Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

@Sportslady44

ha ha good thread ive suddenly stopped feeling envious.
I don’t think many people posting have actually been on a cruise.
Sportslady44 · 19/02/2022 16:52

Heres a question: is it because you want to go on a cruise? Or because it sounds luxurious and you think youd like to go?

second one,

Ugh hell no.

Stuck on a ship with a couple of thousand people? No thanks. 😣

BlanketsBanned · 19/02/2022 16:53

I cannot rhink of anything worse than being stuck on a cruise, I would love to travel around the workshop by train though.

trumpisagit · 19/02/2022 16:53

@BiscuitLover3678

Doesn’t appeal to me at all! Horrible tiny rooms for so much money. You are literally stuck with the same people and if you get sick you are literally trapped in your room, can’t go anywhere! So far from any hospital. Op have you ever got seasick? It’s awful.

Honestly claustrophobic central!

My Dad told me when someone was unwell on his cruise they were dumped at the next port.
Sportslady44 · 19/02/2022 16:53

@KellyJonesLeatherTrousers

Nope, never fancied one. Jealousy is in general a waste of time emotion, can’t you just be happy for your friend.
of course, just felt a little envious too.

second one,

Luxurious how? Because of the marketing?
Hummingbirdcake · 19/02/2022 16:54

I do get holiday envy e.g. lovely Caribbean or Northern Lights ones but I have never wanted to go on a cruise. Overnight ferry trips are quite fun.

Sloth66 · 19/02/2022 16:54

They are my idea of hell, especially those huge ships with 8-9 floors and thousands of people on board. In fact, I’d pay money to not have to go.

FatOaf · 19/02/2022 16:54

No. I can't understand them. I would hate to be trapped in a massive floating hotel with thousands of other people.

Sportslady44 · 19/02/2022 16:54

do people still get seasick, they have big stabilisers on the new ships today.

Actually I think I would.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 19/02/2022 16:55

Yuck. Scary, tacky things.

AuntMasha · 19/02/2022 16:55

The idea of being stuck on a massive floating gin palace in the middle of the ocean with a bunch of randoms fills me with horror.

Just want to say thank you to your friend for going on a cruise so that I don’t have to.

YesPleaseMary · 19/02/2022 16:55

Lol no, pay thousands to stay in a floating prison cell along with hundreds of other people who think that just because a big boat has a spa and a restaurant and a cinema and third rate "entertainers" in sparkly costumes it somehow warrants being called "a holiday"

lapasion · 19/02/2022 16:57

Can’t really see the appeal unless you’ve got a massive budget and can afford the big cabins with balconies etc. Or if you’re older or have mobility problems and don’t want the hassle of airports. I worked with someone who was an avid cruiser and used to keep in touch with the people she cruised with on private Facebook groups. But she was very social and outgoing compared to me.

I also think I’d find it frustrating to visit a new place and only see such a small part of it. I’d rather take my time and explore a bit.

Luckygrey · 19/02/2022 16:58

I cured myself of a short lived desire to go on a cruise ( which I can't afford!) by looking at YouTube videos of cruise ships in storms.
Worth a shot OP?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/02/2022 16:59

I’d like to go one day, as I don’t really like flying , but it’s not something I’m eaten up with jealousy about. There are other kinds of holidays I also want to go on / want to go on more.

CounsellorTroi · 19/02/2022 17:00

Mumsnet snobbery is strong on this thread!

MaryStuart · 19/02/2022 17:00

@ProfYaffle

Oh God no. They look like floating shopping centres to me.
This. And you can’t even escape. My idea of hell. I suppose the only positive is there are lots of bars so you can get pissed. But that’s it.
FlyingFlamingo · 19/02/2022 17:00

I was tempted, once. Then my parents went on one and told me that one evening there was a ‘patriotism party’. This involved singing Britannia Rules the Waves waving a union flag Envy (that really really isn’t envy)

No, just no

stargirl1701 · 19/02/2022 17:01

Good God no! Urgh! I cannot think of anything worse than a cruise!

Wheresthisgoing · 19/02/2022 17:01

No way. I worked on the legal side for a cruise operator and the norovirus issues alone still make me feel sick.

formalineadeline · 19/02/2022 17:01

Excellent summary.
Loopytiles · 19/02/2022 17:01

Don’t think would enjoy a cruise much, but understand holiday envy. Have some wealthy friends who do lots of holidays I’d like. Sometimes envy can be useful, eg showing what we might enjoy or feel frustrated with, spurring us on to organise something (within budget!)

Aposterhasnoname · 19/02/2022 17:02

I would genuinely rather stick hot pins in my eyes than go on a cruise.
