Do you get jealous of people who go on cruises

Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

I absolutely love cruises, I’m flying to Miami in two weeks and then going on a cruise to the Caribbean and Bahamas. In June I’m going on a Med one.
I love the sunsets, and sunrises, breakfast on the balcony, all the onboard activities and I love sightseeing. I also really enjoy the cocktails and the watching the evening shows.
I’ve been busy planning lots of fabulous things to do while I’m in the Caribbean and Bahamas.
I go on lots of other types of holidays as well and don’t get the urge to put their holidays down.

MrsJulianFawcett · 19/02/2022 17:13

Enforced jollity - strikes terror in my heart. Forget about “seeing other countries”, three hours following a rolled umbrella will give you no insight or experience of those ports. At. All.
Shared dining tables, shared viruses. I think I’d rather do Butlins, at least you’re free to leave.

Newnamefor2022 · 19/02/2022 17:14

It's my vision of hell. Sailing in a floating tower block and then insufficient time at the places you want to visit, with a side order or potential disease!

gogohm · 19/02/2022 17:14

@ImInStealthMode but I do that anyway because if I don't take a cruise we do road trips. Can't do with staying in one place for two weeks. Even on the odd occasion I've stayed in the sand hotel a week I've rented a car and travelled around

EssexLioness · 19/02/2022 17:15

I went on a cruise for my honeymoon. Lots of good points: the food was amazing (and constant), very easy way to travel and see several places at once, and the scenery was spectacular at times (we went on a Baltic cruise and sailed through parts of the Norwegian Fjords). Staff and service was brilliant too.
However, days at sea can get pretty boring and you soon get fed up of looking at the ocean. It’s like a very small village on board and you see the same faces over and over again. Even large ships can feel a bit claustaphobic after a while. Entertainment decent but all the shows are fairly similar and forgettable IMO.
And the seasickness! 🤢 DH was fine but I was really ill for the first three days (even with seasick pills) and there is no end to it. It’s not like a 2 hour boat ride where you will soon be back to shore. Couldn’t sleep as I felt worse laying down. Ended up in tears after the second night and told DH I wanted to go home. Went to reception and they gave me stronger meds which helped a lot, although the patronising woman we saw seemed amazed that I felt unwell as the sea was pretty calm: I could see that myself but try telling that to my stomach. With the extra meds I stopped feeling sick but my brain refused to adapt to the movement of the boat and I had the sort of disorientation you get with vertigo, so I still felt pretty rough for the rest of the cruise.
If it wasn’t for the seasickness I would still go on a cruise in the future but unlikely now as feeling so dreadful really put me off.

CounsellorTroi · 19/02/2022 17:15

@irishfarmer

I haven't been on one for those asking, but I really have no desire to go on one. I LOVE to travel. But hopping into a country/ port for a couple of hours really does not appeal to me. I would feel cheated that I didn't get to see the place.
That is rather the point, it’s like a taster menu in a restaurant. If you really lime somewhere you can always go back for a proper ho,I day.

I find it a lot more interesting arriving somewhere by sea than dropping into a faceless airport tbh.

HopefulProcrastinator · 19/02/2022 17:15

I wouldn't go on a cruise even if I was given the best possible room/perks for completely free.

Absolutely no idea why anyone would want to.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 19/02/2022 17:15

Not even remotely, i get motion sick, plus have a major fear of drowning, or getting stranded in the middle of the ocean. I'd be on edge the entire time panicking something would go wrong and we'd sink.

LoveFall · 19/02/2022 17:16

We have not cruised since Covid. We are booked in September on a cruise we have done a few times, Vancouver return, which means no flying for us.

It goes to California and back, stopping at ports like San Diego and Santa Barbara, Sometimes Catalina Island.

So, so relaxing and pretty scenery. Santa Barbara rolls out the red carpet and it is a lovely day riding on their tram for a couple of dollars, trying out a restaurant, visiting their amazing court house etc. They have volunteers who help you find things. They don't get many cruises so they want to make the most of it for their economy.

We will see how cruising in the Covid world is.

Dishwashersaurous · 19/02/2022 17:16

I can't think of a worse holiday. No escape.

Initial covid spread was on cruise ships.

As I’ve said not all ships are floating tower blocks. Some of them still look like ships.
lljkk · 19/02/2022 17:16

I don't worry about germs.
I could imagine feeling claustrophobic.
Seems expensive for what it is, potentially quite boring.

OMGItsEarly · 19/02/2022 17:16

@Windbeneathmybingowings

Different countries you can only explore the port of. And be back on time or else.
Recently saw a video on TikTok.

Someone was filming from the ship. A couple were racing towards the ship & those filming were commenting ‘I wonder if they’ll hold the ship for them’…nope 😂 they ran like hell and were almost there when the ship set sail.

neverbeenskiing · 19/02/2022 17:17

God, no. I've never seen the appeal. I hate boats for a start.

ouch321 · 19/02/2022 17:17

This thread is a tad cringy, people trotting out the same old lines about Petri dishes and whatnot.

I've not been on one but don't let these whiny people put you off.

Just because it's not their cup of tea doesn't mean it can't be yours.

People don't have to all like the same thing.

There is a girl on YouTube that talks about her cruising experiences - EmmaCruises - which you may find worth a watch to see what it's actually like.

Joystir59 · 19/02/2022 17:18

I'm not jealous of any one

gogohm · 19/02/2022 17:18

@Sportslady44

Whether you are seasick depends on the ship, where your cabin is, the weather, the itinerary etc. I'm going on the qm2 soon which is a liner so really good even in very rough seas. I've not been sick on any cruise though but I've only been on the med or in the Caribbean until this year's. Friends were on this week in the storm and said it was fine. It is fairly expensive but no more than a comparable hotel plus flights.

LowlandLucky · 19/02/2022 17:18

A cruise is my idea of hell.

VioletLemon · 19/02/2022 17:20

My worst nightmare.
Trapped on a floating bed of infectious diseases. Poor hygiene standards.
No fresh food.
No scenery.
Lack of choice.
I can't imagine why anyone would even consider a cruise any sort of luxury.

CockingASnook · 19/02/2022 17:20

My idea of holiday hell, probably second only to Dubai. Trapped in a confined space with people and viruses I detest. Hugely polluting. Overrunning local ports (hence cruises being banned from cities like Venice). Tedious activities, like flopping by the pool. And endless breakfast buffets.

Okbye · 19/02/2022 17:20

All these posters saying 'its like a prison/shopping centre/nothing to do' etc have any of you ever actually BEEN on a cruise?! (Probably not going by these answers!)

I love cruises, going to bed and waking up in a new place the next morning without having to wrestle your way through an airport and sleep sitting up on a plane is a great novelty! Cruises have plenty of places/options to eat/drink so you're not just eating 'at the same place every night' as well.
The entertainment is very good - they do West End level productions which are really very good.

If I could afford to cruise twice a year with Disney I'd be very pleased indeed!

To those nay-sayers - try it, you just might like it 😄

HeyUpits2022 · 19/02/2022 17:21

One of my friends worked on cruise ships for years. She was on all types of ships, but said the best ships were the smallest.

However, if you asked her if she would go on a cruise as a passenger it would be a resounding no.

Busy, loud and claustrophobic.

TroysMammy · 19/02/2022 17:21

Every time someone says they are going on a cruise I think of the film Carry On Cruising. Being stuck with dreadful people you can't escape from and of course Jane McDonald type entertainment. Not for me.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/02/2022 17:21

I have a fear of heights so would need to have an inside cabin and never go on deck. Seems a little pointless.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 19/02/2022 17:21

Actually, I think I might even pay not to go on a cruise ......
