Do you get jealous of people who go on cruises

Sportslady44 · 19/02/2022 16:37

Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

No, I think they sound ghastly.

WonderfulYou · 19/02/2022 18:26

I like the idea of visiting lots of different areas in one holiday but the actual cruise ship part would put me off.

I read an article of ‘what a cruise is really like’ along with photos and it was very crowded, the food wasn’t nice and the activities weren’t great.

I guess it depends on what kind of cruise it is but I imagine you’d have to pay quite a lot for it to be decent.

DontWantTheRivalry · 19/02/2022 18:27

I’m currently watching Jaws.
I watched Titanic yesterday.

People who choose to go in the sea, be it swimming or on a boat are crazy.

I am not jealous of people who go on cruises AT ALL!

SantaHat · 19/02/2022 18:30

This thread has reminded me of this story of a 65 year old trying to swim after a cruise ship after she missed getting back on it.

hiraffe · 19/02/2022 18:30

It was everything I thought with the added bonus of putting myself in a coma after over dosing. On sea sickness meds.

yikes!

Like they had booked out the Savoy then decided to cater for coach parties and put on bingo, karaoke and the likes of Roy Chubby Brown (that is really dissing RCB as I think he would have been too expensive)

Ouch!

😆

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 19/02/2022 18:32

PILs regularly go on cruises.

I’d rather stick hot pins in my eyes.

TolkiensFallow · 19/02/2022 18:32

I don’t, I’ve been on one and it’s constant “right you can visit this port for 3 hours before you must be back on the boat for another 3 days at sea - but don’t worry there’s butlins style entertainment readily available”.

However…I’m starting to get a bit interested in the Norwegian fjords ones purely because I think it might be cheaper than a holiday actually in Norway!

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 19/02/2022 18:33

Seasickness in bad weather. And you can’t get off.

Carpediem15 · 19/02/2022 18:33

Never been on an Ocean Cruise but love River Cruising. Rhine, Danube, Moselle etc with a small company so there are only about 100 onboard. No flashy dressing up, evening entertainment is usually up on deck watching the world go by or maybe local person comes onboard for the evening. They usually dock in the middle of towns so if we are there overninght able to go out for the evening if you want.
Can't wait for the next one.

HTH1 · 19/02/2022 18:34

Nope, I have never been on a cruise and wouldn’t fancy it (constant throwing up in a tiny room, boring whole days at sea and only small amounts of time in the places I would actually want to go to).

JuergenSchwarzwald · 19/02/2022 18:36

@PeakyBlender

A portable Petri dish? Not even if I had a gun to my head would I book one of those
Same here. Crazy idea - even without covid, you are quite likely to get Norovirus. No thanks.

Also cruises are massively damaging for the environment.

Georgyporky · 19/02/2022 18:36

Some of my best holidays have been cruises - RIVER cruises.

Posters are generalising, it does depend who you go with.
It's like condemning all package holidays because Tui all-in are crap, without sampling a small group package with, e.g. VJV ?

JuergenSchwarzwald · 19/02/2022 18:36

I agree river cruises would be a different experience entirely.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/02/2022 18:38

I’m starting to get a bit interested in the Norwegian fjords ones purely because I think it might be cheaper than a holiday actually in Norway!

I have considered this too!

The river cruises sound amazing carpediem19

Hugasauras · 19/02/2022 18:38

A river cruise does actually sound much more appealing.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/02/2022 18:38

Do people still get seasick, they have big stabilisers on the new ships today

It depends where you go; avoid notorious sea areas, pick a stateroom midships/low down and sickness is very unlikely unless you're the sort who gets sick in the bath

The only "negative" I agree with is the lack of time in ports, so I look on it as a chance to see if it's the sort of place I'd want to go back to for longer
Otherwise bring it on - though I had to giggle about the no fresh food / no scenery / poor hygiene remarks

buddylicious · 19/02/2022 18:39

I seriously wouldn't go on one if the holiday was free.

So many people in one place!

Told who you have to sit with at dinner!

Hate all the pretentiousness!

However, I know people who love them.

Each to their own!

Washermother33 · 19/02/2022 18:39

My mum was petrified of travelling but was happy to go on a cruise from the UK … it meant my parents got away and had experiences they wouldn’t have had otherwise . We’ve been a couple of times as a family with them - probably wouldn’t do it independently . We’ve found a couple of places in the world we will return to by plane .

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 19/02/2022 18:40

No no no.
Fear of sinking
Seasickness
People everywhere
Noisy entertainment
Bleurgh

DillDanding · 19/02/2022 18:40

I can’t think of anything worse.

To me, it’s a naff holiday for old folk. It’s like a more expensive version of staying somewhere like a campsite with entertainment.

My in laws bloody love a cruise, but they look horrendous to me.

KneadingKitty · 19/02/2022 18:40

I couldn't think of anything worse. I hate the sea though so that plays into it. Am I jealous of people who go abroad every year? Absolutely

PugInTheHouse · 19/02/2022 18:40

Sorry OP, can't help you. They are amazing, never been ill on one and dine about 150 nights in total. Kids facilities and entertainment is brilliant. There have been several famous singers, comedians, West End stars on the ones we have been on, also the pros from Strictly. Rarely crap entertainment.

They are anything but overcrowded, especially at the moment. We are going on 3 this year (basically cancellations from the last 2 years).

We never go on the cheap Thompson style cruises though. I have never fancied those at all.

PugInTheHouse · 19/02/2022 18:41

*done not dine

Fupoffyagrasshole · 19/02/2022 18:41

Instead of getting jealous and wondering about it - why don’t you just go on one and find out

PugInTheHouse · 19/02/2022 18:42

There is a HUGE amount of misinformation on this thread!
