ASDA having no checkouts that are not self serve is stupid

So it's a rant really , I've not been to the ASDA I normally go to for a few weeks and in that time they have removed all tills that are not self serve 😞 it's absolutely ridiculous it's so incredibly slow even when you don't struggle but older people who were struggling had to have staff help them anyway so why not at least keep 1 or 2 tills normal I honestly can't understand why this is supposed to be better .
Yabu nothing wrong with this it's better
Yanbu there should be normal tills available if you don't want to scan your own shopping.

Not to mention people who walk in the exit to the self-serve area in order to bypass the queue.

Mamamia7962 · 21/02/2022 14:44

I would hate that, I don't mind self serve if it's basket only, but hate the trolley self serve tills. It's so slow if you have to wait for one of those.

Sportslady44 · 21/02/2022 14:46

yes its annoying complain.

Its their job to scan the items not yours.

SartresSoul · 21/02/2022 14:47

I prefer self serve personally and the only reason I dislike aldi is because they don’t have this option. I understand why some people prefer the human option though of course so it should always be available.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 21/02/2022 14:47

It’s cheaper. One lot of software and the machines are all leased.

The supermarkets have been walloped by Brexit, covid, staff shortages (driven by those two things mostly) and rising wholesale costs, so they’re reacting to protect their margins.

I don’t mind a self-service checkout myself. I saw a man remonstrating with one a few weeks ago. He called it a cunt, and then kicked it when it didn’t respond. Was quite funny.

ilovesooty · 21/02/2022 14:48

I rarely shop in person at my nearest Asda as they only have self service tills.

Sportslady44 · 21/02/2022 14:50

they lose so much in shoplifting it actually dosent make sense.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 21/02/2022 14:50

Believe me it won't be the staff's decision; it's down to corporate beancounters.

Staff will have had their hours cut and quite possibly their pay too. Just take your customer elsewhere if you prefer personal service.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 21/02/2022 14:50

Boots have a bad habit of doing this, I hate it and it means really long queues, which I'm sure a staff member or two would clear much more quickly.

SweetFelicityArkright · 21/02/2022 14:51

I voted yabu but only because the reason this is happening more and more is to streamline costs and maximise profits, which is what these companies are interested in.
They're not interested in it being slow or if people are struggling, with 3 normal tills and 6 self serve tills that's at least 4 members of staff, 9 self service tills is probably one or two members of staff to cover them - less wage and more profit.
And yes, some people will vote with their feet and shop elsewhere but most will moan about it, possibly have a moan to the assistants manning the self serves, and continue to shop there anyway because it's convenient/within budget etc.

Ramalamadingdongs · 21/02/2022 14:53

I love self service. The pinnacle shopping experience is the one where you scan it as you go with the handheld thing. Pay, go. When lidl or aldi introduce those it'll be amazing.

Herja · 21/02/2022 14:54

Fucking hate self service - I have burned my fingertips lots and less sensitive touch screens don't seem to read through the thickned skin - no issue with phones but self serve hates me. I have to use my little fingers (or get a DC to do it). I actively avoid shops with exclusively self serve now, because it's just too slow and frustrating.

I’ve come very, very close to doing that, I detest them. I’d rather pay more for my groceries than do their job for them.
FrugralMcDougal · 21/02/2022 14:56

My local Asda has retained about 8 staffed tills, there are 8 scan and go and then around 5 self serve that have their own conveyor belts like a normal checkout for bigger shops and then around 12 tills that are self serve.

I like scan and go because I don't have to unpack a trolley onto the conveyor and repack it. My shop is just slightly too big for the conveyor as they seem short. Now I just scan and put it in my bag. Pay at the end. All the self serve tills are also scan and go tills too so never a queue.

They have a distribution centre behind the store so all the home deliveries are picked from there I believe and they also offer click and collect. To be honest I prefer not to have interaction with anyone, I am quite shy and this makes my shopping life so easy.

But we are lucky that we still have staffed checkouts but also a myriad of other options too. I think they should always have some staffed check outs.

Honeyroar · 21/02/2022 14:57

I just wouldn’t go anymore.

billyt · 21/02/2022 15:37

That's why I go to a Lidl store near me which isn't actually the closest (by about half a mile so no great difference.)

It has self-service tills. So much quicker. Much preferable.

HermioneWeasley · 21/02/2022 15:40

It costs money to employ people to sit at a till and supermarkets are trying to be as cheap as possible, particularly at the moment

Aldi get away with it because people are willing to stand in long queues but they won’t in the main supermarkets

IstayedForTheFeminism · 21/02/2022 15:53

I hate self serve with a passion. They always play up when I use them. Either not registering things in the "bagging area" or claiming there's an unexpected item. Then I have to wait for a member of staff to sort it out.
My ex loved them and they only played up for him if i was stood with him. Not even if I scanned it, just if i was there Hmm

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 21/02/2022 16:02

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda

Shoplifter’s dream
It really is. Our Asda is such chaos now that security are just waving people through the doors, because they can't cope with the amount of times the alarms are going off due to so many security tags are being left on.

Things like £14 battery toothbrushes have security strips on. So do some unmarked lumps of meat. The till cashiers used to remove them or deactivate them - now this is not being done unless you telepathically know to ask a member of staff who may or may not be available at the self-service scrummage area where no-one can now hear themselves think.

I think it's going to cost Asda more than it saves.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 21/02/2022 16:05

They still need staff to supervise them for people struggling and for age restricted items. So it seems pretty stupid to me. Also if you are buying a whole trolley load it is much more efficient for an experienced member of staff to do the scanning. Self-serve should be for small baskets of items.

StrawberrySquash · 21/02/2022 16:07

They are so slow! Because they have to check the weight of each item as you scan it so you there's a load of small delays that really add up. My local Wilko has a normal till set up to scan your own and it was so weird using a till that actually worked smoothly again (I used to work in a shop and I could scan efficiently on a proper till). Self scan for trolleys is really crappy and just shops being tight.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 21/02/2022 16:07

They always play up when I use them

I did have them sussed but every so often they seem to change something on them.

The other day I bought some rolls but they didn't have a barcode and the thing I found didn't match the weight. But it doesn't let you just go back of course, it calls staff. Why not introduce a back button so you can correct it?

JuergenSchwarzwald · 21/02/2022 16:09

the weight checking thing is really annoying. In our local Waitrose there are two sets, one of which checks weight, the other set doesn't, so you can bag as you go and scan one item multiple times if you have more than one. So much more efficient.

Supposedly you can use your own bag in other shops but it always has a pink fit when I try!

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2022 16:09

I love self serve, but in Asda I use the Scan as you Shop thing because it's just way quicker. No need to get involved with the conveyor belt, pack your shopping once and that's it.
