Why as humans do we never ever learn? It’s always about testosterone and power and oil.

Fuck off with. Why was it possible for so many countries to pull together when COVID kicked off and now it’s back to slapping their balls on the table to see who has the biggest set.

It just all so unbelievably depressing.

  • Mrs Thatcher took us into the Falklands, she was extremely triumphant about it.

Harold Wilson kept us in the UK out of Vietnam, thank goodness.*

I’m absolutely no fan of Thatcher but that’s comparing apples and oranges….Wilson wasn’t in the situation of having to respond to the belligerent act of a junta who had invaded a British Overseas Territory

The British pretty much told the Argentinians we weren't interested in the Falklands, we withdrew almost all its defences, it was such a disastrous policy that Lord Carrington, the FS resigned... such different times eh? Mrs Thatcher then had the Belgrano sunk to ensure there would be no negotiated withdrawal, it was an argentinian WW2 ship that was outside of the exclusion zone and sailing away from the islands.

If that all isn't a planned war, i don't know what is.

JustJam4Tea · 20/02/2022 07:38

Disagree counties pulled together on pandemic. This war thing is just todger waving and distracting from poor domestic polling.

If we end up in a war because fucking Boris Johnson likes to dance to abba and get pissed up in his flat…I’ll be annoyed.

The Islands, a British dependent territory, had just been invaded. I don't think she arranged that as a causus belli!

It's possible that the invaders miscalculated, and thought that a woman wouid not have the 'stomach for war' and would not mount an effective defence

Although she had refused the Falkland Islanders British passports not long before the war. It suited her purpose.

Yeah there was more to it than that, Belgrano.

It’s always about testosterone

Well, the biggest UK warmonger seems to be Truss. And Patel is hardly a sandal wearing hippie either. I don’t remember Thatcher being much in favour of peace and love, nor Hilary Clinton for that matter…. Sorry, but women are just as ruthless as men in positions of power.

The only difference being that male leaders order millions of young men off to die to maintain the comfortable status who for the rich, while female leaders order, er … millions of young men off to die to protect the same status quo.

Yellownightmare · 20/02/2022 07:45

@GreenTeaPingPong

OP, imagine you're made British prime minister overnight, what do you do about the situation? Withdraw the UK from NATO? Ignore Ukraine's pleas for help? Send British troops to fight Russia (which by the way, we're not doing)? Believe Putin when he says he's not going to invade? Tell your voters that you're not going to get involved in any foreign wars - like Trump did?

It's easy to criticise, less easy to think of a solution to an actually very complex problem.

What I find depressing is how authoritarian, corrupt leaders like Putin manage to stay in power, as do other dictators.

Doesn't he just bump off anyone powerful enough to threaten his power base?
supermoonrising · 20/02/2022 07:46

I wouldn’t believe a word that is coming out of No 10 which has time and time again shown itself incapable of telling the truth. Russia will make a couple of symbolic small incursions as a warning to Ukraine against joining Nato. It will all be forgotten about this time next month.

speakout · 20/02/2022 07:50

Examples of women working in a way that upholds a patriarchial structure is not really useful.
It's the structure of power that is at fault, and often upheld by women too.
Women who reach positions of power usually do so at the expense of family life, jjobs, structures all fit round the idea of a parent jetting off or working long hours while not caring directly for family.
Those that have the most beneficial things to say are voiceless, they are the carers the disenfranchised, mostly all women.

speakout · 20/02/2022 07:52

I am involved with charity that supports unpaid carers.
Whether caring for a child with support needs, family member, elderly person.
A recent survey showed that 94% of carers in my area are women.

bultaoreune · 20/02/2022 07:54

It is not as simple as that no matter how much we disagree with it. Russia was always going to invade Ukraine, they have to to protect their own borders and dwindling military, it was just a matter of when.

Hate Boris though. He is scaremongering. A war will come at a very convenient time for him. Fuck if it crashes the economy and bankrupts the country. It will distract everyone from his idiocies so far in dealing with the pandemic, inflation and he also gets to play a hero like Churchill. And we all know how much he loves Churchill. .

notimagain · 20/02/2022 07:54

If that all isn't a planned war, i don't know what is.

