To expect Tesco delivery to be on time

So I know this is a minor issue. But - I pay £4.50 for a one hour slot for my Tesco delivery.

About 50% of the time I get a call on my mobile about an hour earlier from a stroppy delivery driver telling me he is at my house and there is no one home. I remind them of the time of my delivery every single time and they still seem to think I am in the wrong.

I always try my best to be home half an hour before my slot, but my weekends are busy and I pay extra for the one hour slot for a reason.

Am I the only one this happens to - it’s the ride attitude that really gets me - as if I am in the wrong to not be home one hour before I ordered the delivery.

Trivial

Get over it

RedCandyApple · 12/02/2022 22:04

They never call me if they are going to be early/late.

My last one was half an hour early, no call, I didn’t mind because I was in but annoying if I’m not as I booked for a specific time for a reason. Like last week the only slot I could get for a week was 4pm I get back from the school run at quarter to so I was worried I might not be home in time even though my slot was 4 anyway, once they did this to me came early and I wasn’t in so left and then when I called Tesco’s to complain the driver had lied and told them he was at my house at the right time and I wasn’t in Angry

alexdgr8 · 12/02/2022 22:05

so knowing this always happens, why don't you make sure you are back earlier, or that someone else is in to take delivery, or else just adjust the time slot.
so if you want it to come at 6pm, order it for 7pm.
but then there is the risk that they might not actually appear until 7pm that day...
does it really matter ? really ?

Myyearmytime · 12/02/2022 22:05

Just book a early slot before you go out

lkaist · 12/02/2022 22:05

I have the opposite problem with ASDA, always late, it's very annoying! Why give a time to pick if they aren't going to stick to it 🤷‍♀️

lkaist · 12/02/2022 22:06

Love how people are thinking you should change instead of Tesco actually delivering when they say they will - and a time slot you pay for 🤷‍♀️

shrunkenhead · 12/02/2022 22:08

Just get home early.

SickAndTiredAgain · 12/02/2022 22:08

so knowing this always happens, why don't you make sure you are back earlier

Because she has paid for the more expensive one hour slot precisely so she doesn’t have to wait around longer? Which she would have to do, as she hasn’t said this always happens, but happens about half the time.
Tesco shouldn’t offer it if it’s regularly not achievable, and the delivery drivers certainly shouldn’t be rude about it.

Yerroblemom1923 · 12/02/2022 22:09

It's annoying if you're heading a nap

swampytiggaa · 12/02/2022 22:09

I have a note on my account that the delivery is not to be early. They do take notice of that. Slipped a bit in first lockdown when a driver turned up early then said obviously I’d be in anyway… I pointed out that actually I was working in a supermarket so wasn’t furloughed or working from home and I’d booked my delivery to fit around my shifts. Helped I was wearing my Morrisons uniform at the time 😂😂

So basically get a note on your account. There’s a space where you can put delivery instructions 😊

Yerroblemom1923 · 12/02/2022 22:10

Set an alarm.

chiickenandchiips · 12/02/2022 22:11

Bloody hell yes it does matter Confused it's hardly 'trivial' if you have booked and paid for a convenient time and they regularly don't stick to it.

I have Asda come every week, on a weekday, in a 9-10 slot. I am back from the school run at 8:55 then go to work at 10:30. That time is the only suitable time.
When I'm on the school run they sometimes come early but I always leave a note explaining my slot starts at 9 and I'm only on the school run and I will be back for 9. They usually stack the crates up and wait. They are never late.

After school there are clubs, helping homework, cooking tea, bath and bed.

Weekends are often hectic and different plans every week.

That slot suits me so that's why I book and pay for.

