Repulsive trendy food

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

Same with the repeated mentions of kimchi, cucumbers etc. They aren’t ‘trendy.’ You just dislike them.

OhWhyNot · 23/02/2022 14:44

I had only been served kimchi in Korean restaurants before (mainly bbq restaurants)

In the last few years in burger/street food type places and now there is a whole array of kimchi products. It has become a trendy food like halloumi was what ten years ago.

Foods do take on trends always have doesn’t mean they were not around before

Kanaloa · 23/02/2022 14:51

If someone had said kimchi burgers or whatever I would get that. But just saying ‘tofu’ or ‘kimchi’ doesn’t make sense as they’re not random trends, they’re normal food staples you just dislike. It’s different to, for example, certain things which have become trendy via social media or are suddenly new/all over the place.

Although if there has been a sudden uptick in trendy tofu products I’ll stand corrected.

OhWhyNot · 23/02/2022 15:07

But they are on trend foods at the moment

That’s why it’s been mentioned. A few years ago when would kimchi been served other than in a Korean restaurant or fusion restaurant

Kanaloa · 23/02/2022 15:19

Well personally I still haven’t really seen kimchi served in random places? I only have it at Asian restaurants. And tofu (in my experience) has been no more available recently than ever. It’s around, as it always has been.

Punkyinpink · 23/02/2022 15:29

in relation to the receptacles used for food. John Finnemore has a good little song you might like called "put it on a plate"

Rosehugger · 23/02/2022 15:44

Tofu: trendy in China for, ooh, two thousand years.

Kimichi I have seen sold in Oxford at a cafe but they also sell produce and pizzas. Tofu I agree is definitely not a trend. I’ve been having it off and on since 2006. I’m curious on where some posters live where these things are considered trends?

positivevibesonly22 · 23/02/2022 15:52

@TheUnexpectedPickle

I'm also nominating "brunch".

Its a wanky concept meaning that you get to charge me twenty quid for scrambled eggs with smoked salmon just because you used sourdough for the toast and put some parsley on top.

Fuck off.

Tbf. Always have brunch at home on a Sunday. Have it at about 11 and then nothing till a roast at five ish in the winter.

Again, where are some of you going? Brunch has never cost me that much money and that’s eating in Central London.

Right?!

Quinoa has been trending in Bolivia and Peru for at least 3,000 years. Avocado has been present in the Americas for the same time, if not longer, too.

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 23/02/2022 16:03

actually i could really go Spam egg n chips.

i may open a cafe....for the 'nouveau grease'

Yes but this thread is about trends in the UK. So I think things like kimchi - which my parents have never heard of and which I’ve only eaten in the last few years - is a trend in terms of the UK context. Obviously a Korean family living in the UK might well have been eating it in the UK for the past thirty years or whatever.

I’m sure it goes the other way too, and that a typical UK food not widely eaten in Korea can suddenly become a big thing in Seoul restaurants for a few years.

Some trends will stick, and some won’t. I remember my Grandad saying that when spaghetti became widespread in the UK in the 1960s it seemed like a passing trend. But obviously with the benefit of hindsight it wasn’t!

courgettigreensadwater · 23/02/2022 16:25

I had to honour this 🤣🤣

Rosehugger · 23/02/2022 16:26

I've been eating tofu ever since I've had my own place and was able to choose what to eat, so >20 years. Same re avocados.

I make brunch for myself, perhaps I should charge me £20 for it to make it wanky.

justasking111 · 23/02/2022 16:27

The British thought spaghetti grew on trees once upon a time

And I’m in the U.K. and was able to get the majority of these things from my town centre or on trips to London.

Mwahahaha @jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 23/02/2022 16:41

There was an April Fool thing on TV, probably in the 60s (which I’m old enough to remember) but I very much doubt that many people were taken in.
OhWhyNot · 23/02/2022 17:06

There is a famous April Fools news report of spaghetti growing trees from the 60’s 😆

While vegan food items have become very popular so has gravy and meat. I went to a restaurant recently (there are a few around) there not much else is served than meat, potatoes and gravy served with bread or Yorkshire pudding. It was delicious 😆

OhWhyNot · 23/02/2022 17:07
