@Yeahthat - can you please give me the definition of the word ‘woke’. I originally heard it years ago when if was a US term used to describe when people were aware of racial injustice. But in more recent times I’ve since heard it used in multiple contexts to the point I suspect it’s just a meaningless collection of letters certain people just yell because they heard someone else say it. It’s like people thought ‘PC gone mad!’ was too 90s then ‘Snowflake’ was too early noughts so this is the new one.
Exactly this!

grapewine · 15/02/2022 01:08

Nz is now so woke no one with any brain or indepent thought will go there to holiday / work.

And this is why your post shouldn't be taken seriously.

KneadingKitty · 15/02/2022 01:16

Sprayed with WATER? Heaven forbid! I can't think of any daily tasks that involves exactly that!

EmmaH2022 · 15/02/2022 01:19

Jackie thank you, that's interesting, I had no idea.

larkstar · 15/02/2022 01:24

I wish she was running this country. She's compassionate, down to earth, relatable, speaks well and from the heart as far as I can judge.

DePfeffoff · 15/02/2022 01:30

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

Is there nothing you lot won’t squeeze the word ‘woke’ into? I’m sick to fuck if hearing this word. It’s completely meaningless.
This!
SmorgasBorb · 15/02/2022 01:47

What do you mean 'no sign of lifting restrictions' there are little if any restrictions here in NZ. The border is about to open.

Which restrictions do you mean?

Also Labour have gone down a bit in the polls (not 'plummeted') but they still have enough to govern outright still. That is almost unheard of. Her leadership status is still far and away beyond NAT and ACT.

It's mainly misogynist men or their handmaidens who don't like her because they don't like capable women.
@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

If I were to try to define it then I'd say that it would be something close to (but not exactly) the Chinese term "Baizuo":

"Baizuo" is a popular political epithet commonly used on the Chinese Internet. The literal translation is "white left" which refers to western white liberal leftists. According to Chinese political scientist Chenchen Zhang, the word "Baizuo" refers to those who "only care about topics such as immigration, minorities, LGBT rights and the environment", but lack a concept of "real problems in the real world". It is also used to describe those "hypocritical humanitarians who advocate political correctness just to satisfy their own sense of moral superiority". Some used this word to indicate those "ignorant and arrogant westerners" who "pity the rest of the world and think they are saviours".
Look up the dictionary definition. It means 'alert to social injustice, usually racism'. Yes it's been co-opted by the GB news brigade to silence people trying to get equality. Also adopted by 'feminists' on Mumsnet trying to ingratiate themselves with the right wing crowd in their single-minded crusade against trans people, happy to throw black women under the bus

Topseyt · 15/02/2022 02:01

You don't sound as though you have any clue what you are talking about.

I can't keep up

I thought these restrictions were still in place

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-60100369

I thought cloth masks weren't allowed, it had to be FFP something

Also I thought there was a mandate for vaccinating certain workers.

Yes, basic infection control mitigations - that protect the freedom of life, health, and long term economy - are (for now) still in place.

Just like seat belts and speeding limits - mitigations that help to restrict our freedom to die or become horrifically injured in a car accident.

How much longer she can hold out against the let the bodies pile up and get disabled crew, I don't know.

China will be the last man standing eventually. In twenty years time, when the full extent of Long Covid damage becomes apparent, only then will people everywhere else wish they too had listened to the science.

And this was from before Covid, since then many more have bought NZ passports to get away from the consequences of inequality and division they benefit from and often actively contribute to.
Yes this. Although sadly it's already started to spread - the inequality and division - in NZ. Eg. Auckland house prices (rents as well as buying).

MangyInseam · 15/02/2022 02:31

There are a group of liberal progressive world leaders who don't seem to hesitate much over civil liberties. Measures like vaccine mandates were brought in with very little real discussion about the serious implications, there were politicians who claimed that anyone who questioned these, even if they were vaccinated and pro-vaccination, were anti-vaxxers.

It's disturbing to see this, where basic rights related to citizenship were so easily swept aside as if they were nothing and it wasn't acknowledged that it was a serious thing to do indeed - mainly because to have acknowledged that was seen to give legitimacy to those who argued it wasn't justified, and that wasn't allowed.

That's a serious turn of events in a liberal democracy.

Here in Canada we now have a PM who has, for the first time ever, invoked the Emergency Measures act, because of protests and blockades - an act which is intended to be used for situations involving national security. Without having tried to even talk to the people involved or address their concerns. It's very typical of him, he tends to assume his personal views are the epitome of Canadian Values - those who think differently are, therefor, uncanadian. I get the impression that Jacinda is very similar.

lborgia · 15/02/2022 02:31

I knew from your title "St Jacinta" that you had a specific view in mind. You're not asking a question, you're spouting rhetoric.

Have you been paid? What a strange and sad post.

CheekyHobson · 15/02/2022 02:35

What!!! spraying protesters including women and childrem with water outside parliament

As noted, it wasn't actually the PM doing this. Was also followed by a two-day storm so presumably God agreed with the decision.

Classing all protestors as loony anti vaxers.
Again, she has never actually said this, but it's well-established that a number of the anti-mandate protestors have already given up and gone home since the protest has been largely taken over by actual loony anti-vaxers, neo-Nazis and various other conspiracy theorists spitting on passers-by and calling for nooses to be strung up.

no sign of liftimg restrictions ' quite the opposite.
Yes, mitigations such as masks and vaccine passports still in place and supported by the majority of New Zealanders, however NZ hasn't been in 'lockdown' since December last year

Polls plummeting.
Completely ordinary for a mid-term government but also polls recently bouncing so who knows.

