ASDA having no checkouts that are not self serve is stupid

So it's a rant really , I've not been to the ASDA I normally go to for a few weeks and in that time they have removed all tills that are not self serve 😞 it's absolutely ridiculous it's so incredibly slow even when you don't struggle but older people who were struggling had to have staff help them anyway so why not at least keep 1 or 2 tills normal I honestly can't understand why this is supposed to be better .
Yabu nothing wrong with this it's better
Yanbu there should be normal tills available if you don't want to scan your own shopping.

I much prefer to use self service check out and will actively choose one over a manned checkout. I've used them for years and find them far quicker than a normal checkout. My local Morrisons and asda have checkouts with conveyer belts and a larger packing area for trolley sized shops.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2022 10:17

@JuergenSchwarzwald

Even with the odd random check it's a quicker way to shop

until they choose to do it the one day you are in a hurry to get out which sods law says they will

people on MN have posted here in the past that once you've been flagged for one check they then seem to check you all the time

Well yes, they could do in which case you might choose to go through a till that day if you are in a huge rush? Although you may have to queue for it.

If you are finding that the random checks are more than is normal check at customer services why that is, they can have a look at the loyalty card.

CounsellorTroi · 22/02/2022 10:18

The Waitrose self checkout is the best, they have tables in between the machines that you can put your bag/purse down on without it shouting about unexpected items in the bagging area.

Yes, there's no scales is there? Also card only.

I hate this with a passion but not as much as I hate it in clothes/homeware shops.

Last time I went into town I went to a large M&S, Wilko and Matalan - at every single store I got to the till to find out they had been converted to self service tills. I had to scan and pack my own clothes - you had to fanny around removing the hangers and there was even one of those magnetic thingys to remove the security tags Angry.

I was almost in tears by the last shop. It's the last thing you need with a load of shopping bags and whingy, fidgety 3 year-old in tow. Each store had a single 'customer service' till which inevitably ended up with a massive queue because the vast majority of people don't want to scan/bag their own clothes shopping.

Then we had to squat on the floor to write a birthday card because the shopping centre have removed all the benches (covid). Add £5 parking fee for 2.5 hours and it's no wonder the high street is dying.

PS I'm aware this is a money-saving exercise and not what the staff want so it's not a complaint about them. One of the M&S staff was very apologetic and came to help me as I was trying to stop DD pulling stuff off the racks while scanning...

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 10:23

Yanbu op

Its as of thr stores don't want our custom any more.

They'd rather have 3 or 4 people hanging around doing not very much, round by the self service tills, waiting to approve the alcohol purchases that stick one of those peope on a check out.

Makes doing a big shop impossible n.your own because u have to stop when it's full scan and bag some stuff then go back the other end to re load some more stuff.

Makes you wonder wtf we are actually paying for. Theres no staffing costs reflected in the price clearly Hmm

Just because we find it useful to scan a sandwich crisps and a roll.of bon bags in our lunch break we are now supoosed to do our weekly shop ourselves now too.

If there's staff to deal with the problems this presents. Then there's staff for the tills

I would love to see 3 or 4 people waiting to approve the alcohol. Which supermarket is this? Generally the red light goes on and the wait begins. (Especially Morrisons)

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 10:33

Oh you still have to wait don't get excited. There are conversations to be had first.

Plus I have lousy timing. When ever I go somehow it's a break time/shift change and I have to wait fir the " hand over" before I get any assistance

Bigboysmademedoit · 22/02/2022 10:35

I use the M&S Scan and Shop where you scan and pay on your phone - no queues, no hassle.

I'd still like to know which supermarket, having 3 or 4 people to run the checkouts sounds poorly planned. Usually there's one poor member of staff running about getting replacement items for the till staff and sorting out the self service problems.

Is that the one where you use the App and you can just walk out without going near the checkouts as it's linked to your payment card?
Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 10:43

Its a branch of sainsbury's. You'd likely find 1 person on the check out. The rest well...

Just don't do click n collect for the clothes you always end up feeling like youve caused some unnecessary hassle. They must have a long walk to where its stored cos it always enters that awkward time scale where u just start thinking " are they coming bacm" or " if we keep sending people to check where they are and if they are OK will they not come back.either" Grin

I did drive a few miles to try a new one out and stupidly got excited when I saw well maimed check outs. Went back a few weeks later and ut to has fallen to 1 staff member on the til

Oh our local Sainsburys is horrible. Dark and depressing. No Scan as you Shop, and the staff look quite unhappy.

Asda seems better, till support staff running about in yellow fleeces so at least you can see them, but wearing headsets so seem somehow unapproachable. You have to find one at the end of the shop to get a car park ticket.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 10:52

I live in a town with virtually every supermarket going. Duplicates of some.

Youd think they'd try and make themselves more appealing to customers in order to bang the custom. But no. The only competition seems to be who can survive the longest on one till Hmm

Thewindwhispers · 22/02/2022 10:58

They know it sucks. It isn’t supposed to be ‘better’ it’s just a way for supermarkets to fire most of their staff to save money, and have the extra work done by the customer.

😔

TellingBone · 22/02/2022 10:59

I could easily use scan and shop. The reason I don't is that I might genuinely forget to scan something. This must happen a lot surely?

I have visions of being accused of shoplifting over a forgotten or mis-scanned tin of beans. Imagine! Shock

Unsuremover · 22/02/2022 11:00

I don’t mind self service tills but I always try and use regular tills because I don’t support staff having their hours cut. I get they are businesses who want to make as much money as possible but I can make a conscious choice not to aid in that. They could cut masses of card and plastic signage.

Blossomtoes · 22/02/2022 11:01

This. I refuse to use them. I’ll stand in a queue for as long as it takes to go through a staffed checkout. At least Aldi and Lidl open more tills if the queues get too long. If they can do it why can’t the other supermarkets?
Whatwouldscullydo · 22/02/2022 11:02

Does anyone find that cos of covid often the self service tills are card only or alternate ones not in use. So self service is far harder than it needs to be too

Blossomtoes · 22/02/2022 11:21

Card only suits me. It’s literally years since I carried cash.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2022 11:26

I don't think large supermarkets routinely 'fire staff' to save money, I don't think they can do that. They just don't recruit when people leave, or offer VR.
A lot of the time the staff that would in days gone by sit at the till waiting for a customer are deployed elsewhere in the shop and if a queue builds get asked to come back to tills for a bit.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2022 14:13

Gosh, they're brave. Not sur how it fits with disability legislation.

Sportslady44 · 22/02/2022 14:15

self service is a dis-service and is no service at all.

Branleuse · 22/02/2022 14:17

I wont use self service tills if i can help it. If I have to, then ill ask for assistance.
Theyre a pain in the arse and im fed up of so many working class jobs being lost to automation.

LondonQueen · 22/02/2022 14:17

I popped into Asda a few weeks ago and they still had regular tills, I quite like interacting with a real person.
