In America it means small annoying animal.

WildPoinsettia · 20/02/2022 23:20

@Mistressiggi

In meaning, how is it different to a word like, say, fucker?
Its a bit worse. Fuck is a crude word meaning sex. So fucker is like a ruder version of shagger. Fucker is mostly used as an insult though, meaning lowlife scum.

Buggery is anal rape and a crime. So that's worse.

Yes don't confuse "bugging" with "buggering", whoever that was.

Florenz · 20/02/2022 23:20

It doesn't really matter what it means, "berk" means but nobody would bat an eye it a child said called another child a berk.

caranations · 20/02/2022 23:21

My swear filter is set at 'Would you say it to the Queen?' so if you'd think twice and probably refrain, then it's a swear word.

Florenz · 20/02/2022 23:21

That should say "berk" means the C word.
PriamFarrl · 20/02/2022 23:22

It’s a swear word. Not the most offensive but not a word to use in polite company.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 20/02/2022 23:28

Isn’t that bug? As in a type of insect? Nothing to do with bugger.
vickyc90 · 20/02/2022 23:29

I think it's a north south thing in Newcastle saying nee bugger is heere, is basically saying no one is here! It's also used to say something has gone wrong. Like bugger that knacked man.

In American it's also the word for snot.

As several of us have pointed out, it really depends where you live.

North/Midlands then the words "bugger", "buggered" or "buggery" really aren't considered offensive. The word "fuck" was considered more than crude, really rude. And "cunt" would be so far beyond acceptable.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 20/02/2022 23:31

Many meanings, not just reference to anal sex Hmm

1 usually vulgar : to commit sodomy with
2 : DAMN
3 : to put into disorder : BUNGLE, BOTCH —often used with up

Definition of bugger (Entry 3 of 3)

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 20/02/2022 23:31

Not to be confused with the American word for 'bogey' which is booger.

My daughter came home from high school exclaiming 'Frigging hell!'

I told her to look up the meaning - she didn't say it again (in front of me).

My granny always used to say when something had gone wrong - 'Oh - bugger, shit, fart, trump!'

I have been known to utter those words in exasperation.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 20/02/2022 23:32

And, totally irrelevant, but i’d put in a vote for “Oh, bugger” being one of the most satisfying of swears to say. Definitely beats shit and fuck, ties with Bloody Hell, and is beaten hands down by an Irish friend of mine who exclaimed shock at something with the marvellous phrase “Holy Mary, mother of god, in her infinite wisdom!” Grin

Booger is snot in the US not bugger 😂

American snot= Booger.

I'm so surprised at the amount of people who don't seem to know what words mean.

I'd certainly bat an eyelid at a child calling another child a "berk" because I know what it means and if you don't know what the word means you shouldn't be using it anyway.

supperlover · 20/02/2022 23:45

I always thought of it as a seriously bad swear word until I lived in North Devon where it was used regularly as part of the locals vocabulary. I don't think anyone thought about what the word actually meant.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 20/02/2022 23:45

Berk means idiot or fool no?

Since when did it mean cunt?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 20/02/2022 23:48

Rhyming slang - Berkshire hunt = cunt. Allegedly Grin
MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 20/02/2022 23:50

Ah I see 😆

Bromse · 20/02/2022 23:59

It's very old fashioned, I remember my mother using the word sometimes (& sod it). She was horrified at the very thought of the F word! I was told off for say, "Shit".

Times change. We all know what 'bugger' means nowadays.

I remember watching an episode of AbFab in which Edina said, "What the buggery bloody....". It was quite effective.

I would discourage a child from saying it but they do try out words. In the scheme of things, it's not so terrible.

BoredZelda · 20/02/2022 23:59

Mine was my grandma, but essentially it’s the same thing 😆

TimePoliceTeam236 · 20/02/2022 23:59

Allegedly

But that's pronounced Bark-shire, so where does Berk come into it? Confused

Bugger is definitely swearing OP and I would not let a child say it.

Nelliephant1 · 21/02/2022 00:00

It's no ok.

AlternativelyWired · 21/02/2022 00:00

But Berkshire is pronounced barkshire so that makes not sense. My dad used to say berk and roberts or berken Roberts.

I'm fond of the word bugger, northern lass that I am.

Anniegetyourgun76 · 21/02/2022 00:04

It's definitely a swear word and shouldn't be used to children, you should probably look up it's meaning.

Februarybluee · 21/02/2022 00:04

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints

Is it mild? A cock up the arse isn't mild in my book.
😂🤣
