Why as humans do we never ever learn? It’s always about testosterone and power and oil.

Fuck off with. Why was it possible for so many countries to pull together when COVID kicked off and now it’s back to slapping their balls on the table to see who has the biggest set.

It just all so unbelievably depressing.

We need to work with them, instead of pushing them in a corner, but we're not.

I'm sure they'd be happy to hear your suggestions seen as though the countless talks have not been successful. Ideally one that doesn't throw the Ukraine under the bus would be good.

ParsleySageRosemary · 20/02/2022 11:38

Ukraine as a neutral independent state is I believe what is under diplomatic discussion.

What suggestions now? How about we kept to our commitments after the Cold War ended?

We can suggest a separate agreement for Ukraine and safeguards for that, but will Russia trust us?

We need Russia to balance the thread from China but we are far too shortsighted to see it.

ParsleySageRosemary · 20/02/2022 11:39

China is not a military threat to Europe.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 20/02/2022 11:41

@ParsleySageRosemary

China is not a military threat to Europe.
And here we have a perfect illustration of geopolitical shortsightedness.
caramac04 · 20/02/2022 11:43

I think Boris has made a stupid statement, it is most definitely not helpful.
I am concerned that Russia will invade Ukraine and apart from the completely unnecessary deaths and pollution, our fuel prices will rise even more

Alexandra2001 · 20/02/2022 11:46

@ParsleySageRosemary

Seeing as James Cleverly thinks the Russian have the biggest build up of troops in Europe since WW2, i very much hope he and the Tories have nothing to do with these negotiations.

Such a level of ignorance at the top of the Govt is frightening.

Imnotafemistbut · 20/02/2022 12:55

What a silly thread.

Yeahthat · 20/02/2022 13:25

@Alexandra2001

I largely agree with you. The US and NATO have been very intransigent; deescalation and a peaceful solution is possible, but it would require concessions on both sides.

They demand that Putin withdraw his forces while refusing to countenance any limitations on NATO expansion.

Ukraine is a sovereign nation with every right to seek NATO membership; NATO has every right to say no, as it would unnecessarily inflame tensions in Europe.

One can only imagine the reaction of the US, were Russia to lead a similar alliance in South America which then expanded membership up to and including Mexico, involving join military exercises and the deployment of missiles.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2022 14:00

What a silly uniformed comment.

China is not a military threat to Europe.
So there economic supremacy, cyber warfare capabilities, technology theft and political manoeuvring in Africa don’t present a clear and present threat to global stability?

Presumingly you find Just fuck off with this fucking war shit a sensible and well- informed comment ?

Putin is a mad willy waver. I think the OP is right.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2022 15:13

Wells it’s not as pluriel as ‘silly’

Yeah, l do find it a well informed comment. It’s exactly how l feel. I don’t find the huge numbers of troops and squabbling countries ‘silly’

I find it disturbing. So l wish they would ‘fuck off with this was shit’ tbh.

Abhannmor · 20/02/2022 15:17

@Getoff..this is really the response of a con artist and not a serious world leader. The Russians have found you out and hence we are where we are.

Tealightsandd · 20/02/2022 15:34

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

As much as I dislike Boris. None of this current situation is the fault of the West. Allowing Ukraine to fall is madness and the Russians won’t stop there. Europe needs to find alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on Russia.
We (UK) should use our own. Obviously it was always a bad idea to rely so heavily on imports from Putin. But also, how utterly ridiculous, regardless of anything else, that we choose the less environmentally friendly and more expensive imports - over taking advantage of our own natural resources.

Meanwhile, whatever the rights and wrongs of who is the 'baddie', Boris needs to understand that we are not as strong or rich as America. (I also suspect this would be his Blair moment rather than Thatcher or Churchill, particularly as a public already battered by austerity and Covid, doesn't want a war).

We have no money for essential public services (the treasury can't even find enough to continue free Covid testing - to protect the vulnerable and the NHS). Nor do we anything much of an armed forces (cut to the bone).

Perhaps, given we would be a ally, Biden could sell us some of America's abundant oil and gas...At mates rates?

Tealightsandd · 20/02/2022 15:41

I also agree with a pp. The current situation makes me think more of the lead up to WW1 than WW2.

Or perhaps Boris thinks this will be like the 1850s. Crimea (and the surrounding region) has been disputed territory for a long time. Another war almost certainly won't resolve the centuries old issues.

Tealightsandd · 20/02/2022 15:57

I'm sorry @Acidburn

I have no idea why people do that. Why do they automatically assume your politics, just because of where you're from? Ridiculous and ignorant. I can just imagine how outraged some people would be if everybody abroad accused them of being a Boris fan (or Corbyn, depending on the individual's learnings).

Russia is a massive country with a large population. Why people assume you're all the same, I don't know.

Tabbacous · 20/02/2022 16:19

@Tealightsandd well everyone was against fracking weren't they- and plenty of European producers closed down to make way for greener energy which hasn't materialised in great quantities yet which was a great initiative wasn't it. I don't really think not wanting to spend millions/billions on covid testing is unreasonable- most countries have been charging for a while anyway. We aren't by any stretch perfect but some people are so critical I wonder where their utopia of perfection is that they're comparing to.

AuntMasha · 20/02/2022 16:50

Putin waving his tiny dick, Johnson trying to channel Winston Churchill to distract from his lies and corruption. It’s like watching a bunch of ageing bald men fighting over a comb.

No one wants this conflict. And I should think neither Russian mothers and fathers nor Ukrainian ones want to see their sons coming back in body bags.

ParsleySageRosemary · 20/02/2022 16:50

So there economic supremacy, cyber warfare capabilities, technology theft and political manoeuvring in Africa don’t present a clear and present threat to global stability?

A clear and present threat to the economic ascendancy of the Western nations, yes, and possibly their interests overall. I’m not overkeen on the massive globalisation that’s made us so dependent on events and supplies elsewhere. China is also a military threat within SE Asia, and clearly our allies Australia and Japan are concerned.

But not currently likely, nor ever really, to be mounting invasions of Europe.

ParsleySageRosemary · 20/02/2022 17:03

The burgeoning alliance between China and Russia is cause for concern, but we’re hoping for deescalation - aren’t we??

Tealightsandd · 20/02/2022 17:33

Why are people calling to spend (billions) to protect Ukraine? Going off your argument, they should learn to 'live with' it (if there was an invasion).

Talking of defence (including economic), that doesn't work out too well, with a significant proportion of the working age population disabled by Long Covid.

Btw across the pond, our ally, Biden, has extended the Covid emergency laws.

Tealightsandd · 20/02/2022 17:38

Bit confused actually. We must protect Ukrainians - because people deserve protection...but actually no they don't? After all why go to war to kill and disable many, when SARS-COV-2 will do the job for you.

Tabbacous · 20/02/2022 17:38

I don't think people are calling for billions to be spent are they? By your learning to live with it comment I presume you are comparing a country being invaded by a hostile force to covid (which both countries are affected by on top) which is bloody weird and ignorant.

with a significant proportion of the working age population disabled by Long Covid

Any studies, evidence or whatever else to back up this claim that this is likely to be the case? Not overly arsed what US, a complex and very different country is doing about covid laws to be honest.
