ASDA having no checkouts that are not self serve is stupid

So it's a rant really , I've not been to the ASDA I normally go to for a few weeks and in that time they have removed all tills that are not self serve 😞 it's absolutely ridiculous it's so incredibly slow even when you don't struggle but older people who were struggling had to have staff help them anyway so why not at least keep 1 or 2 tills normal I honestly can't understand why this is supposed to be better .
Yabu nothing wrong with this it's better
Yanbu there should be normal tills available if you don't want to scan your own shopping.

I notice my local Asda now have a little screen on the self checkout which is a closeup of your face while you’re scanning. I assume it puts off shop lifters but it’s very disconcerting. Grin

Anyway Asda are now stocking Chunky Monkey ice cream so I forgive them anything.

use scan as you go instead - shopping straight in the bag ready to lift into the car, none of this unloading the trolley and reloading it again business and you have a running total of what you've spent as you go

LoopyDream · 21/02/2022 22:11

Complain! I’ve had two shops in my area install self service and they were soon replaced. One was a Co op and one was a Poundland

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 21/02/2022 22:22

My local ASDA has 6 big self checkouts for trolleys, 8 for baskets and about 8 tills, I hate self checkouts because I have a spine injury and whilst it's OK scanning my shop, I scan like a pro, it hurts like hell bagging it, I just can't do it anymore. So I always, regardless of where the poor self service monitor suggests I go, go to a till.

I had an issue in Tesco yesterday, because I wouldn't use a self service checkout, I queued for a normal one to save my back. I had to tell the bloke in front other shoppers that I had a spine injury and would like to wait for a checkout. I get these guys have a job to do, shepherding people around, but sometimes people can't use self service.

Its why I love Sainsbury's and their scan as you shop, just scan the screen, pay and go. Jobs a gooden.

DotBall · 21/02/2022 22:28

Scan and Go in Asda and Sainsburys are my go-to now. In, shop, out. Hate doing it any other way, even self-service tills seem frustratingly slow by comparison these days.

I think a lot of people are missing the point that footfall in supermarkets has fallen with the surge in online shopping thanks to covid. They don't have as many physical customers in the shop. So they use the staff to do the online shopping orders rather than sitting at a checkout where they're not needed.

FWIW, I prefer the scan as shop. I pack my own bags nicely as I go around the shop and never need to queue. It takes 2 minutes to check out. I genuinely don't understand why so many people would prefer to waste their time unpacking the trolley, queuing ages and then repacking trolley at the otherside of the checkout.

OfstedOffred · 21/02/2022 22:37

I love self service tills and especially smart scan type options where you scan as you go. There were teething issues when they were first brought in but I havent had issues with them in years now and they are faster.

OfstedOffred · 21/02/2022 22:40

what about people who like to actually talk to people on the till, we are becoming a nation of zombies, not talking to anyone.

I talk to lots of people who I actually know. When I'm in the supermarket I'm usually busy and accompanied by two small children, I'm not obliged to want to stop for a chit chat with a till worker i don't know from adam

I think you are missing the point, which is that some people need to be served at a normal till, even if the only reason is that they are elderly and find self service intimidating.

I hate shopping. I shop at Asda and want to get in and out as quickly as possible. At the time that I usually do my shopping there was usually only 1 checkout open. However about 3 weeks ago that 1 checkout disappeared. I did my shopping as usual (trolley load) and when I asked staff member where checkout was I was informed that there was none and I was expected to use the handheld scanners or self scan. I felt like screaming.
The next week I did scan and go. I had used it before when first introduced to this store but didn't get on with it as the holder for the scanner is on the left hand side of the trolley and I am right handed. I found it so awkward. I hated it but I found it quite interesting and discovered that the price on the shelf is not always the price that comes up on the scanner. I picked up a pot of coleslaw. £1 exactly on shelf but scanned as £1.05. There were other items like that too. The price scanned was the price on the receipt.
I don't really want to go back to Asda but are other supermarkets any better?

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 21/02/2022 22:53

I like scanning my own shopping as I go round the aisles but I can see this would be a massive problem for the older generation.

My Mum is in her 80s and would really struggle now with self service tills plus she likes to talk to all and sundry on her visit.

We're almost getting to the point where we don't need to interact at all.

TrashyPanda · 21/02/2022 22:57

I avoid self service tills wherever possible.
Ghastly things.
Our Lidl and Aldi have proper tills, with friendly staff.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/02/2022 23:00

Absolutely hate self-serve. Would rather wait in a queue than use one.

Moonface123 · 21/02/2022 23:03

All stores are heading this way,.it will never go back.
lf you have ever worked.on a checkout you would know its like a form of torture, the same conversations over and over again and constant complaints, l dont know of one single member of staff who misses them.
Self service tills are surrounded by cameras which staff and security are constantly viewing from different locations within the store, they will also send through many testers to see if they can catch staff out.
Our store earns alot more through dot.com than money through tills, dot.com keeps rest of store afloat and doesn' t have theft issues to deal with.

N0tfinished · 22/02/2022 07:06

@Ramalamadingdongs

I love self service. The pinnacle shopping experience is the one where you scan it as you go with the handheld thing. Pay, go. When lidl or aldi introduce those it'll be amazing.
Yes!! It means you only have to handle items once. Off the shelf & straight Into your shopping bag. Much easier & less exhausting
Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2022 08:29

I think if some people were shown how to use Scan as you Shop they would be converted.
My parents are 80 and if they would only give it a try I think they would find it so much easier. Dad hates queuing, and he's quite techy. Putting the shopping into the bags once, rearranging the packing as you go around the shop, then the next time you empty those bags is at home.
But no, they do it the old fashioned way and moan about the queues and the cashier going too quickly. Hmm

I know that there's the occasional rescan and you know that when you sign up.

the problem with that is the "random" checks they make, where you have to unload everything and go through the till anyway. You may as well just go through the till.
JuergenSchwarzwald · 22/02/2022 10:07

@merrymouse

I always use self-serve, but think there should be planning restrictions on supermarkets that don’t also have tills with staff.

I don’t understand how a shop that is completely sell serve can meet accessibility requirements.

Indeed. Same with car parks that only let you pay via smartphone app. No idea how they meet equality requirements! They clearly don't.
Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2022 10:08

In my experience the random checks are very rare and don't involve this. Just about 7 items scanned from the bag and not the whole shop unloaded and put through a till. Might be shop dependent but it is an argument people use to not do Scan as You shop.
Even with the odd random check it's a quicker way to shop.

Sloth66 · 22/02/2022 10:09

A supermarket near me has done this, and I shop elsewhere now.

AuntieMarys · 22/02/2022 10:09

I love scan and shop in Sainsbury's. I will never go back to checkouts where you have to empty your trolley and then pack. What a waste of time.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 22/02/2022 10:11

until they choose to do it the one day you are in a hurry to get out which sods law says they will

people on MN have posted here in the past that once you've been flagged for one check they then seem to check you all the time

CharlotteRose90 · 22/02/2022 10:13

I love the self scan tills. So much easier and you can do it yourself. I actively avoid the normal tills as it’s always full of slow people and people that want to have a gossip. I want to do a quick shop and get out of there not be stuck behind people that can’t do it themselves.

ABitBesotted · 22/02/2022 10:14

Annoying when you have multiple bags to fill

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2022 10:15

I think a lot of people would feel the same if they would just give it a go, but the supermarkets don't seem to promote it that much. You would think they would if it meant fewer queues at their tills, and less waiting for customers.
