ASDA having no checkouts that are not self serve is stupid

So it's a rant really , I've not been to the ASDA I normally go to for a few weeks and in that time they have removed all tills that are not self serve 😞 it's absolutely ridiculous it's so incredibly slow even when you don't struggle but older people who were struggling had to have staff help them anyway so why not at least keep 1 or 2 tills normal I honestly can't understand why this is supposed to be better .
Yabu nothing wrong with this it's better
Yanbu there should be normal tills available if you don't want to scan your own shopping.

YNBU. Somebody in an office somewhere probably thought it was a great idea.....wonder if they will still think that in December when customers walk away due to the chaos this will cause.

ImInACage · 21/02/2022 16:12

I hate it, as someone with a spinal injury, I can't manage well with self service tills and usually need someone to help me pack. I would be totally prevented from shopping if my local supermarket brought this in.

MischievousBiscuits · 21/02/2022 16:14

I hate self serve. Its just more jobs being taken away and if we ever have to use it, there's always a twat or giving the person looking afrer it grief.

Arabellla · 21/02/2022 16:15

Well, I hope they have cameras on them to catch all the thieves and ban them.

Chely · 21/02/2022 16:15

I have noticed there being fewer normal checkouts which bumps up wait times and pushes many to self checkout.

I like to scan and pack myself, I like the scan and go even better. Although it is annoying getting pinged for a quality check, they always mess up my neatly packed shopping.

Polyanthus2 · 21/02/2022 16:17

We got a Tesco Extra on the edge of town - the big claim was all the jobs it would bring - well the town centre is tumbleweed and now no jobs - brilliant.

TulipsGarden · 21/02/2022 16:20

I hate it. Our local Boots is self-serve only now and there's no room for a pram (and presumably also a wheelchair) - it's maddening.

I noticed the lingerie tills in M&S were self-serve yesterday too. The men's department on the same floor still had staff though, of course. Do they think we're too embarrassed to buy our own knickers from humans?

Sportslady44 · 21/02/2022 16:23

what about people who like to actually talk to people on the till, we are becoming a nation of zombies, not talking to anyone.

OrganisedChaos22 · 21/02/2022 16:25

I prob would end up abandoning my trolley and going elsewhere.
One of our ones is massive and only has 6 manned tills.
I rarely go there because there's always a massive que.
. I haven't got time to stand scanning my trolley full. (not a conveyor type more like basket style) try and balance it all without it saying item removed etc.
I can't be arsed to be honest.

Kitri · 21/02/2022 16:26

I have no idea what you're talking about. Asda does have checkouts that aren't self-service.

There's more than one ASDA store in the country, you know.Hmm
HopefulProcrastinator · 21/02/2022 16:29

I actually left a large trolley full of shopping in Morrisons on the shop floor when the till person closed the only till with an employee on it and they directed me to the self service.

There were several others who could have stepped in to cover the till for the person to take a break/finish their shift but they all made a point of ignoring my request. So I literally left at least £100 of shopping where it was and made a formal complaint on my way out.

I'm not fighting with a self service till for that amount of shopping and will avoid any shop expecting me to do the same.

It's not like they even offer self scan so you can be organised and sort yourself on the way around which is much more palatable even if I disagree with the principle

inmyslippers · 21/02/2022 16:30

Soo I likeable

merrymouse · 21/02/2022 16:30

I always use self-serve, but think there should be planning restrictions on supermarkets that don’t also have tills with staff.

I don’t understand how a shop that is completely sell serve can meet accessibility requirements.

inmyslippers · 21/02/2022 16:30

Unlikeable that should say

ErrolTheDragon · 21/02/2022 16:31

Anyway - if stores don't have manned (hmmm as an aside, usually womanned .... it's women mostly losing these jobs ) and/or not wide enough for a wheelchair, is that actually legal in terms of serving customers with various disabilities? Maybe a visually impaired person is somehow expected to make themselves known and a staff member will put the stuff through the 'self service' till?

Um..the ones you've been to do. Have you visited every Asda in the land?
notanothertakeaway · 21/02/2022 16:41

I like self serve tills, if they have sufficient staff to deal with queries

Agree with a PP that they're not very inclusive

Danikm151 · 21/02/2022 16:51

The lidl near me has self checkout and regular tills. The regular tills are rarely open! the self checkouts are baskets only(that the lidl baskets are too big for) but they expect you to shop a full trolley on one of those things. So frustrating!

Laiste · 21/02/2022 16:52

I don't mind doing a small basket load, but i don't know how i'd cope doing a trolly load over that tiny platform.

You can't have more than one bag on the go at a time can you?

FloodTheBathroom · 21/02/2022 17:03

Asda has always been awful for tills. I went in my nearest before the pandemic at 5pm on a Friday, peak going home from work time and the queues were like Christmas. The staff just got on with it and said it was all money saving.
Now there are no tills at all and it's fucking bedlam. I usually only go for a few items which are cheaper there but may as well do a whole shop, there's no "popping," in now as the wait is so long to pay. I hope smaller shops will do better out of this decision.

SoManyTshirts · 21/02/2022 17:08

Our main Boots store has done this. It makes shopping even more of a chore, and I don’t go there anymore. Saved me a few bob, as I’ve had to search around to get a couple of things and found it cheaper to buy direct.

caranations · 21/02/2022 18:07

Self-service is all right if you have a basket, everything goes through ok and you don't have to wait five minutes for a surly youth to saunter up and press buttons.

It is an utter pain in the arse if you have a trolley load.

VelvetChairGirl · 21/02/2022 18:15

I was in Lidl today they have about 4 cash and card self service tills and about 15 card only ones.

everytime I am there it ends up as one massive queue of people wanting to use cash and the odd person sailing thru who uses card, but week after week its the same and they never increase the ratio of cash ones.

it seems most shops dont care and just want to annoy customers one way or another.

my asda actually has the highest ratio of manned tills in the area (for now), sainsburys is the worst here, if I needed to be quick I would not goto Sainsburys as they often only have 1 till open, if Asda gets rid of the tills I wouldn't bother with it.

That's because cash is a pain in the arse to shops. They want you to use cards as then it is done and dusted, no counting cash, having cash securely stored, picked up, providing all denominations of change etc. Why do you think shops offered cashback? Not to just be nice but to get rid of piles of £20 notes.

Use card then you can skip the huge queue of people waiting for the few cash only ones.
