What things are you guilty of nicking from hotels?

I'm definitely guilty of stealing things from hotel rooms. I never go for anything overly big, usually teabags, toilet roll and the toiletries when I leave.
What are you guilty of nicking from hotels or your workplace?
@Sparklingbrook it is not a full pack up. Just a roll or couple of slices of bread with some filling and an apple. Don't you carry a bag with water etc when you are out for the day? Because I do, it is not a big deal to have a bit of food as well.
I just buy fresh as and when I need food, I don’t carry any around with me.

Balaboostah · 15/02/2022 06:44

A bit off topic but those hotel/plane amenities are great for homeless/domestic abuse shelters where people may arrive with nothing. I always collect them and then donate them.

freshcarnation · 15/02/2022 06:54

We stayed at Gleneagles hotel decades ago and DH loved the towelling bathrobe. So I spoke to housekeeping and bought a new one for him. He had it for years til it fell apart.

You never take a packed lunch or a picnic for a day out? You must realise not everyone can afford to eat out all the time though even if you can

If I’m having a picnic it’s in the car in the cool bag. I would have made the picnic at home from stuff I bought from an actual shop. I do realise that not everyone can eat out. Obviously. But not sure making a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet is the way to go.

Not sure how it's much different to taking some things from your house to eat later in the day which is a normal thing to do in my world. Even my car wealthier friends who could certainly afford to eat out tend to bring food and snacks in a rucksack on a day out.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2022 07:48

That's what this thread is all about. It is different. IMO taking food from the hotel breakfast buffet for another meal later on is completely different to making a picnic at home from stuff in the fridge.

liveforsummer · 15/02/2022 07:50

Not when the issue you appear to have is the carrying food around with you rather than the actual taking of food (that will end up being chucked away at the end of service if you didn't take it)

I don't really have an issue TBF. I won't be making a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet any time soon, but if that's what people want to do then it's up to them. (Not sure about the chucking away bit I guess that would depend on the hotel) I don't routinely carry food about with me, let alone sandwiches. I don't know anyone who does.
woodhill · 15/02/2022 11:03

@Puzzledandpissedoff

I've never taken anything from the breakfast buffet for later in the day because I'd buy something to eat

Depends where you are though - I once did it on a cruise ship (although even then it was only a couple of cookies and a banana) because I simply wouldn't risk getting food in the destination

OTOH I have a friend who regularly does the full pack-up thing, even down to a dessert and a drink, but luckily I've never travelled with her

I've taken fruit to eat later or the odd muffin. I can't eat too much in the morning
Blossomtoes · 15/02/2022 11:20

@Monopolyiscrap

Wrap it in napkins. And I do not do it sneakily. Staff don't care. I would never do it in a small independent hotel or B and B. But large chain hotels, staff do not care if you do this.
Trust me, your fellow guests will be judging you. The staff may not say anything but they will too. Such low rent behaviour.

Trust me, they won’t Grin One of two might perhaps, but they’re really not worth bothering about.

DrSbaitso · 15/02/2022 12:23

I imagine they know that, and if it bothered them, they wouldn't do it. The fact that so many people have seen it being done suggests it isn't generally very cloak-and-dagger.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2022 12:24

This is all making me want to book a hotel stay and properly study guest behaviour. Grin
I want to see a family production line of lunch sandwich making at breakfast.

DearlyBeloathed · 15/02/2022 12:25

For taking a muffin for later? I really doubt it.

Monopolyiscrap · 15/02/2022 12:25

@Blossomtoes I don't care at all if any guests judge me. Why would I?

@Sparklingbrook I can afford to eat out. But as I said after hotel breakfast and evening dinner, I want something small for lunch. I don't want to hunt around for an overpriced roll and apple from a shop. It takes time and is not any nicer than from a decent breakfast buffet. I also would not be bringing days old picnics from home.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2022 12:28

@Monopolyiscrap, we must do staying in a hotel differently I guess. I never have dinner at the hotel. I never have to hunt for food. Re the picnic that would be for when going on a picnic from home so not sure what your 'days old' refers to.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2022 12:30

If I wanted a picnic lunch when going out for the day from a hotel I would ask if they did packed lunches.

Monopolyiscrap · 15/02/2022 12:34

@Sparklingbrook I do not have dinner in the hotel. I do have an evening meal out. Is that not normal?
A hotel providing a packed lunch would provide something more substantial than I want. Why would I pay for food I do not want and would not eat?
I do not think this is about practicalities. I think you just think this is vulgar and common. But I do not care what anyone thinks.
And lots of people do it. I see others doing it.

Radziwill · 15/02/2022 12:36

I genuinely can't see the difference between stealing from a hotel and stealing from a shop, or from someone's house. Can someone explain it to me?

Monopolyiscrap · 15/02/2022 12:37

And of course if you are buying lunch you have to look for it. It might not be hard, but you have to find a sandwich bar or Pret a Manger and spend time buying it. Or deal with long lunchtime queues at cafes. Life is too short to do that for an indifferent sandwich.

Blossomtoes · 15/02/2022 12:52

I think you just think this is vulgar and common

You said it. So you do know what people think of you. And you obviously care or you wouldn’t spend so much time defending it.

DearlyBeloathed · 15/02/2022 12:54

And i'll continue to happily take a bread roll for later 😂

SirChenjins · 15/02/2022 13:00

She also very clearly said But I do not care what anyone thinks. Did you miss that?

You are putting words into my mouth now. I have not said anything of the sort. Grin
I have never even seen anyone doing it in RL even though apparently 'lots of people do it' and it comes across loud and clear that you don't care what people think.