Yep, makes perfect sense, Hmm I’m sure she and her advisors, including the Chiefs of Staff thought it would very easy to win a vote winning war 8000 miles from home (verses just 400 for the Argentinians) against a similarly equipped opposition.

What is true is it was a massive failure of diplomacy and deterrence and Lord Carrington wasn’t the only one who should have resigned over it..

As for the Belgrano, worth remembering who fired the first shots in the conflict, where and when.

Belgrano was post that and was a Argentina flagged surface combatant..many on the Argentina side have accepted over the years have accepted sinking her was a legitimate act…including her captain.

Ah yes, and Putin is the last bastion of truth and probity is he? The presence of considerably more than 100,000 troops on 3 sides of Ukraine's borders* suggests something more than a couple of 'small incursions, doesn't it? As an independent country Ukraine should be autonomous, no? *Verified by several countries only one of which is the UK, give your head a wobble.
CandidaAlbicans2 · 20/02/2022 07:56

It's a male animal thing, this time the willy-waving species is human. It's all about posturing, fighting for territory or fighting for access to the females. Looking out of my window the other day it was a pair of male Blackbirds having a hell of a scrap, on the TV it was stallions squaring up to each other, stags rutting, and fish fighting. Testosterone at it again!

MarshmallowSwede · 20/02/2022 07:58

When have me ever been good leaders? We have centuries of evidence of them screwing up yet they are still being elected in.

They have already started fighting in Ukraine I’m afraid.

Pro Russian forces (trained by Russia) and the Ukrainian forces have been fighting on the border. A few Ukrainian solders have been killed. That might not be reported widely.

peboh · 20/02/2022 08:08

@FourChimneys

Anyone else wish more women were in charge of the world? There would be far less willy waving for a start.
Honestly not really. Why does anyone truly believe the women of politics would be any better than the men? They're all as bad as each other, and no matter who is in charge now, the worlds going to hell in a hand basket.

I don't.

Mumoblue · 20/02/2022 08:13

It really does stress me out, it feels like everything in the world is just getting worse, now we’re going to have a war on top of everything else?

Alexandra2001 · 20/02/2022 08:16

@notimagain

3rd world country, with conscripted military vs a 1st world one with the backing of the USA.
Thatcher lied to the commons and said the ship was sailing toward the falklands.

100s of young argentinian conscripts drowned horribly when that ship was sunk, which then led to british ships being sunk and dozens of our young men dying too.

Perhaps the ship should have been sunk but my belief is that Thatcher, then the UK's least popular PM (much like Bojo is now) wanted a war, she'd have sunk it wherever it was... war unites a country, look how BJ has gone up in the polls recently? BJ/Truss are billing this situation as WW2/Hitler and Putin wont stop at Ukraine!

For some politicians, there is nothing they wont do to keep power, as Ludlum said "politicians dont care about deaths, just that they are not seen to be associated with them"

OneTiredMam · 20/02/2022 08:19

Ukraine have already told the west to stay out of it. The west are making it worse.
Sleepy Joe and Bare faced lair Boris are definitely trying to start a war.

Benjispruce5 · 20/02/2022 08:20

It’s absolutely abhorrent. Putin is so dangerous. I remember as a teenager, the relief when Gorbachev was talking about perestroika and now we have Putin! Depressing.

The Russians and Ukrainians have been fighting each other for the last 8 years, there have been 14000 deaths!! inc 100s of civilians.

Wonder why this conflict has suddenly risen to the top of the worlds agenda?

Ukraine should be declared a neutral country with both sides guaranteeing it wont join NATO or be invaded and that the Russian backed separatists pull back.

How would the UK like it if the EU and Russia formed a defence pact and Russian troops help military exercises along the channel coast?

Try naming all the countries Putin has invaded compared to all the countries the USA/Nato have ?
Namechangeagain84 · 20/02/2022 08:23

I don't think this will blow over any time soon. It's too deep rooted and complex.
I dont think Putin is afraid to press the button either.

Benjispruce5 · 20/02/2022 08:25

Plus I hate that Boris seems to be revelling in his Churchillian like status. Anything to distract us. I haven’t forgotten though and I hope everyone else hasn’t either. Biden seems too old school to me. Hate it .
