Do you get jealous of people who go on cruises

Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

Countries that you don't really get to see because you're barely on land (and usually also responsible for causing the place harm with the cruise ship).

Don't think it really counts as visiting a country if all you did was spend 2 hours being escorted at speed around a few sights before returning to the boat.

ProfYaffle · 19/02/2022 16:45

Entertainment Confused Oh dear God, that sounds like the worst bit ...

TheUsualShitshow · 19/02/2022 16:45

Oh god no.

A floating hellscape full of the type of people who enjoy cruises?! I'd do a Goldie Hawn.

NandorTheRelentlessCleaner · 19/02/2022 16:45

To me they are like floating blocks of flats, too many people wanting the same (limited) amount of loungers, shit entertainment, too many people, tiny rooms, seasickness, descending on the locals like a mass of locusts and not actually experiencing any local culture

It’s such a sad choice to me Grin I love holidays, but cruises… nah

TheNinny · 19/02/2022 16:46

Floating Petri dishes. If you eat something that disagrees with you, you risk being locked in your cabin (knew someone this happened to, so they can rule out noravisrus or something). If you stop anywhere it’s so busy getting on/off boat. Santorini was hell when the cruise ships landed for a few hours. Forced shitty evening entertainment. I’ve never been on one though so possibly could be called a jealous cow, but I honestly would rather go on a 14 day holiday on actual land.

megletthesecond · 19/02/2022 16:46

Sort of. DS has allergies so a cruise would be a good way to travel. I'd love to do The Med.

But they're environmentally horrific.... and germs 😱.

AnyFucker · 19/02/2022 16:46

Nope, never fancied a cruise

Crammed in with a load of people I have no interest in talking to, too breezy out at sea, sitting through the “entertainment” every night

Give me a private villa with its own swimming pool in a quiet area any day. Now that’s something I yearn for in between trips.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/02/2022 16:47

2 weeks with people like my mother? No. Thank. You.

RedToothBrush · 19/02/2022 16:47

Fuck no. Its my idea of hell.

TheProvincialLady · 19/02/2022 16:47

I would rather not go on holiday at all than go on a cruise. Stuck with the same people all the time, crowded, nothing to do except shopping, casino and organised fun. Nothing to look at except the sea, apart from when you dock and ruin a place for the day. Floating Butlins. No thank you indeed.

CounsellorTroi · 19/02/2022 16:47

@Sportslady44

what about all the good things though lol the entertainment, the being at sea, the different countries!!!
Depends what line you go with. Those floating apartment blocks are horrible, I prefer a smaller ship. Not interested in dressing up either. It’s fun going to bed knowing you will be in a different place in the morning.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/02/2022 16:47

No. They don't appeal to me.

CraftyGin · 19/02/2022 16:47

Y'all sound jealous Grin

ImInStealthMode · 19/02/2022 16:48

People always sell the different countries thing, but the idea of rocking up somewhere like Barcelona or Rome or Palma and only having 6 or 7 hours to explore before proclaiming it 'done' gives me anxiety.

How would I know I did the best thing? Would I end up having to choose between more sights and less relaxing lunch with a glass of wine? Will I miss out for not being there overnight? What if there's something amazing that happens at 7pm but we need to back aboard at 7.15?

I need at least 3-4 days and a range of sights / activities in a new place to feel like I've 'done' it properly.

Don't like the idea of being trapped in a floating hotel either, but I can't eloquently express why.

orinocosfavoritecake · 19/02/2022 16:48

Everywhere you visit people resent you and wish you weren’t there?

trumpisagit · 19/02/2022 16:48

All the bad things above plus everywhere you go people hate cruise liners.
Too big, the tourists aren't staying overnight so not bringing the dollars, but bringing the crowds.
Also the other people!
And seasickness, and norovirus.
Floating prisons...

Totalwasteofpaper · 19/02/2022 16:49

Countries You barely see the countries and are under pressure. If you don't get back in time the ship leaves without you. In popular ports you have to queue for hours to get on and off. being at sea Pop down to any UK coastal town and go seal or whale watching (there a seal sanctuary in Norfolk 😍) You will feel much closer to the sea than on a giant tankard of a cruise liner.

The entertainment
Horses for courses. I always think they look a bit cringe and Las Vegas-y on TV documentaries. I'd rather go into London and see "proper" West end theatre or musical

Sportslady44 · 19/02/2022 16:49

ha ha good thread ive suddenly stopped feeling envious.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/02/2022 16:50

Heres a question: is it because you want to go on a cruise? Or because it sounds luxurious and you think youd like to go?

taxidermissy · 19/02/2022 16:50

No way. Shelling out a fortune for floating Butlins meets Bluewater with mediocre refrigerated food for the masses , is not my thing.
For the same money you could have a lovely pool villa, fresh local produce and wine.
Cruises are massively bad for the environment.

Yellow85 · 19/02/2022 16:51

Not even a little bit. I couldn’t imagine a holiday with that level of structure. I’d stress every time we docked about missing the boat - too much to actually enjoy myself. Wouldn’t suit me at all.

VariationsonaTheme · 19/02/2022 16:51

Depends who you go with. I’ve been on a few, never felt crowded at all, rooms were a lovely size and had balconies, plenty of food choice, decent entertainment when I wanted it, definitely more than a few hours in a port. Choose carefully and they’re amazing.

This! I don't see how you can fully appreciate a place if you only visit it for a few hours.
WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 19/02/2022 16:51

A cruise would be my idea of hell:

  • it's on water (sea sickness)
  • you're stuck with the same people , with no escape
  • your accommodation is one tiny room
  • you're essentially stuck in the same town (a couple of shops, places to eat, people) but all condensed and crammed into a ship
  • you have to eat in the same place every night, no option to stay in your apartment and cook something you fancy or pop out to an interesting local restaurant or chiringuito
  • I can't think of anywhere worse to be ill /shit your eyeballs out than on a cruise ship (and a lot of people seem to get ill)
yikesanotherbooboo · 19/02/2022 16:51

No to envy!
I can see some attraction for disabled people who for what ever reason find travelling difficult and inconvenient.I've known plenty of people in this group eg an elderly blind widow in the family who loves new places.
There are also places in the world that are probably best visited by sea so I would exclude those .Beyond those reasons they epitomise for me the worst of holiday camp/ AI type holidays with added claustrophobia ,seasickness and environmental damage.
I cannot imagine ever having the desire to go on one.
