To expect Tesco delivery to be on time

So I know this is a minor issue. But - I pay £4.50 for a one hour slot for my Tesco delivery.

About 50% of the time I get a call on my mobile about an hour earlier from a stroppy delivery driver telling me he is at my house and there is no one home. I remind them of the time of my delivery every single time and they still seem to think I am in the wrong.

I always try my best to be home half an hour before my slot, but my weekends are busy and I pay extra for the one hour slot for a reason.

Am I the only one this happens to - it’s the ride attitude that really gets me - as if I am in the wrong to not be home one hour before I ordered the delivery.

I feel you with every single bone of my body! Although do get a delivery pass, it'll save you so much.

Mellowyellow222 · 12/02/2022 22:31

@shrunkenhead

Just get home early.
So then instead of clearing one hour I have to clear two to three? Just incase?

I actually just looked it up - and I will.

Life admin sometimes gets a bit much for me!

You’re not wrong, it happens to me and it’s so annoying. I often just don’t accept it but I have a ring doorbell so they know I can prove what time they were there. I wouldn’t accept crap attitude from the drivers either. I also want it to come at a particular time for a reason, like presenting at work or being home in time. It’s so annoying.

Accidentgirlfriend · 12/02/2022 22:36

I work for a high st retailer and our drivers get a mark against them if they are early aswell as late . So they have a manefest and it has timings on it and if they either leave the store or deliver earlier than what it says on the manefest they get pulled in the office if they have too many of these as these go to head office and it goes against the store . You should be asking what the policy is with Tesco coz it’s not on .

Hdhr8jsj · 12/02/2022 22:43

Why are you paying that much? Pay £7.99 a month and all your slots are included in that price.

I got a text today saying they were running late. But they actually turned up on time.

Isitsixoclockalready · 12/02/2022 22:45

Weird that so many comments were suggesting that the OP should change her arrangements when she'd paid extra for a particular time slot. Tesco are a business not a charity so why should the OP have to bend over backwards to accommodate them? I've got nothing whatsoever against Tesco - it's just an odd society that we live in where someone is given stick when they paid extra to receive a particular service and didn't get it.

I only recently started using the delivery - during Covid I am wasn’t high priority so braced the shops or did click and collect.

I have now signed up - much cheaper so this thread has saved me a fortune😊

Thank you all

Asda drivers have told me that they can attempt to deliver early but they must return during the slot if no answer, and they can't cancel and return an order to store unless it's within the scheduled slot and nobody is home.
Mellowyellow222 · 12/02/2022 22:49

@Myyearmytime

Just book a early slot before you go out
That doesn’t really work for me. I work and start early - there are no slots in my area before I start work.

I work long hours and try to get out of the house as much as I can at the weekends.

Thy can just get around that by lying though? That’s what my Tesco’s delivery driver did, said he came within the time even though he didn’t and cancelled my shop and took it all back, Tesco’s weren’t interested when I told them he didn’t come at the right time.

They have to log the delivery on their hand held device and account for any subs that have been returned, and I'm pretty sure they are tracked too. So surely it would be obvious when they went to an address.
RedCandyApple · 12/02/2022 22:57

Well sounds like they are better than Tesco’s then Tesco’s just told me the driver said he was here on time and they “weren’t going to argue with that” 😒

whatnumber · 12/02/2022 22:59

YANBU. All our drivers have been lovely though so surprised by your experience.
That's very expensive.
Get a delivery pass!

JazzyBBG · 12/02/2022 23:04

It's really annoying. Complain via the online@ email and it does get passed on. I have similar problem they always turn up early when I'm putting the kids to bed, I've started telling them to go away and come back and it has got better. One even rang this week to check! (Sure I'm on a blacklist) thee is no point in paying for a slot if they don't stick to it!

That's crap.

Asda are always spot on!

Kinko · 12/02/2022 23:17

Change supermarkets.

I think sometimes some supermarket deliveries are better in some areas than others.

Could be that Sainsbury's or Asda in your area is just better for deliveries.

But personally I wouldn't keep using a service where I was consistently let down while I was paying for it.

So YANBU unless you keep using Tesco and then I'd say - well what do you expect, all the evidence suggests that you're going to be let down, change supplier so to speak!

MaddyMagellan · 13/02/2022 00:02

It's very frustrating. Had a similar situation with an electrician recently. DH had phoned him to see if he was free and he said he'd be out the next day. DH gave him my phone number as I was the only one who would be there.

No time had been given, which was fine. He had my number. He would phone to check I was there, wouldn't he? I also had no plans as I had work to do at home and only needed to leave to do the school run in the morning and afternoon (about 20mins each time).

Came back from school run in the afternoon and immediately got a very grumpy phone call from electrician to say he'd been at my house 10 mins ago and there was nobody there so he'd gone on to another job.

Some blokes really do think women are sitting about at home with nothing important to do.

unvillage · 13/02/2022 01:50

I often get early deliveries - booked for the same time every week - complained to Tesco the one time I missed a delivery, was home at 3 minutes past the hour and they had been and gone - and was told that because there's a staff changeover at around the time of the delivery and I always accepted early deliveries in the past, my orders were actually marked as being available to accept early. They used to phone or text me when they were 30-60 minutes early but they don't bother any more, obviously assuming I'll be in every time! Get in touch and request no early deliveries.

Nat6999 · 13/02/2022 04:46

I'm always glad when my Ocado orders are early, usually we have everything away by the time it should be delivered, I had a phone call last time that my man was delivering round the corner & did I want my stuff early, no pressure, I could have said no. I imagine the delivery staff aren't well paid & maybe getting finished early is the only perk they get.

LadyPropane · 13/02/2022 04:52

YABU to expect decent service from supermarket deliveries. I've found all of them to be utterly useless for a wide variety of reasons, including the issue you've had here.

I don't bother anymore and just go and do the supermarket shop myself. It's a headache I could do without, given I have to drag my baby and two toddlers with me, but the delivery services are so shit that they are basically unusable for me.

Can't believe some of the stupid replies you've had here.

Mellowyellow222 · 13/02/2022 06:37

@LadyPropane I think some people just want to disagree, or sneer as posters, regardless of the topic!

You are exactly right with this. Some people come on here just for a bitch fight. It's quite sad really.

YANBU at all. It's terrible customer service on their part x

I think you describing them as stroppy is for added drama. Yes I've had those calls but never has the driver been stroppy. Maybe it's your attitude towards them that makes them that way?

I just say I'll be however long, as quick as I can.