So no, not everyone can change the slot to ensure a late or early drive isn't inconvenienced. They should just turn up during the slot Confused

gillybean2 · 12/02/2022 22:11

Phone customer services and ask them to put a note on your account that you won’t accept early deliveries. I had this happening constantly with Ocado who assumed it was ok to come early and didn’t always ring first to check. They were coming 2 or more hours early for late evening slots when I hadn’t even left work at that time...!
They even left the shopping on my doorstep more than once when no one was home who could take it in and it was before my booked slot because I got home earlier than the booked time.
The customer service manager was very helpful and the drivers always ring ahead to check and comment that it says not to come early on my account and is that correct…

chiickenandchiips · 12/02/2022 22:11

@shrunkenhead

Just get home early.
Why though?
Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 12/02/2022 22:12

YABU for the fact you pay £4.50 per slot. Get a delivery pass!

YANBU to be annoyed at them presuming you're home. I occasionally get a call asking if I am home as they're nearby, but it's always given as an option.

chiickenandchiips · 12/02/2022 22:12

@Myyearmytime

Just book a early slot before you go out
Why shouldn't that OP just be able to Book the most convenient slot?
shrunkenhead · 12/02/2022 22:14

Why not?

Darbs76 · 12/02/2022 22:14

Annoys me too. One driver arrived 50 mins early and when I said I was on the school run (hence I book 9-10am) and he said ‘but your TV is on’. I don’t mind 15 mins early but anymore than that it is inconvenient for me. Sometimes I’m still exercising

chiickenandchiips · 12/02/2022 22:15

@shrunkenhead

Why not?
Because the op is booking and paying for a time at suits them? So why should they have to plan for a driver not sticking to that?
Hankunamatata · 12/02/2022 22:16

Yeah Id be annoyed paying for a specific slot and they turn up early or late. I end to go for an evening saver slot, cheaper and Im in anyway

midds3 · 12/02/2022 22:18

Why should op pay £4.50 for the slot she wants and then have to wait in for an hour beforehand anyway.
I'd be complaining personally.

chiickenandchiips · 12/02/2022 22:21

Mumsnet really is crackers sometimes.

In the real world nobody would book a slot a whole hour before or after the actual convenient time for them just to suit a huffy driver that can't be arsed turning up at the booked time 😂😂😂

ExplodingCarrots · 12/02/2022 22:22

FFS it's NOT trivial . You book the slot to suit you. You're paying for a service and they should honour that time slot .

I had a nightmare with them turning up 30-50 minutes early . I complained numerous times to Tesco and all they said was 'you don't have to accept the delivery if they turn up early'. Problem is, the drivers didnt knock to check you're in , they would stack all the crates on the doorstep and then knock .

I once had a 'telling off' from a delivery driver when I arrived home from the school run . He was 40 minutes early . My shopping stacked up on the doorstep, including the frozen stuff.

It's much better now lockdowns are over. I always put on my delivery note that they must call if they're going to be early . Sometimes it's honoured , sometimes not. When it's not I make sure I tell the driver that they need to call beforehand because it's plain rude and it clearly says it on the delivery note.

OnTheBoardwalk · 12/02/2022 22:26

Yeah OP you need to book a slot that’s convenient for you then wait in all day, hours before it’s due incase they want to come early

Pre lockdown I had a driver ring me 4 hours early demanding to know why I wasn’t a home to take the delivery and that I wasted a green slot by not picking a time he was already in the area. I told him that yes I think green slots are great but not when I’m not home

His attitude totally stunk when he turned up again 4 hours later at my chosen time

Mellowyellow222 · 12/02/2022 22:27

I know it’s trivial and not the end of the world but annoying. And I’m I’m not in bed

Last week I booked the slot for 6pm - I work from home - was presenting to about 50
People and the delivery driver hammered the door repeatedly just before 5pm.

I had to apologise to the audience for the noise. And he was rude when I opened the door, and just shrugged when I explained he was over an hour early and I was live presenting so couldn’t leave my desk.

I know it’s petty - but why offer these slots if they are just a general guide - why not then give three hour windows!

I live alone - am rarely home when I’m not working.

But I know it’s not a big problem - just orrited me!
