Repulsive trendy food

828 replies

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

I’m sure it goes the other way too, and that a typical UK food not widely eaten in Korea can suddenly become a big thing in Seoul restaurants for a few years.

KFC is a bit of a Christmas tradition in Japan Grin https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20161216-why-japan-celebrates-christmas-with-kfc

Arise 'SpaghettiNotCourgetti' i anoint you with this tin of Alphabetti Spaghetti.

FINALLY.

scooterbear · 23/02/2022 18:17

Bubble tea. So squash with bits of under set jelly in it that make it the consistency of vomit then? And here's a tenner for the privilege? Nah.

BlondeWidow · 23/02/2022 19:18

@AtleastitsnotMonday

My issue is with calling food dirty. ‘Dirty Fries’ ‘Dirty Mac n Cheese’ (its macaroni cheese too, put that’s another issue) ‘Dirty burgers’

Why? dirty is not a word I want to hear around food!

I think pomegranate in salads are great nought!

THIS! There's an awful man on TikTok who says "Look at the state of it!!" at the end of all his meal prep videos 🤢

@Everydaydayisaschoolday

Kale is horrible and tastes of mud.
Oooh I LOVE Kale! Proper organic fresh kale in Ramen noodles is amazing! I'm no health freak either, believe me.
BlondeWidow · 23/02/2022 19:26

@Nomoresmoresthensnores

Bubble tea is the most recent 'emperors new clothes'. It will soon have its day and go the way of other fads. Because it's a fiver each and just not nice. When I had one my teen said I acted like grandma does in macdonaldsBlush
When I had one my teen said I acted like grandma does in macdonalds

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That really made me laugh. I have a mother like that, I know exactly the type of mannerisms your teen is referring to! 🤣

@MarianosOnHisWay

Ramen. Watery noodles with a soft boiled egg floating in it 🤮
If it's made properly, it's more of a soup with noodles & egg in. I bloody LOVE Ramen! Nice warming broth and filling noodles mmmmm
BlondeWidow · 23/02/2022 19:30

Can somebody please explain why all vegetarian options in restaurants & pubs are now just bloody vegan? SO sick of it!

scottishnames · 23/02/2022 19:38

BlondeWidow
Because it's cheaper/simpler/they don't have to think too much.
Also, their bulk frozen foods suppliers - an awful awful lot of pub foods - sell it to them like that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/02/2022 20:10

Kale is horrible and tastes of mud

I agree. The two times I’ve made it, the resulting horrors were christened ‘sewage pies’

Tastes vile

99point6 · 23/02/2022 20:13

I remember my French exchange partner being very excited by apple crumble whilst here in 1990. We gave her the recipe. It became a big(ish) trend in France.

Cupcakes not always a disappointment. Someone brought some into work and they were devine. Had used an apple corer to remove a central plug and replace with lem curd.
Ditto birthday cake in shape of Minecraft character. Really surprisingly good madeira cake underneath.

Being served Vegan Mayonnaise in a restaurant and there is no other choice. If I am paying, then I like to have the option, just, I'm sure a vegan, likes the option to have no egg based mayo. Serve both.Do not tell what I should be having, because it's trendy, I'm paying I want the choice and real mayo! Only Reduced Sugar and Salt Ketchup served in a Restaurant, no choice. Let's not pretend, that loaded burger, dripping in cheese etc, served with fried fries, burger/bbq sauce, is suddenly healthy because you put reduced salt and sugar ketchup on it!

Taco's made in a lettuce leaf⁉️ FFS, a lettuce leaf? That is not a Taco.

You've reminded me of the jar of garlic mayo I ordered with my online shopping once...didn't realise it was vegan. It left my mouth drier than the sahara and made it to the bin in record time!
Fairislefandango · 23/02/2022 20:21

Ramen is amazing. Also, the egg is not compulsory!

EatYourVegetables · 23/02/2022 20:23

YANBU, except about avocados.

Fruit but with fat instead of sugar? Mashed with red onions, herbs and spices into guacamole? Hello?