She is completely nightmarish tho 53 deaths is amazing.
You're swinging rather hard on the sucks/rocks pendulum here.

Nz is now so woke no one with any brain or indepent thought will go there to holiday / work.
Let's find out in 12 months' time, eh. One thing this pandemic has really brought home to me is that many, many people have zero ability to play a long game.

Poor kiwis
We're actually pretty fine, thanks, particularly the large numbers of us who weren't killed by Covid during the last two years, so please don't spend any more time fretting.

SquirrelG · 15/02/2022 02:37

You are talking a load of rubbish! Labour/Jacinda have gone down a bit in the polls, but hardly "plummeting" - and none of the other parties are doing very well. The protesters are hardly a cohesive bunch, and people are getting sick of them disrupting their lives. You needn't feel sorry for us, we are okay. Many of us would far rather be here than in the UK at the moment.

FenceFuckery · 15/02/2022 02:51

Thanks for your concern but we are all fine over here. The only restrictions we have are on events over 100 people. Masks need to be worn in shops, but cloth ones are fine. The main issue (a tiny minority of) people are kicking off about are vaccine mandates for key workers such as teachers, health care etc. Outside of this, we are upwards of 95% double vaxxed, with half of those now boosted too.

As for the protestors, all the music and water was the Speaker of the House’s decision, and he’s being slated a bit for that. Nothing at all to do with the PM. The protestors are also not exactly being pleasant. Lots of stories of local residents and shop owners who are being harassed as soon as they step outside. It’s the kids who they are dragging along with them I feel the most sorry for.

CoalTit · 15/02/2022 02:54

...she was one of the World Economic Forum trained "Young Global Leaders" (or Young Leaders of Tomorrow as it was then called) like Trudeau and Macron. All use the same playbook.
Vladimir Putin went through the program too, according to Klaus Schwab

Mypathtriedtokillme · 15/02/2022 02:57

Oh no not water! In the middle of summer. How will they cope??
Do you think it might if been “homeopathic water” so now everyone is vaccinated?

pollyglot · 15/02/2022 02:59

Cheeky Hobson - you are my heroine!
Life has gone on, for those outside Auckland, much the same as always, except for the mask-wearing and the vax passes. And of course, the overseas travel, but who would want to leave paradise to travel into the pit of hell? There was a travel bubble with Australia for a while, to allow families to catch up, though it didn't last long because of the craziness in Melbourne and NSW. We've had two amazing summers, beautiful weather, except for when God decrees a storm to dissuade loony protesters, we can feed ourselves, we're an energy-rich nation, most (though not all, I agree) businesses have squeaked through by the skin of their teeth, the health and education systems have been saved by the heroic efforts of hospital and school staff, and the "team of 5 million" has pulled together well for 2 years now. Yes, the MIQ arrangements were not only unfair, but also badly run, but as Cheeky says, it's a matter of playing the long game, and not going for instant gratification. And good leadership. Unlike that embarrassing, doughy excuse for a prime minister, who condemned Brits to a tragically high death rate by his vacillation and incompetence.

RantyAunty · 15/02/2022 03:01

Back away from the tipple and murdoch

Mypathtriedtokillme · 15/02/2022 03:03

Everyone I know in NZ has mentioned now fucked Australia’s response now is and how could they fail 1st nations people so badly.

Most kiwis think the people protesting are loons. (Like the ones in Aussie are)

They can enjoy their personal Barry Manilow concert while getting a shower.

SmorgasBorb · 15/02/2022 03:17

@Radyward appears to spend their time finding ways to raise personal grievances against The Prime Minister on Mumsnet and state how awful it is in NZ, how the economy is surely fucked, how martyred we all are, how silly we are for being 'hysterical' and how no one will ever want to visit or work here ever again.

It's okay everyone they've been here on holiday.

Wordleone · 15/02/2022 03:51

We're not locked down! We can travel where we want in the country. People are already planning overseas trips for later in the year when we won't have the strict border controls. You could always go overseas from NZ but the difficulty was in getting back in. Sure, some big events were cancelled because of omicron but we can eat out, go shopping, go to the hairdresser, drink in bars, use public transport and so on provided you have a vaccine pass. It is hard at the moment to get a place in managed isolation if you're an ex-pat but we're picking up huge numbers of infected people at the border and we are talking about people who chose to live outside NZ. Special flights were arranged to bring people back from Australia and so on.

I'm not so sure you'd like the protesters up close either. There were beautiful lawns and a slide for children in the grounds of Parliament and people enjoyed eating their lunch there - it's now a mass of churned mud and human faeces and that's not even dwelling on the goat. Given the vaccination rate for the country as a whole - 94% for over 12 year olds - I don't think there is a lot of sympathy for the protesters. Most Wellingtonians heartily wish they'd go home. The amount of rain that fell over the weekend also dwarfed anything the Parliamentary sprinkler system could produce.

I'm not quite sure why people in the UK are so interested and reporting the comments of random acquaintances. Our death figures are still amazingly low. We had about 53 people die and even though we have a much lower population of around 5.3 million, scaling roughly to the UK population by multiplying by 13 this would have corresponded to a UK death toll of 689. The UK death toll is around 160,000.
