To expect Tesco delivery to be on time

Mellowyellow222 · 12/02/2022 22:01

So I know this is a minor issue. But - I pay £4.50 for a one hour slot for my Tesco delivery.

About 50% of the time I get a call on my mobile about an hour earlier from a stroppy delivery driver telling me he is at my house and there is no one home. I remind them of the time of my delivery every single time and they still seem to think I am in the wrong.

I always try my best to be home half an hour before my slot, but my weekends are busy and I pay extra for the one hour slot for a reason.

Am I the only one this happens to - it’s the ride attitude that really gets me - as if I am in the wrong to not be home one hour before I ordered the delivery.

YANBU. All those people telling you it is trivial or to suck it up: must be great to have nothing to do but sit waiting for a delivery. Those of us getting ready for work / on zoom calls / on school runs / in the gym / at the doctor’s want the delivery in the hour slot that we booked and paid for because that was the time that was convenient for us, which is precisely why we booked it Hmm

Whatwouldscullydo · 13/02/2022 22:36

Plus to be quite honest when I was in customer service roles I found when you were genuinely dealing with an arsehole customer the more considered and polite you were

The more annoyed they got

Ha ha so true. They really seem to want to push you at times.

On one occasion when a customer got angry I politely asked him to leave. He quickly escalated to threatening to smash stuff up in the shop at which point I said tat right now he's being asked to leave. Calm down and come back later or tomorrow when they are prepared to behave. But if he smashed stuff up if have no choice but to call the police and bar him permanently.

Its bad enough at the best of times if u feed it by yelling and being a dick back you have no hope. If you aren't getting anywhere step back and let security deal with it.

You need to keep clean or you will land yourself in trouble

Whatwouldscullydo · 13/02/2022 22:47

The vast majority of it is unnecessary (it costs literally no time or effort to deal with customers politely - indeed it's an investment as it encourages repeat custom AND recommendations)

I've actually come to the conclusion that supermarkets don't actually want our custom any more.

Tesco have a 2 tier pricing system not just pennies in some cases. There was a 5 pound difference on razor blades ffs.

Aldi and lidl hurl your shopping at you.

Tesco and asda seem notorious for unreliable deliveries. I had a call one time from tesco cancelling our delivery at like an hours notice then promptly looked out the window to see them delivering across the road. That and their stupid substitutions were the final nail in the coffin.

Morrisons we have been fairly lucky with so far.

Sainsbury's however, appear to have an aversion to manning the check outs. They stand and watch peope try ajd put trollies thru the self service tills Hmm

Like wtf. You cant deliver properly there's no one on the till what are we supposed to do

FuzzyPuffling · 14/02/2022 08:40

Of for goodness sake, Graphista, of course I'm not saying everyone is lying. I'm saying that I am lucky enough to have had excellent service from Tesco and giving credit where it is due. I wouldn't want all Tesco delivery drivers to be tarred with the misery brush.

Graphista · 14/02/2022 12:12

@FuzzyPuffling

You said

I won't hear a word against them!

On a thread FULL of people relating the problems they've had with them!

That was tone deaf and yes that post very much implied that you thought posters were at best exaggerating

I think saying "all of them are rude etc" is a total exaggeration.

That's been said on here.

No, I don't believe that all Tesco/Asda/whichever supermarket are all rude.

I also don't believe that Sainsbury's often turn up several hours late. Possibly a one off, not often.

SartresSoul · 14/02/2022 12:28

We very rarely get online deliveries but whenever we do they’re always early. It doesn’t bother me because I’m in but I do wonder what would happen if I wasn’t. They’ve been 40 mins early before.

If and when it happens to me, if I'm not in they just wait.

YANBU. My elderly Mum had an early delivery (over an hour) which was booked around a hospital appointment. All the food was left on the doorstep - in the rain, loose. Ridiculous.

I can also imagine that for some elderly women, it would be a little scary for the door to go when you aren't expecting any one. I know my old elderly neighbour used to be quite nervous. She didn't like unplanned unannounced visitors at all. Which an hour early they would be just that

ifoundthebread · 14/02/2022 13:24

Yes all asda vans have location tracking. Drivers are also not allowed to deliver early, they try not to be late but sometimes can not be helped, eg staff shortages picking the shopping in the first place, driver shortage, traffic, bad weather.

If you're in a certain profession you get special offers at Morrisons. It was 10% discount but that's stopped. Don't know if any of the others are doing the same, but it got me thinking. If someone's getting a discount, who's paying for it. not really the company, but other customers.

Yes there is the constant insinuation that the regular customers are not good enough.

