Only an idiot would complain about this. NZ has had minimal Covid deaths due to Arden's policies. Any by woke, you are referring to people caring about something other than themselves, since when is this a bad thing?

iloathhousework · 15/02/2022 07:14

@SecondSwitchNZ
Good grief! You still in NZ? Thought you would have returned to the UK by now seems you are so unhappy with life here.

You conveniently forgot to mention that there was a cyclone with a shit tonne of rain that has also contributed to the wet, sodden and muddy state of the parliament grounds.

The police reported that they were concerned about videos of children appearing to be playing in/walking around in feces.

So egging 17 year old school girls; spitting at people; writing violent slogans, such as “hang ‘‘em high”, blocking streets (therefore restricting access for emergency vehicles) and refusing to move cars; camping in the university resulting in students not be able to get on campus; taking off clothes, rubbing oil over themselves and then throwing themselves at the police is all pretty respectable behaviours is it?? Obviously, we have a different definition of “respect”.

As for Jacinda “having blood on her hands” what an hysterical drama queen of a statement. You might feel a bit better if you took it down a notch or two.

Woeismethischristmas · 15/02/2022 07:14

@EmmaH2022

Jackie why are billionaires buying NZ passports please?
Not Jackie but isn’t New Zealand the country most likely to survive the coming shitstorms of climate change and geo political unrest.

Just in case they haven’t sorted out a posh paradise in orbit for the billionaires.

Polyanthus2 · 15/02/2022 07:19

Due to it being a long way from anywhere therefore less likely to have hoards of refugees arriving.

Moneypennysfreedomfund · 15/02/2022 07:19

@CheekyHobson

giving exceptions to the rich and famous at the border killed their credibility in my eyes.

Do you understand that the small number of exceptions made for the 'rich and famous' were because their arrival meant large-scale events and film productions that contributed substantially to the livelihoods of people living here could proceed?

As a New Zealander, do you truly believe that Benedict Cumberbatch shouldn't have been able to come here for the purposes of enabling a $30m+ film to be made since presumably a citizen couldn't come back for a short visit in his place? How would you explain to a local who got to work for 6 months because he was allowed to come here?

Yes I am, some of those let through simply hunkered down and rode out the majority of the pandemic here after borders closed, no economic incentive for NZ at all ( three very wealthy families arrived and live very near me in a pleasant tourist/holiday hotspot).

Some who were let in to headline events, erm it’s a pandemic, are mass gatherings a brilliant idea? Allowing in cricket teams, really… it’s sport … respected medical personnel were denied places in MIQ…. But film crews, entertainment industry personnel took precedence….. it was wrong from start to finish and yes making films in a pandemic is irresponsible if it means foreign film crews and stars are shipped in as an exception.

It’s far more complex and hypocritical than you are suggesting and can we drop the ‘ Do you understand’ rather patronising imo…

AlternativePerspective · 15/02/2022 07:24

The vaccine mandate is without a doubt divisive. There is plenty of argument here in fact that says nobody should be forced to have vaccinations, and in the same breath people are praising NZ for their stance on vaccines.

Thing is people need to look beyond the deaths and the infections, and look at the impact going forward. The economy has taken a massive hit, people are divided on vaccines, personally I think they should be compulsory wherever we live, but others clearly don’t agree.

As for the protesters, spraying them with water and playing music to them is pathetic and makes the NZ government look a bit ridiculous. And while it wasn’t JA who made the decisions, the buck stops with her. The protesters are disruptive, vile, and are causing mass chaos, so playing Baby shark and spraying them with water just looks like a bit of a joke rather tha actually wanting to deter them or do anything about the existing protesters who are there.

Hadjab · 15/02/2022 07:27

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

Is there nothing you lot won’t squeeze the word ‘woke’ into? I’m sick to fuck if hearing this word. It’s completely meaningless.
Absolutely this! @Radyward you lost what little credibility you had at that point.
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 15/02/2022 07:39

Was it woke water they were sprayed with? That stuff is toxic.

OhWhyNot · 15/02/2022 07:40

Splits within the populations ideas on vaccine mandates are going to be a problem for many countries and if you have a liberal/left government it’s an issue of not uniting the country

But then that is the same for our Conservatives as their core beliefs are personal responsibility and less intrusion from the state. Johnson has stuck to this (perhaps under duress) but this has seemed to please both left and right in the UK

I was shocked to read what is happening in Canada but I think this will be an issue in many countries

Ginandplatonic · 15/02/2022 07:45

@CheekyHobson great. You allow in famous wealthy people to make movies. Hooray. My husband can’t get over there to see his dying elderly mother, but who cares as long as movies get made eh? Not you clearly.

Yeahthat · 15/02/2022 07:45

@GreenLunchBox

Yes, I'm taking a descriptive rather than prescriptive approach and describing how the word is actually used, since the PP was feigning not to know.

Rather like your use of the word, "brigade" - which I'm sure you didn't use to refer to a subdivision of soldiers - word meanings evolve.

Got that?

TacCat49 · 15/02/2022 07:55

Radyward.... What the hell are you on about. Jacinda Ardern is the elected Prime Minister of NZ she is not a St. To me your post insinuates that she sprayed the protesters with water, she didn't. She politely asks citizens to get vaccinated. I have never heard her refer to the unvaccinated as loonies. Of course there are many people who don't like her style of politics but you will get that with any country leader. We are not in lock down but quarantine is necessary for people coming into NZ but these restrictions are easing. I don't need to come to NZ for work/holiday because I was born and bred here and I wouldn't want to live any where else in the world. I could write pages in response to your posting but I won't. Please get your facts correct.

