Repulsive trendy food

828 replies

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/02/2022 21:25

Inspired by the dried fruit hate thread...

Is it only me that thinks most trendy/"healthy" food is overrated at best, downright nasty at worst?

Cauliflower rice does not have the taste or texture of rice. It's just soggy Cauliflower. Reheated it smells and tastes of fart.

Courgetti is wet and dilutes the sauce with its green sadwater.

Pomegranate, mangos and satsumas do not belong on salad, especially with a garlic dressing.

Advocados are only ok.

Siracha is just expensive hot sauce. There are loads that are better.

Overnight oats have the texture of wallpaper paste and are absolutely repugnant.

And nothing, NOTHING, should be served on a shovel or any other nonsense receptacle.

Courgetti & cauliflower rice are great pasta & grain substitutes for those on a low carbohydrate diet. Avocados are brilliant fruits full of fat, protein & nutrients!

Tzimi · 23/02/2022 05:22

@SocksAndTheCity

Courgetti is absolute shit and I cannot forgive myself for the nice sauces I've wasted on it trying to make it edible. It also rots down to vile smelling pond slime within five minutes of the bag being opened, just in case anybody had thought about not using the whole lot at once.

The most repulsive posh thing I have ever eaten was a sea urchin, and I was at a work dinner I wasn't paying for so I just had to grit my teeth and get on with it. I still inwardly retch a bit when I think about that.

You should make your own courgetti, which will be much fresher than the bought stuff! Just get yourself a spiraliser for a few pounds, & you can have as much fresh courgetti & zoodles as you want.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/02/2022 05:33

I don't even make my courgetti that small - it's not really courgetti, I guess, I just use a planer and make "fettucci" (fat ribbons) of courgette, and then fry them in butter, olive oil and salt. Fab!
Can't actually bear steamed/boiled courgettes if they're overdone - agree with the slime commentary then. Aussies like to use zucchini as a restaurant veg a lot, but they barely steam them - I'm not over-keen on them crunchy either!

I just use low carb vegetable slices instead of lasagne, and in fact it had more flavour that pasta, and you're also not eating carb-laden pasta.

Just felt inspired to point out that things like jackfruit, coconut water and other such tropical things don't travel well and are often picked unripe or tinned etc.
I live in the tropics and when people come to see me they often say fruit has been ruined for them now they know what it really should taste like. Things like tempeh, Rendang, laksas etc are wonderful when eaten in situ and lousy when poorly imitated by some wanky gastropub.

I can't get my head around the trend for people being supposedly healthy and ethical by not eating meat etc but shipping foods from all over the globe and eating palm oil slathered processed junk.

oh yes, since having had a fresh ripe banana on holiday I don't appreciate the floury things here anymore.
TheUnexpectedPickle · 23/02/2022 07:43

@Simonjt she thought it was an ordinary bean burger type thing, she'd not heard of those burgers (can't remember what they're called). We both thought it was actual meat at first, we asked the waiter and they showed us the website.

@ParadiseMIA On the agriculture side, eating plant-based causes less harm to the planet, in addition to (of course) less suffering to animals. Massive amounts of crops, for example, are cultivated not to be fed to vegan humans, but to be fed to animals destined to be killed for meat.

The above link is very informative.

On the health side, it's certainly better to eat a whole foods based diet than one focused on processed foods. Whole foods plant based is an optimal diet for health, and you're correct that many vegans don't rigidly adhere to this. It's probably still better to eat processed vegan food on occasion than heavily processed meat, though, since the latter is a very well established carcinogen. Vegetarians have on average seven additional years of life compared to omnivores, and vegans fifteen years.

Or buying something like a melon wrapped in plastic film. Fresh coconut that's just been whacked with the machete and drank through a straw is fab.

See, I actually love courgettes and that sounds absolutely delicious but
  1. I'd want that as a side dish, not as a pasta substitute with sauce on (it actually sounds like it'd be amazing stirred through pasta!)
  2. Cooking it like that seems to defeat the object of courgetti being a healthy substitute!

DottyHarmer · 23/02/2022 07:55

I agree. If people wanted to be ethical they should be eating turnips and swede, not jackfruit and avocados (which our mania for has resulted in large-scale land clearance and gang wars in S America ).

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/02/2022 07:57

@TheUnexpectedPickle - it's amazing with a meat sauce - wouldn't use it with a cream sauce, I don't think.
I did it when I was low-carbing - it's fine for that! Grin

@UniversalAunt

‘ What the absolute fuck is dry aged carrot??’

