What things are you guilty of nicking from hotels?

I'm definitely guilty of stealing things from hotel rooms. I never go for anything overly big, usually teabags, toilet roll and the toiletries when I leave.
What are you guilty of nicking from hotels or your workplace?

@Monopolyiscrap

I take lunch from the breakfast buffet. And I do not eat bread and jam.
I’ve watched people doing this.
Elphame · 14/02/2022 22:26

No I wouldn't dream of it.

I run holiday accommodation and as a very small business every theft really hurts. Not just financially but in the time taken to source and replace the items.

Yes they are nice things. It's taken me a lot of time and effort to find them for my guests to enjoy. It's soul destroying when they "walk".

I sincerely hope flowervest never chooses to stay with me. I have lovely towels.

Sparklingbrook · 14/02/2022 22:28

@MuffinStrops do they bring down sandwich bags and tupperware or stuff it in their handbags/pockets?
I have never seen it in real life, bit would love to.

Yes they do 🤣

Monopolyiscrap · 14/02/2022 22:34

Wrap it in napkins. And I do not do it sneakily. Staff don't care.
I would never do it in a small independent hotel or B and B. But large chain hotels, staff do not care if you do this.

Sparklingbrook · 14/02/2022 22:34

I must be going to the wrong hotels @MuffinStrops. Sad If you've got a large family that's a lot of sandwiches to make while trying to eat breakfast.

MuffinStrops · 14/02/2022 22:37

Tends to be hotels abroad with large buffets.

Monopolyiscrap · 14/02/2022 22:40

No plenty of hotels in Britain do good buffets. Ones catering to international visitors tend to have better selections of meat and cheese and often smoked salmon as well.

Oh, right. Only heard of it on the Disneyland threads. It wouldn't be something I would do.
DreamTheMoors · 14/02/2022 22:45

I once stayed six weeks in Perth in a lovely hotel. The cleaning ladies scolded me for not taking the complimentary shampoo/conditioner every day.
That would mean that I would’ve had to have taken 84 little bottles of hair products home that I never used.
I made great friends with those Aussie ladies tho.

@EatYourVegetables

The walls, if they’re thicker than ours. The bath if it’s nice and big.

The art.

Once I stole a bellboy but I’m older and married now.

I've never taken anything from the breakfast buffet for later in the day because I'd buy something to eat

Depends where you are though - I once did it on a cruise ship (although even then it was only a couple of cookies and a banana) because I simply wouldn't risk getting food in the destination

OTOH I have a friend who regularly does the full pack-up thing, even down to a dessert and a drink, but luckily I've never travelled with her

That’s quite a good reason for doing it. And possibly everyone in the ship doing the same? In a hotel in the UK not so much.
I would not want to travel with ‘full pack up friend’ 😂

alesia · 14/02/2022 23:28
@NannyOggsWhiskyStash you can help yourselves to towels and keep topping them up so it’s not like you check in with a set amount and are expected to check out with that same amount. So there’s no charges or anyone getting in touch about anything.

Tbh I expect the hotels know that some people might take things such as pillows/towels so aren’t too bothered🤷‍♀️ I probably would have just taken the robe and dealt with any consequences if it was that nice
How shocking! I'm in hospitality and certainly wouldn't want you to stay in my place. And certainly I don't expect someone to take pillows/towels or anything..

Avonandice · 14/02/2022 23:28

I work in a hotel and people usually take any of the toiletries in the room, shower caps etc. Tea tray usually stripped.

If you want extras ask for it when you see us on corridors but please dont strip stuff of the trollies as having to go to refill the stuff thats taken cuts into the time we get to service rooms.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/02/2022 23:30

'Fraid not, Sparklingbrook - some of them even tried the street food and that's not taking into account the buffet we were taken to, complete with waiters in uniforms that looked as if they'd been in a slaughterhouse Shock

Needless to say, the outbreak of food poisoning onboard was massive ...

Monopolyiscrap · 14/02/2022 23:34

@Sparklingbrook it is not a full pack up. Just a roll or couple of slices of bread with some filling and an apple. Don't you carry a bag with water etc when you are out for the day? Because I do, it is not a big deal to have a bit of food as well.

alesia · 14/02/2022 23:39

@flowervest75

it's just that it's possible for dishonest guests to betray their trust in basic human decency and get away with it.

I never said it was the right thing to do but it’s a couple of towels not £100 grand from the safe. Clearly no one has taken anything from a hotel that they’re not supposed too

How is it different from taking towels from a shop without paying?? Same thing - called stealing!

Oh no! 🙈

One of the worst holidays I've ever had was an AI and at breakfast there were some families that took so much food you couldn't see the table. It was literally piled high with mainly breads, croissants, pastries etc....but I'm not sure what for.Confused They didn't eat it all, and they didn't take it away to eat either. Every day the waiters would come and clear a load of food off their table and presumably throw it away. It seemed very bizarre and wasteful.

I have to admit when I went on my first holiday abroad I was quite young and skint and had an ED. My and a friend did used to take a roll and an apple from breakfast, to eat at lunch so we wouldn't have to a) buy any more food or b) find somewhere that sold boring/"safe" enough food that we would eat. We barely ate anything at breakfast though so were probably not consuming any more food than the average guest.

Did Ross from friends write originate this post?

However, only thing I’ve ever “stole” was when biacoff biscuits were a new thing and they had them in our room. Instant love, leading to when coming across room service trolly the next day a couple more “fell” in my bag.

I stole an ashtray from a restaurant. Months after I'd taken it, I noticed on the bottom was printed "Stolen from - restaurant name" Grin

WTAF! If you can afford a night in a hotel you can afford a pack of bloody lightbulbs
