Do you get jealous of people who go on cruises

Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

Hell no. It’s a petrified dish on water. Plus it’s way too many people in one place. Now if someone had a gathering on a yacht that’s a whole different story lol

XingMing · 19/02/2022 18:08

The idea hasn't appealed to me, yet although I'd prefer smaller ships and off-beat Swan Hellenic style destinations. DH and other people we know spend their working lives on board ships, so it's a busman's holiday for them. I like a ferry crossing to Europe though. Maybe in my dotage!

Fizbosshoes · 19/02/2022 18:09

I'm a bit envious of some friends who put pics on insta of their holiday in Mauritius while its blowing a gale and passing with rain here. The beach looked amazing. A cruise is something that doesn't appeal to me at all though.

Ohlalaohlala · 19/02/2022 18:09

No, I don’t get jealous. Doesn’t appeal to me in the slightest.

ImInStealthMode · 19/02/2022 18:10

@gogohm I travel around on holiday too, but at the speed of maybe a 3/4 centre over 2 weeks so we've a few nights in each place.

Staying in one hotel and taking a day-trip, on your own timeline, to somewhere nearby (that you could return to the next day if you felt like there was more to see) isn't the same as lots of short shore excursions on someone else's schedule and with a couple of thousand cruise-mates all herded to the same small range of activities.

ImInStealthMode · 19/02/2022 18:12

@supermoonrising

“Hell on Earth. Wouldn’t go if you paid me”.

… hey, guess what? you’ve just won two free tickets for a 14 day cruise!!

“Oh my God!!! Most amazing Holiday Ever!!!”

Still a hard no. I wouldn't have entered the competition.

Mewski · 19/02/2022 18:12

Never appealed to me in the slightest.

middlingnot · 19/02/2022 18:14

Blimey there's some misinformation on this thread, much of it highly amusing. I have mixed feelings about cruises and I think the ship you go on and destinations visited vary hugely. Choose with care.

I went on one recently and had a lovely spacious cabin with balcony so we sat watching the sea, birds, dolphins etc with a glass of wine. No compulsion to dress up or do activities or excursions if you didn't want to. We did our own thing. Never queued to get on or off. Every day was different. Covid precautions good. Tips were included so didn't have to think about that. Unpacked once and relaxed but saw and did lots onshore (independently) so now know where we might go back to for a longer holiday. Never slept so well in my life! It isn't too much to make a plan and get yourself back to the ship before it sails - you just need a watch and a brain. We explored far away from the port and sometimes found ourselves the only ones in that place.

However, cruises are terrible for the environment especially those huge ships. Some of your fellow passengers may not be your type but you can avoid them and that's the same on many holidays. I mean I was glad when we got off and may not ever do it again but it was fun.

SantaHat · 19/02/2022 18:14

I have serious ethical issues with cruise ships at the best of times and why anyone would consider one during a pandemic is beyond me.

KaptainKaveman · 19/02/2022 18:16

@PeakyBlender

A portable Petri dish? Not even if I had a gun to my head would I book one of those
This, in spades. Plus the general stereotype ( not that one should pay heed to such clichés ) of cruisers is that they are overweight, uncultured and indolent.

HTH.

Fizbosshoes · 19/02/2022 18:17

Still a hard no. I wouldn't have entered the competition.

Same. I wouldn't bother entering a competition if I didn't want the prize.Confused

Kennykenkencat · 19/02/2022 18:17

@Sportslady44

what about all the good things though lol the entertainment, the being at sea, the different countries!!!
The vomit.

Dh and his family love going on cruises.
It is my worse nightmare.

If I want to visit a country I want to visit it and not be tied to a schedule.

I was persuaded by Dh to go on a cruise in the hope I would enjoy it and then he could get to go cruising again

It was everything I thought with the added bonus of putting myself in a coma after over dosing. On sea sickness meds.

It reminded me of a luxury fitted out retirement home
They even had bingo and some comedian who had seen better days
It was cringy done in a lovely setting.

Like they had booked out the Savoy then decided to cater for coach parties and put on bingo, karaoke and the likes of Roy Chubby Brown (that is really dissing RCB as I think he would have been too expensive)

sleaf · 19/02/2022 18:18

Selfish fellow guests, especially those who don't clean their hands before using buffet utensils, and those who steal your table while you're at the buffet.

Sea days - any more than 2 in a row and cabin fever sets in. There is no escape.

Small bathrooms in the cabins.

The fear of capsizing.

Sailing in stormy conditions.

The hassle of fly cruises.

Dontbeamugallyourlifesucker · 19/02/2022 18:18

The biggest piece of advice I could give to you is DON'T GO!!! seasickness is a hugh problem.. It is so awful ... It makes you feel so ill.. Tiny cabins (no windows unless you pay £££ for a outer cabin ) .. Very little time on land when docked (They Will leave without you if your not on the boat on time.) Very Very expensive to eat in the restaurants. Getting dressed up all the time is a drag whenever you go down to eat etc in the evening. If 1 person comes down with stomach bug/sickness bug, every one gets it! All the tips to the staff mounts up! I live in the UK and had never been on a boat in the middle of the ocean... Its so so scary the way it gets tossed about on the waves and it really makes you feel sick! . Not enough loungers around the pool. Was glad to get home😂 I can't tell you enough what sea sickness is like! Imagine eating a nice lunch and you are full up.,then getting tipped upside down and shaken for an hour... That's the only way I can explain what I (and husband) felt like! The bloody drinks are so expensive also! 😬.. P. S.. Hope I haven't put you off! 😂😂

Lovemusic33 · 19/02/2022 18:21

Nope, I hate boats and the thought of sharing such a confined space with so many people scares me.

Classica · 19/02/2022 18:22

Windowless cabins sound a bit dismal.

Classica · 19/02/2022 18:22

I'd love a Jay-Z/Beyonce style yacht holiday though.

CharSiu · 19/02/2022 18:23

We have been on lots of different types of holidays including 2 cruises. DH backpacked round the world for almost 2 years between his degrees before I knew him.

We had an outside cabin with balcony, DH and DS loved the gym, I took dance lessons and joined the choir. We dined alone but chose to also table share some nights. Loved the quiz nights and really liked the pianist in the top cocktail lounge. We booked a 7 night cruise to Norway,. Black tie was one night of the 7 and there was a 24 hour casual buffet. The food was really decent. Overall we enjoyed the holiday so booked a 2 week med cruise the following year which was very enjoyable.

Zonder · 19/02/2022 18:23

Can't think of a holiday I'd less want to go on.

FourChimneys · 19/02/2022 18:23

I would rather stay home and pick my eyeballs out with a blunt knife.

My cousin and her DH go on three or four a year (in non Covid times) The photos I have seen look ghastly, all naff entertainment and just a glimpse of different countries without any understanding of the culture or political and geographical context.

GucciBear · 19/02/2022 18:23

I love cruises and have sailed many times. I doubt that I shall go again however, whilst Covid lurks. Windbeneathmywings Why do you spend so much time in the Loo!!??

A cruise would be my idea of hell. Only seeing tourist spots, not the 'real' country with real people, not being able to run or cycle for miles, never ending food, other people All The Time. Awful!

alltheseasons · 19/02/2022 18:25

@VioletLemon

My worst nightmare. Trapped on a floating bed of infectious diseases. Poor hygiene standards. No fresh food. No scenery. Lack of choice. I can't imagine why anyone would even consider a cruise any sort of luxury.
You've clearly never been on a cruise 😂
BestKnitterInScotland · 19/02/2022 18:25

My inlaws go on cruises.

That alone should be enough to put anyone off.
