I follow the news and can see that There is a lot about Russia and the Ukraine. But I can’t quite figure out what is happening , what the background is, and what the truth is (bearing in mind in any war there is propaganda on each side).

Am I the only person who doesn’t actually understand what’s going on

Socks talking about “diplomatic solutions” Hmm

Haven’t the Russians given you a better line to peddle yet love ?

socksnjumpers · 22/02/2022 14:07

@BerylStrip

Yes, it will probably have an effect but the effect of not doing it will be worse. I’ve said before that Putin will invade Ukraine and been shot down by Russian sympathisers like socks before. Well here we are.

My view is that China is watching all this very carefully and if the West just resorts to a bit of pious handwringing as usual they will view this as a signal that territories like Taiwan which the covet deeply are ripe for picking.

People saying “we should not respond - it might be risky” need to see a bigger picture of what will happen if we don’t respond.

Basically I don’t think we can afford not to. I’m not confident the political will or, frankly, the cojones are there.

I am glad I’ve rattled socks. He or she can go back to sticking their tongue up Putin’s arse.

Not rattled, just a bit disgusted, but I'll get over it.

So, how do you think this crisis compares to the Cuban Missile Crisis? Don't worry, I'll give you time to google it.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 22/02/2022 14:08

Putin is the very epitome of Hitler. Hitler also choose imperial aims to expand across Europe, he had no problem with blood shed and loss of life to achieve those aims either. No one could reason with Hitler, in the same way no one can reason with Putin. They are both cold blooded psychopaths.
The invasion of an independent country in Europe (Ukraine) will go down in history on 22022022 (a good date to remember for future History students) as the start of a very very dark period in Russia and Eastern Europe.

It is either diplomatic solutions or war, Beryl. Your sanctions will not work.
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 22/02/2022 14:09

Hopefully Russia will go down in flames, and that will be a lesson for the other autocracies, because it genuinely is going to take that much to row back to even where we were last week.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 22/02/2022 14:10

I think we will choose war then socks as you say sanctions will not work in Russia. So your ultimatum on this thread shows where you really stand....

BerylStrip · 22/02/2022 14:10

Oh new lines from Moscow dearie ?

You’ve been peddling it for a while though and it’s not working. Better radio in for fresh propaganda to try out.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 22/02/2022 14:11

Socks has dropped the bullshit now and has now exposed what it really thinks.

Diplomacy on Russia's terms only OR war....

Nice!

Whether they are both cold blooded psychopaths I don't know, but they are nothing alike at all.

Putin has years of politics behind him.

Hitler was an artist who wrote Mein Kamph which is basically madness and irrational without political expertise at a time when Germany was in a terrible state after WW1 and it was all being blamed on the Jews. Look at what other countries in Europe were doing,. the state of germany after sanctions after WW1 - there is no similarity

Oooh look, Comrade Sockski is trying to present Putin as a seasoned politician with years of negotiations behind him.

That must be why he’s sending all those military units into Ukraine. For a diplomatic solution.

Socks…the stories from Moscow aren’t holding any water and you really need to try harder or it’ll be gulag time for you when you’re recalled…

Another social media site carries this rather scary report from a UK member of that site who is visiting Estonia. You can read it at www2.politicalbetting.com/index.php/archives/2022/02/22/the-mood-in-former-soviet-states/

@prh47bridge Can you or someone else post the actual video? It isn't playing in the link

Bellalastrasse · 22/02/2022 14:19

I can’t keep up with you guys. I have just rewatched Occupied on Netflix and found that chilling. It is the way incidents are perceived that is the biggest problem from Russia I think. The way acts of establishing balance and neutrality are viewed as aggressions. We can see this now with their attempt to frame Ukraine as an aggressor to Russia when we know that it is the other way round.

Bellalastrasse · 22/02/2022 14:21

I do know someone Czech who told me 3 years ago that she felt Putin wanted the old countries back and that there were Russians in the Czech Republic. Is that how it works? He feeds people back into those countries over time, they cause dissension, he attacks them saying it was the host country and that his army need to step into protect the Russians there, occupation then follows stealthily?

I am responding here only because other people are reading this.

Putin has been calling for negotiation for months. The build up is recent. He has gone into areas which were covered by the Minsk agreement which has been breached by Ukraine, he says.

I didn't say he had years of negotiations behind him. I said he was nothing like Hitler and now is nothing like the Germany and Europe of Hitler's time.

socksnjumpers · 22/02/2022 14:23

Can anyone post the link of Putin talking last night?

All the interviews I have seen have been earlier than that

Socks will be along any moment now to tel you that’s just dear old Vladimir wanting a diplomatic solution…

socksnjumpers · 22/02/2022 14:29

@BerylStrip

Of course he’s calling for negotiation. Doesn’t mean he wants it though, does it ?

You can tell the world you’re not a Russian troll, but it doesn’t mean that’s true either.

People who want diplomatic solutions don’t invade other countries. You can slant it any way you like, but that is the bottom line here.

Now piss off back to Moscow and enjoy your life there.

I am stressed out about what is happening in the world and the prospect of diplomacy failing, the affect it might have on me and my dc as well as everyone else, and I am trying to work out what is really happening, which isn't being reported in the media particularly well, I spent a couple of hours watching interviews last night which is time I didn't have and will never get back, so fuck off yourself and pick on someone else
