To expect Tesco delivery to be on time

Mellowyellow222 · 12/02/2022 22:01

So I know this is a minor issue. But - I pay £4.50 for a one hour slot for my Tesco delivery.

About 50% of the time I get a call on my mobile about an hour earlier from a stroppy delivery driver telling me he is at my house and there is no one home. I remind them of the time of my delivery every single time and they still seem to think I am in the wrong.

I always try my best to be home half an hour before my slot, but my weekends are busy and I pay extra for the one hour slot for a reason.

Am I the only one this happens to - it’s the ride attitude that really gets me - as if I am in the wrong to not be home one hour before I ordered the delivery.

It’s usually the same man - there are generally two of them.

A younger guy is lovely.

But I give up. People are determined to make this my fault and I am sick of arguing. I am sure the majority of Tesco delivery drivers are lovely - I have had a few of them myself.

I just have experienced some rude ones.

But I am sure you are all right and I am somehow caused this.

Thanks to you everyone else for indulging my moan!

So same person that knows you're never there, try's to deliver early every time? So easy to sort!
Wnkingawalrus · 13/02/2022 16:19

LOLz at the people saying get home early. Yeah, just tell your boss you need to leave early for Tesco.

Wnkingawalrus · 13/02/2022 16:23

If you pay £4.50 to have shopping delivered, a date is about all you can reasonably expect. If you want it delivered at a specific hour, shops would probably needs to charge £10-15 if not more to be able to facilitate this. But that would put home delivery out of the price range of a lot of customers. It's the same with deliveroo, amazon and a lot of the "conveniences" that people have come to expect by right.

There’s a massive difference between ordering something from Amazon that can be left on the step if I’m out and a grocery order that you need to unpack from crates before you can take it inside.

Leftbutcameback · 13/02/2022 16:27

For extra value you can use your clubcard vouchers to pay for the delivery pass OP!

We had this before and my favourite one was I got home and the driver was early and had piled all the crates up against the front door. I'm not quite sure how he was expecting me to get into the house to take the delivery.

postpartumagony · 13/02/2022 16:27

We had three Tesco deljjvrries in two months not turn up at all. Now we use OCADO.

BlondeWidow · 13/02/2022 16:41

@marthasGinyard

Trivial

Get over it

That's harsh. Some people rely on their deliveries. Especially during the pandemic. As a (widowed) single parent I STILL get occasional grief whenever I have to take my child to the supermarket with me. Yes, I know there's no restrictions and yes, plenty of people take their kids there now but it does still happen.
ducktape · 13/02/2022 17:07

YANBU OP, I get a delivery every week to a 1hr time slot, if the driver would like to come early they call first to ask. This happens very rarely, like maybe twice a year. If they are running behind (also very rare) I get a text message with new eta

postpartumagony · 13/02/2022 17:10

If it keeps happening then call Tesco to complain, they take complaints very seriously.

DelphiniumBlue · 13/02/2022 17:25

If there was a supermarket that delivered at leat 90% of the order correctly within the allotted slot I would always use them.
As it is, I've gone to back to the faff of going to Aldi, even though it's 20 minutes drive away and takes up a good part of my Sunday morning, because I was fed up with Sainsbury's delivering only half my order several hours late, Tesco turning up when they felt like it and Asda delivering early or late but not within the 2 hour slot.
If I could actually speak to the depot to find out when to expect my order, that would also be helpful
Aldi is also substantially cheaper, but that's not even the deciding factor.
Final straw was when Sainsbury's delivered 5 hours late, lost half the delivery (all the fruit veg and fridge items)and so I still had to go shopping at a time hugely inconvenient to me to get supplies for the working week.
It's appalling service.
If anyone has a reliable supermarket delivery service, do please share!

Sainsburys deliver several hours late.... like booked at 10am and deliver at 7 pm??!

Wow!

ZippyZap · 13/02/2022 18:04

Annoys the hell out of me, especially when they arrive early and wake the baby up!!

Don't mind if they call first, but to arrive and start unloading before knocking really annoys me. Tempted to hide till the paid for slot ha ha

shrunkenhead · 13/02/2022 18:17

I'm guessing the drivers want to finish early etc if it's their last call of the day, I don't think they want to inconvenience anyone.
Amazon do groceries now that you can track on Prime. I think the answer is either early or late slots, especially as they're cheaper so it's win win Smile

ldontWanna · 13/02/2022 18:54

Morrisons ring 99% of the time and always ask if it's ok to come early.

I understand late with or without notice due to traffic, accidents, other issues.

But early should always be communicated to the customer, and if not convenient then they should come back at the pre arranged time. If that is impossible on a regular basis then they shouldn't offer it.