I frequently find dry aged carrots at the back of the fridge, it’s a local speciality in our house.

Those go into a soup in our house. Ditto that very sad looking leek that’s Ok once you’ve taken it’s outer clothes off, and the poor potato that’s valiantly sprouting shoots in the hope that I’ll plant it, instead of hacking it to death and chucking it in the soup.

Being served Vegan Mayonnaise in a restaurant and there is no other choice. If I am paying, then I like to have the option, just, I'm sure a vegan, likes the option to have no egg based mayo. Serve both.Do not tell what I should be having, because it's trendy, I'm paying I want the choice and real mayo! Only Reduced Sugar and Salt Ketchup served in a Restaurant, no choice. Let's not pretend, that loaded burger, dripping in cheese etc, served with fried fries, burger/bbq sauce, is suddenly healthy because you put reduced salt and sugar ketchup on it!

Taco's made in a lettuce leaf⁉️ FFS, a lettuce leaf? That is not a Taco.

sas1879 · 23/02/2022 09:12

@Innocenta

Out of curiosity, what makes your options so restricted? *@sas1879* (Asking because I also have a lot of complex restrictions for medical reasons, on top of being vegan!)
I have a lot of digesitive issues a lot of foods upset my sytem and I end up in a lot of pain and then I end up in the hospital.
Selma22 · 23/02/2022 09:22

Hate to admit but I like most of those things.Grew up drinking kombucha (had a jar at home ),love bit of fruit in salad (makes it less bland ) and other newer trends. Trying new stuff and having fads is nothing new .Have a look at 70s stuff...everything in jelly and many other questionable dishes.
Who wants to eat meat and potatoes for the rest of their lives? Some things are nice some ar emotions but its great to discover something new and exciting

ThanksItHasPockets · 23/02/2022 09:24

Vegetarians have on average seven additional years of life compared to omnivores, and vegans fifteen years.

A vegan who has lived long enough to have had their (long) life measured must have adopted their vegan diet at a time when doing so was pretty hard work, and would have comprised a lot of plants, whole foods and cooking from scratch in the absence of much vegan convenience food. They are probably therefore also a self-selecting group of people who are likely to be very health-conscious. It will be very interesting to see if this benefit is maintained with the advent of widely available, heavily processed vegan foods.

Innocenta · 23/02/2022 09:26

@sas1879 My situation is somewhat similar, not as bad as yours, though. I'm really sorry you have that to deal with!

Bangolads · 23/02/2022 09:32

The things the OP have described are nice, sorry love. As are so many or the things on here people are declaring shit. As for all the other moans about dirty fries etc etc isn’t that just how good fashion goes. Gosh what bunch of miserable moaners you all are. There’s always some silly buzz word🤷🏼‍♀️ I’d worry about the fact it all bothers you so much.

powershowerforanhour · 23/02/2022 10:05

Coffee in really shallow, wide mugs like a shallow bowl with a handle on it, so it goes cold really quickly. Have they never heard of convection? You can't even wrap your hands round them- if coffee is losing heat, the heat should be transferring into the cold hands of the grateful recipient.

Well, obviously I do only eat mince and potatoes because I think bubble tea is grim and buttercream-covered cupcakes and sickening and gross. There's no spectrum here. It's a binary of fun! adventurous! flavoursome! or bland! stodgy! plain! Hmm
WitchWithoutChips · 23/02/2022 10:08

@NinaDefoe

Sloppy, wet (undercooked) scrambled egg. I've been stung too many times and now ask for well done, SET, scrambled egg.

Breakfasts with any kind of salad on the side.

This is getting ridiculous now. That’s not trendy, it’s just your preference for how you like your eggs. I never have scrambled eggs when I go out because they always overcook them.
Selma22 · 23/02/2022 10:18

Hehe !Very true:)

NinaDefoe · 23/02/2022 10:23

Who wants to eat meat and potatoes for the rest of their lives?

Would this be more tempting? 🤣

Roasted fillet of Australian Kobe beef
nestling in a Kent garden pea purée temptingly accompanied by a succulent spinach and onion compote served with to die for, triple-cooked Maris Piper chips.

Isn’t it up to you to check out a restaurant before going there? You can choose not to go or spend your money at such restaurants. They aren’t forcing you to go to them. Not on them if you can’t be bothered to research before you go.

Also, think you’re describing a lettuce wrap which is normal in many other cultures.
