap on then yeah I'd be pissed off. Besides that it's highly unlikely that a paid performer going into a primary school would be doing an explicit act unless they're complete idiots. Get the bees out of your bonnets, let go of those pearls and chill the fuck out

Whatamesssss · 23/02/2022 15:17

@Bintymcbintface

The Kathy Burke character wasn't a gross caricature of a young male. Plenty of young males looked like that at the time, they were trying to look like a typical young male.

Try again.

WonderfulYou · 23/02/2022 15:18

But somehow I, like the many transmen and women who could have been called upon, just aren't outre enough, lack sequins and sexuality.

Because they’re not talking about trans people right now, so they’re not going to call on a trans person.

I’m sure they spoke about trans people which they rightly should but they should also speak about how it’s fine to not be a stereotype and wear certain clothing and that doesn’t mean that you were born in the wrong body.
Which I think is a great message to send.

Yes they could have got a cross dresser that wasn’t so glamorous/OTT but someone who entertains for a living is going to be more engaging than someone who doesn’t.
I’m assuming this particular DQ does this regularly to explain why they do it which is why they asked them.

Having a DQ doesn’t take away from trans rights which I fully support but it just shows that you can dress however you want but still identify as the sex you were born.

Why couldn't the This Is Me Day include any of the following:

-a wheelchair user
-a guide dog user
-someone with a speech impediment
-someone with Downs
-an older person with early stage dementia
-a deaf person explaining sign language

I was 20 before I met a guide dog user- I didn't know that the dog shouldn't be touched whilst working.

Disability is a lot less glamorous than sequins and provocative names I suppose.

TheUsualShitshow · 23/02/2022 15:22

@Bintymcbintface you just sound ridiculous. So many posters on here take their time to post thoughtful nuanced responses and you just stumble on going PEARL CLUTCHERS.

At least make an effort.

You don't think Perry was a gross example of a teen male, christ I hope you don't have male dc

Why am I not shocked to see that someone who celebrates misogynistic female impersonators also uses racist, sexist slurs?

Yes this would be diverse and much more likely people they would encounter going about their everyday lives. Although I think a person with dementia would be inappropriate as it might be scary or confusing for them to do something so out of their routine.