Yes I know businesses always want and need new customers. However it always seems to be at the expense of the rest

The reason many people don't sign up for loyalty cards/accounts is they get sick of the spamming. The only useful one usually being the initial " X pounds off your first order" after that it gets intrusive tbh. So it's agree to be harassed or pay extra.

The regulars seen to be the ones who are dropped first. They get complacent once you have done a few shops then u get the issues. Once you have built up a few pounts and its financially more beneficial to continue. A practice they seem aware of because there r offers that can't he used together so u have to do several shops to use them all up.

Graphista · 14/02/2022 18:43

I also don't believe that Sainsbury's often turn up several hours late. Possibly a one off, not often.

On 4 separate occasions delivering to me alone in a 3 month period, it was all over sm how bad they were at this point (start of lockdown) too

I think saying "all of them are rude etc" is a total exaggeration.

But so is claiming they're all so good you "won't hear a word against them"

It was also a case of poorly reading the "room"

Yes there is the constant insinuation that the regular customers are not good enough.

That happens across the retail and service industry in the uk

Martin Lewis and Mse have been with others campaigning to get such practices banned. Eg cheaper deals on insurance given to new customers

I never said that I wouldn't hear a word said against them though @Graphista! I said some might be rude, you know like a level headed person?
Imtryingveryhard · 14/02/2022 19:01

I’m inbetween as I grab whatever time is available (usually last minute) and if it arrives early and I’m
In, great. If not, come back. My delivery yesterday was an hour early but I didn’t mind. As long as they call back within the time slot I can’t complain. Tends to be early on a Sunday though. And I know most of the drivers so if I seem them
Parked up weekday walking home from school when I’m
In a 4pm delivery I’ll knock
On their window and ask them to deliver now if it helps. It usually does!

FuzzyPuffling · 14/02/2022 21:42

Ok Graphista, let me state my position more clearly.

I won't hear a word against the excellent Tesco delivery drivers who have consistently been extremely good in their deliveries to ME for the past several years.

Happy?

Geranium1984 · 14/02/2022 21:44

Mine are always up to an hr late. Painful when I've booked the 9-10pm slot 😒

BABAHOTEL · 14/02/2022 21:52

Oh and @Graphista the deliveries were not on time in the first lockdown!? When the world was turned on it's head? Fuck me imagine that!!

Whatwouldscullydo · 15/02/2022 11:16

Oh fgs supermarkets took all of 2 seconds to jump at the chance to increase custom by offering key worker slots and designated parking or whatever.

If they couldn't fulfil demand, by demand I mean merely taking the delivery slots they offerd. They put up etc their own call to add extra. Then they should have kept their mouths shut realky shouldn't they

treeflowercat · 15/02/2022 12:22

@Chloemol

Just get home an hour before
I'm assuming you're someone who's bitter that the OP can afford to pay for a delivery.
OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 15/02/2022 12:44

YANBU purely because your Tesco experience seems to be entirely different to mine. The majority of the time mine are always delivered in my slot. If not I get a polite phonecall requesting earlier delivery (with explanation I.e in area).

The attitude would p me off tbh.

Graphista · 15/02/2022 15:51

@BABAHOTEL hands up I apologise I'd confused you with another poster

These very late deliveries weren't at the very start of lockdown as Sainsburys weren't delivering at all at that point they were cancelling deliveries all together without letting customers know. At this point I was completely housebound and very much dependent on deliveries. When they did resume deliveries a few weeks in I gave them another chance as I'd been a customer with them for some years and previously they'd been fine, good in fact. What followed was insane subs, incomplete deliveries and yes ones that were 3/4/5 HOURS late which I think yes at the very least contact customers to let them know. They handled that time very poorly compared to Asda and Tesco ime. Closing down altogether and not even letting customers know what they were doing was ridiculous!

@FuzzyPuffling that makes more sense yes but wasn't the tone of your earlier post

Oh fgs supermarkets took all of 2 seconds to jump at the chance to increase custom by offering key worker slots and designated parking or whatever.

Absolutely!

Sainsburys were quick enough to arrange and create an ad campaign about how they were "there" for vulnerable customers - which they didn't actually properly put into practice for 2-3 months after the ad campaign

Mischance · 15/02/2022 16:03

I don't fret about it. I live in a rural area and would rather they come early than drive all over the place. The schedule is based on the times people have booked rather than on geography, and round here there can be 40+ miles between deliveries. It is hard for them to be exact about time. If they do arrive early they wait for me to appear.

I think they do a great job - it is a complex sliding block puzzle to get the deliveries out round here. And they are all very helpful.

Mischance · 15/02/2022 16:05

And I always smile at the TV ad "There's an Ocado just for you" - not round here there ain't!
