Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

[quote CounsellorTroi]Re waste, this is an interesting read, though I doubt the antis will set much store by it.

Excellent PR article written by a cruise firm! It's okay everyone they admit they have masses of food waste and sewage but they burn it so that's cool. One ship uses millions of plastic bottles but it's sent for recycling god bless them! And the best thing is they admit to discharging grey water at sea as it's 'rarely harmful' and black water at sea as long it's not in an environmentally sensitive area. If that's the best their PR can do then the situation is worse than I thought.
And that's for Symphony of the Seas, one of the most up to date cruise ships on the oceans so Christ knows what the rest of them do.

takemebacktothe80s · 28/02/2022 13:30

No because I would feel very uncomfortable, with posh people asking me how much I paid.

What are airlines doing to help? All those people saying they wouldn't cruise, how many go on long distance flights without a care about pollution? How many use their car when they could walk?

How much waste occured by all the foreign hotels Brits love to go to, abroad but in the UK too.

So hypocritical! if you care so much, don't go on holidays unless it's camping in your back garden!

DetMcNulty · 28/02/2022 14:02

We should cut back on flights ( i have), but even on this very thread the cruisers have admitted they fly 1st so its a double whammy, and per km cruising is far worse, you'd have to be a total idiot or wilfully blind not to understand that. Planes are bad enough, but imagine the energy it takes to move a hotel, cinema, pool rolled in one. Oh, and I don't take a car when I could walk or train either.

ToMockAKillingBird · 28/02/2022 14:12

Never fancied a cruise. I get seasick on a pedalo though 😂

My Aunt and Uncle go on cruises all the time, they're in their 60s. Love the whole 'dressing up for dinner' etc, they only go on Cunard ships though - it's more their scene.

I never realised how environmentally unfriendly cruises are, makes me feel a bit better about flying.

"Posh" people wouldn't ask how much you paid.

Pretentious people may!

CounsellorTroi · 28/02/2022 17:37

Good god, wouldn’t think of asking anyone how much they’d paid. Not posh either.

Posh or not, that's one question I've never heard asked ... there's just too great a risk that someone else will have got a better deal, thus putting you off your dinner Wink

Goldfishbowls · 28/02/2022 18:47

Cruise ships can be great places for Coronavirus, Norovirus and other bugs. Unless you’re spending £££s your bedroom’s tiny. Pools and other activities are oversubscribed. And the carbon footprint is huge.

Lolabray · 28/02/2022 18:53

Nope.. don’t let someone else’s happy times affect yours. Why don’t you plan your own trip?

CruiseLover · 28/02/2022 19:02

I know this is an old ish thread but I absolutely love cruising! I worked on Cruise Ships for years when I was in my 20's. And now regularly cruise as a passenger. Feel free to AMA

In all my years, hardly any crime, definitely no murders.
Not like Butlins
Nice people
Amazing food (buffet & A La cart)
I enjoy visiting ports for the day, knowing I can go and explore another time if I want to.
Not overcrowded... for every photo of a crowded pool, there are 5 other pools with hardly anyone in them. And the vast inside areas have tons of space for sitting or lounging
Cabins aren't usually tiny.... there are beds, wardrobes, bathrooms etc and plenty of space to move around.
5* medical facilities onboard if you need them. Most doctors are very experienced A&E consultants, or from other countries (often South Africa) where GP's train to very high trauma standards. They can literally deal with anything, and heli-vac you off the ship if it's life or death.
Varied entertainment- theatres with nightly shows, lounges with bands, tribute acts, classical concerts, cinemas etc.

or you can choose to stay in your cabin and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Views of the vast ocean..... wonderful.

Final point.... a 2 or 3 night cruise is an entirely different kettle of fish ..... disco all night, tequila shots all round, hen do, stag do's and everyone onboard for a massive party. Short cruises happen a few times a year and are great fun, but nothing like a longer cruise!!

There's also the fact that lots of people go on cruises from all walks of life so it would be unlikely that they were more 'posh' than you.

Who on earth asks how much anyone pays for anything? I never would and neither have I been asked (not about cruises because they are not my thing). It's far too personal. Surely most people would have paid much the same anyway.

Actual 'posh' people wouldn't be on a cruise. Dreadfully gauche. Very non-U.

Ah so you are just a snob then.

@vivainsomnia

Honestly claustrophobic central To give an idea, I went on a large but not largest fleet of the cruise line 2 years ago. I ran on the running track and did 18 laps. That was 10k! That's how large it is. It is so spacious and lage, it doesn't feel claustrophobic at all. You can always find secluded spaces. I'm very claustrophobic.

As for food quality, just like in land restaurant, you get what you pay for. I j'ai cruised with a few lines, and the difference in quality was flagrant. The best quality was Royal Caribbean. The food was just amazing, Co.patable to the Michelin stars restaurants I've gone to.

That works out at a total area of around 25,500 metres squared I believe, so around 3.5 football pitches, to put it into perspective. For how many people? Any more than a couple of hundred and that will not leave much secluded or quiet outdoor space to be alone, unless you hide in your cabin.
DetMcNulty · 02/03/2022 04:25

I don't understand how you can recognise how huge they are, and then not think about the energy and resources it must take to move them! I Or how something that massive must impact the natural environment and sea life.

CounsellorTroi · 02/03/2022 10:56

On smaller ships you can usually find a quiet spot on the promenade deck. The newer bigger ships don’t have them. Or you can get a cabin with a balcony so have your own outside space.

PollyPage · 03/03/2022 12:40

If you are ever lucky enough to charter, you wouldn't cruise. Its the economy class of sailing. I am not posh but live and work in a rich place and wouldn't ever want to cruise having been on 4 charters.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 03/03/2022 16:57

OOOh love a good cruise, the best holidays! Love the bigger ships the most (the ones with the ice skating rinks are amazing)

3dogsnorth · 03/03/2022 17:06

I have been on a cruise! The highlights, the couple of nights prior to and post cruise. Nice to have limited exposure to different places which you can choose to return to. For me it's a hard no! Crowded, enforced joviality, herded like sheep, below par food and service. Never again from me!

marvingale · 06/03/2022 23:38

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

CHIRIBAYA · 06/07/2022 12:42

Sitting watching the birds and dolphins, lovely, except there wont be any for much longer if we carry on polluting their environment. Cruise ships are catastrophic for the environment and anyone setting foot on one would have to not give the slightst shit about their impact. As long as they can carry on consuming eh? They should be banned.

TizerorFizz · 06/07/2022 15:44

The problem with banning is that @CHIRIBAYA so many ships are American and these holidays are cheap. They employ loads of people. We have just seen cruise ships in Alaska. We were on a 10 guest motor boat. The cost differential is stark. The cruisers, mostly, couldn’t afford the small boats and wouldn’t be interested in their surroundings anyway. They really are there for the ships facilities. They won’t get detailed knowledge of anywhere or anything. The number of ships should be reduced.

As for cruisers flying first class? In whose dreams is this? Most cruisers are from the USA and they just get a shuttle flight to the port. Most cruisers from here would never go business let alone first!