I’d survive solely on guacamole, red wine and black coffee from now on, if I had to. (Or could afford it…)

TitsInAbsentia · 23/02/2022 20:34

@ThePlantsitter

Foodbowls. So ridiculously fake simple and yet somehow 15 quid. Also drowning in Kimchi which I'm perfectly capable of making by accident in the bottom of my fridge veg drawer thanks.

Also Mochi. Eating them is more like putting your mouth round a diabetic monkey's gonads than anything I would otherwise choose to do. My daughter loves them though so I had to fake enthusiasm through a mouthful of primate-bollock.

Pomegranate does belong in salad though.

I have laughed my way through this thread, coconut bum sweat, sadwater, limp orange earthworms and just too many others to mention but I thank you ALL for sharing your grips and making me smile.

I'm also very excited to go to the shopping centre next week and will be shouting 'monkey gonads!' every time I pass the mochi stand...haven't worked out what to shout at the bubble tea one yet....

I don't eat a lot of meat, can't stand the texture, but frankly you can shove your pulled jackfruit in a brioche where the sun doesn't shine...give me a good old beanburger any day!

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 23/02/2022 21:05

I've visiting a university for work regularly.. I can confirm the student canteen serves srirachia (on chips and burgers), kimchi on a variety of items, pulled pork, brioche buns, plant based hotdogs and lots of different kinds of fried chicken including Korean style. It isn't too bad tasting... but its all a bit fried and samey.... also not very comforting.. there is no pasta or jacket potatoes or any normal (aka old people) food like pie!
The student shop has a lot of types of Kombucha. I counted today about 6. And another whole row of iced coffee.

I actually can't even remember what our student canteen (refectory) served but I have a feeling it was salad bar as that was all the trend back then. And fishfingers chips and beans. I doubt there was much of a veggie choice. I was mostly veggie then too but can't actually remember the food.

Malibuismysecrethome · 23/02/2022 21:49

I was vegetarian back in the day (still eat mainly vegetarian) and to be honest it was just salads. I used to laugh at the vegetarians who ate fish or chicken as if that didn’t count. There were salad and deli counters and a few vegetarian restaurants. Justin de Blank did vegetarian.

I live on the north Yorks coast and had to Google mochi and bubble tea after reading about them here.

A place where they do things proper. Ie fry fish and chips in dripping.

frog spawn?

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2022 06:44

Scrambledsmegs
“Cauliflower rice and courgetti are abominations though.“

Can I offer you a recipe? Fry bacon lardons till crispy, add sliced mushrooms and cook for couple more minutes. Add raw courgetti (water squeezed out) to pan and cook for couple of minutes. Add sprinkling of aromat or salt and pepper, half a tub of crème fraiche and heat through. Sprinkle with Parmesan.
If you like, add a couple of tablespoons of cooked rice, husband likes it that way, I prefer without.
Promise, you’ll change your mind.

@me109f

Wonderful thread! Funny and true.
Really? More like a coach outing of posters who either "don't like foreign muck" and/or can't cook. Alongside that we have a side order of posters pointing out that if you take "foreign muck" and don't know how to prepare it or cook it properly then expect disappointment.

I'm amazed this thread hasn't been taken up by the DM - it would be entirely at home there.

phoenixrosehere · 24/02/2022 08:14

@C8H10N4O2

I agree unfortunately. It seems to me that there is an assumption by some if they have never heard of some of these foods it’s “trendy” or even “pretentious” when really it is from a foreign country called and made in a certain way from foods people know but are unfamiliar with the name.

Someone who has never heard of gelato could assume it was trendy or “pretentious” when really it is a type of ice cream.

Risotto = rice

Sriracha = hot sauce

Kefir = Yogurt, Buttermilk

Quinoa = Grain

Buttercream which has been mentioned isn’t made the same and there are three types one can make: American, French, and Italian and all taste different, involve different techniques and take different timings to make. French Buttercream taste like vanilla ice cream or maybe custard for some. American is sweeter but if you make it from scratch, you can customise the sweetness and Italian (if I remember correctly) uses a sugar syrup.

Reading some of these, you would think a tomato would be called pretentious if you called it with its variety when there are 10,000 types and they obviously wouldn’t taste the same .