OhWhyNot · 15/02/2022 07:56

Just want to add I do not think our government has handled the pandemic well at all but not having vaccine mandates has swerved an issue that many governments are facing

AndAsIfByMagic · 15/02/2022 07:58

I have observed that meaningless and rather stupid rants on MN are often poorly punctuated.

Polyanthus2 · 15/02/2022 08:00

Like we all know, women are held up to higher expectations than men.
A criticism on Jacinda - what about a whinge about Trudeau?

DryOldCaper · 15/02/2022 08:02

there is little knowledge work in New Zealand, and I had the choice to go on the dole, or make something better of myself.
Leaving aside the tacit insult to all NZ-based knowledge workers, you must be in a rather specialised field if 'the dole' or 'overseas' were your only possible work futures.

Hmm, quite!

Blatant place-marking to come back to later.

My work is across the road from the protesters. We Wellingtonians - pretty much unscathed by Omicron - wish they’d just leave, instead of creating a super-spreader event.

CheekyHobson · 15/02/2022 08:08

Yes I am, some of those let through simply hunkered down and rode out the majority of the pandemic here after borders closed, no economic incentive for NZ at all ( three very wealthy families arrived and live very near me in a pleasant tourist/holiday hotspot).

Are you saying that you are aware of non-NZ citizens bringing no economic incentive to NZ who were permitted to enter NZ for no valid reason and just hunker down for a holiday? You should take that one straight to the papers, they'll be all over it.

Some who were let in to headline events, erm it’s a pandemic, are mass gatherings a brilliant idea? Allowing in cricket teams, really… it’s sport …

Seems like some people won't allow the government to have 'gotten it right' no matter what they did. NZers widely rejoiced in the fact that MIQ allowed us to live mostly normally (including mass gatherings) for two years while the rest of the world was going through enormous disruption and death, but now all of a sudden it was irresponsible for the government to make the most of the fact that MIQ was allowing us mass gatherings – not one of which to my knowledge resulted in an outbreak?

respected medical personnel were denied places in MIQ…. But film crews, entertainment industry personnel took precedence…

Not sure who you are referring to here but again I'm going to suggest that no matter how respected a doctor is, probably not one of them was going to help bring $30m into the NZ economy with them. Film and sport are two significant New Zealand money-earners, of course the government gave some precedence to sustaining these industries over regular citizens who like another poster in this thread are put out that they couldn't pop back to NZ for a visit more than once during the last two years.

it was wrong from start to finish and yes making films in a pandemic is irresponsible if it means foreign film crews and stars are shipped in as an exception.
This is just ludicrous denialism, there was nothing irresponsible about continuing economic activities during a time when Covid was actually eliminated from the community for months on end. If bringing in a handful of foreign film stars allowed hundreds of New Zealand workers to sustain their incomes for months during a time when economies around the world were being impacted and many foreign film productions were at a standstill, then it was an absolute no-brainer.

It’s far more complex and hypocritical than you are suggesting and can we drop the ‘ Do you understand’ rather patronising imo
I think it's actually far more complex that you are acknowledging or patronisation alert appear to understand. You seem to want it to be as simple as 'Doctors and NZers good, foreign entertainers and sports teams bad' but right throughout the government has had to balance the scales of health and economy and that means making exceptions that deliver a significant net benefit to the people they are serving rather than sticking to bureaucratic 'Computer says no' black and white rules.

Moonlette · 15/02/2022 08:10

I think they did amazing during covid but this period was always going to be tricky, especially as the rest of the world starts to open up and they're not in a place to.

Theluggage15 · 15/02/2022 08:11

Of course she’s woke, she applauded a male taking a female’s space in the olympics and as for caring about New Zealanders hahaha. She’s increased poverty and forced other countries to look after the New Zealanders that are overseas, the countries have had to issue emergency visas because they’re not allowed back in their own country. She puts making shitty movies above people seeing dying relatives.

Fimofriend · 15/02/2022 08:16

Hey OP.
Did you mean for your post to sound so misogynistic?

Hoppinggreen · 15/02/2022 08:30

Yes, we are just soooo lucky to have St Boris here instead
None of that woke nonsense

LakieLady · 15/02/2022 08:31

*There are a group of liberal progressive world leaders who don't seem to hesitate much over civil liberties. Measures like vaccine mandates were brought in with very little real discussion about the serious implications, there were politicians who claimed that anyone who questioned these, even if they were vaccinated and pro-vaccination, were anti-vaxxers.

It's disturbing to see this, where basic rights related to citizenship were so easily swept aside as if they were nothing and it wasn't acknowledged that it was a serious thing to do indeed - mainly because to have acknowledged that was seen to give legitimacy to those who argued it wasn't justified, and that wasn't allowed*

People often talk about rights and civil liberties as though they were absolute, rather than relative.

There are whole rafts of legislation that restrict the rights of individuals to protect others. No-one would say now that restricting the rights of people to get pissed and drive their cars was a bad thing, or banning smoking in pubs and workplaces, but these were regarded as infringements of liberty by the "it's a human right" loons when they were proposed. The far right complain about their right to be racist and homophobic being eroded, ffs .

There's always a trade off between "rights". Politicians have to decide which rights are most important, and often that involves which benefits the most people: one right, or a restriction, which confers other rights.
@Wordleone Our death figures are still amazingly low. We had about 53 people die and even though we have a much lower population of around 5.3 million, scaling roughly to the UK population by multiplying by 13 this would have corresponded to a UK death toll of 689. The UK death toll is around 160,000.

689....thats about the same as the nz suicide rate for last year. Jacinda has blood on her hands and needs to be held accountable.
You do know that suicide rates dropped from 2019 to 2020 and from 2020 to 2021?