IloveJudgeJudy · 13/02/2022 19:17

Haven't rtft but the driver should call and ask if he can deliver early. It's ok to say No or just not answer the call. They will wait until the actual delivery time. Many customers like an earlier delivery but it's perfectly fine to refuse.

Whatnow321 · 13/02/2022 19:27

I’ve used Tesco for years.
Our Tesco delivery guys on a whole are really good. I have a particular lunchtime slot that they always were early for which was a bit annoying if I was in a meeting but after it kept happening I asked why and it was their last stop before returning to store. Now they’ll knock and wait if I don’t get down and then just appreciate if I do take it early. I wouldn’t be happy if they were grumpy about not taking it early.
It would be worth contacting customer services as they’ll feedback to store. I’ve found where I’ve had issues in the past and done this the store will follow it up with me.

babycornfortea · 13/02/2022 20:51

Can confirm Tesco don't give a shit. They are either super early or hours late. Or just don't bother and don't let you know. Claim they can't contact the drivers etc Hmm like they are magical off grid creatures, not in a van with sat nav, tracking and a phone!

If you ring and try to speak to someone it takes bloody ages and if you are very lucky they will give you a £5 voucher...

Really should move my custom elsewhere, but am a creature of habit. Too tired to build up my favourites/usuals list again Sad

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/02/2022 21:55

Update on our delivery today.
It was booked for 9pm. We got home at 8.10, about 1/2 hour earlier than I’d expected. I had a missed call about 5 minutes before which I’d not answered as I didn’t know the number. We had a card through the door saying Tesco had called and they knew they were early but could I give them a ring when we were ready for them to deliver. They were 5 minutes away doing another delivery and were with us just after 8.15.
Great service!

Aw see that's good. They know they are early
SaySomethingMan · 13/02/2022 22:08

@lkaist

Love how people are thinking you should change instead of Tesco actually delivering when they say they will - and a time slot you pay for 🤷‍♀️
This
Graphista · 13/02/2022 22:15

@Whatwouldscullydo I totally agree!

I lived overseas as a young child but don't remember it, and then again as an adult.

The customer service was SO much better, it was a real shock coming back to the pretty poor customer service we get in the uk.

The vast majority of it is unnecessary (it costs literally no time or effort to deal with customers politely - indeed it's an investment as it encourages repeat custom AND recommendations)

And some is downright rude!

If you do it you keep a level.of professionalism about yourself. You don't become an arsehole and do your job badly

Exactly!

Plus to be quite honest when I was in customer service roles I found when you were genuinely dealing with an arsehole customer the more considered and polite you were :

The more annoyed they got

This meant they had no way they could complain about you! Which also annoyed them!

What pisses me off at the moment is the non apology crap "I'm sorry you feel that way"

No! Either apologise properly or don't bother!

I am a person that will complain about poor customer service I don't see anything wrong in that BUT I will also go out of my way to report GOOD customer service and when I experience it I tell others and recommend that company.

I've done so on here and in real life on numerous occasions

@BABAHOTEL they're not all rude and grumpy - but in my experience the ones that try the early deliveries often are! They're also the ones that complain about the weight of the crates, and try to rush me and tend to deliver damaged goods! I think likely as they're rushing themselves sorting the crates out

So same person that knows you're never there, try's to deliver early every time? So easy to sort!

Well it should be - by Tesco!

@DelphiniumBlue was that debacle with Sainsburys during lockdown? They were absolutely horrific at that point! All over the place! I had insane subs at that point too which they wouldn't accept as returns at point of delivery.

I don't think they want to inconvenience anyone.

No but with a certain type of driver they simply don't care - and even behave as if the customer is inconveniencing THEM

@Muchtoomuchtodo how is that "great service" when they're chasing you to be able to deliver to you EARLY when you hadn't booked the delivery until 9pm earliest and it ended up being delivered 45 mins before the booking slot?

That's not "great service" at all, that's you giving them great service!

MissMaple82 · 13/02/2022 22:15

YANBU that is really bad. I'd go in and put a complaint in. Ask for the manager. It's not acceptable, you're paying g for a specific service

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/02/2022 22:20

@Graphista I thought that it was great that they asked me to ring when I was ready for the delivery.

That could have been during the slot that I’d booked, or earlier if it was convenient - which on this occasion it was.

mumda · 13/02/2022 22:21

Complain each time. If there's a delivery notes section you can fill in then do
But ringing and complaining to them is the way to resolve it..

I don't mind if they're early because there's usually at least two people in the house. I do quite like it if I'm on a zoom and it's all put away by the time the meeting finishes.
